Ch-11 The Enemy Inside
Nobody moved. The photograph of the Harrington mansion remained on Ryan’s phone. It had been taken less than a minute ago. From inside the estate. You are still looking outside.Ryan read the message again. Then he raised his head.“Lock the house.”Richard was already reaching for his phone.“Daniel.”The security chief stepped forward.“Full lockdown. Nobody leaves. Staff, guests, security—everyone stays where they are until they’re cleared.”“Yes, sir.”Ethan frowned. “You think the sender is actually here?”Ryan looked at the photograph.“Either they’re here, or they want us to think they are.”Claire leaned closer.“Can you tell where this was taken from?”Ryan enlarged the image. The photograph showed the mansion’s west side.Part of the garden appeared at the bottom.A stone statue stood near the edge.Victoria came beside him.“That’s from the west wing.”“Which floor?” Ryan asked.“Probably second or third.”Sophia shook her head. “The second-floor windows don’t have that ang
Ch-12 Ethan Wasn’t Chosen by Accident
Nobody looked at Ryan anymore. Every eye in the room was fixed on Richard. Ryan slowly lowered his phone. The photograph remained on the screen. Elena Ward stood beside a young woman Ryan didn’t recognize. But Richard did. Catherine did too. And judging by Victoria’s expression, so did she. Ethan stared at his father. “Who is she?” Richard didn’t answer. Ethan’s jaw tightened. “Dad.” Catherine closed her eyes. Ryan looked between them. Well, this is going badly. Sophia shot him a look. Ryan immediately turned toward her. “Seriously?” “What?” “You just reacted.” Sophia froze. Ryan pointed at all five of them. “And stop doing that!” “This isn’t exactly controllable,” Victoria said. “My thoughts aren’t a family podcast.” Emma made the mistake of laughing. Ryan glared at her. “Not funny.” “A little funny.” “Emma.” “Sorry.” Ethan slammed his hand against the desk. “Can we stop talking about Ryan’s thoughts for five minutes?” Everyone fell silent. Ryan loo
Ch-13 The Dead Man Who Took Me
For the first time since Ryan entered the Harrington mansion, Richard looked afraid. Not worried. Not angry. Afraid. Ryan stared at him. “Your brother?” Richard’s eyes remained fixed on the old footage. The man’s face was only visible for a second, but apparently that was enough. “Yes.” “What was his name?” Richard didn’t answer immediately. “Dad.” “Alexander.” Ryan searched his fragmented memories of the novel. Alexander Harrington. Nothing. No dramatic villain. No secret uncle. No mention of Richard having a brother. Nothing. I don’t remember that name. His family heard him. Not once. Catherine looked disturbed. Ryan’s gaze sharpened. “Was he mentioned in the novel at all?” He had almost spoken that thought aloud. He stopped himself. Too late. Five people heard it. Claire and Ethan didn’t. Ryan looked at his family. A new problem suddenly occurred to him. They could hear his thoughts. Which meant eventually they were going to hear enough to realize
Ch-14 Which Sister Doesn’t Belong?
Nobody spoke for several seconds. Ryan stared at the photograph on his phone. Three little girls. Victoria. Sophia. Emma. One face circled in red. Sophia. Ryan’s eyes slowly moved from the screen to his second sister. Sophia had gone completely still. The usual amusement in her eyes was gone. “What does that mean?” Nobody answered. Sophia looked at Richard. “Dad?” Richard’s face was pale. “It’s a trick.” His answer came immediately. Too immediately. Ryan noticed. He doesn’t know that. Richard’s jaw tightened. Ryan closed his eyes. “Sorry.” Sophia looked between them. “What did he think?” Ryan opened his eyes. “I thought Dad doesn’t actually know whether it’s a trick.” Sophia swallowed. Richard stepped closer. “You are my daughter.” “That’s not what I asked.” Catherine reached for Sophia’s hand. Sophia pulled away. “Mom.” Catherine stopped. “Was I adopted?” “No.” The answer came without hesitation. Sophia searched her mother’s face. “Are you sure
Ch-15 The Seven Heirs
Ryan stared at the photograph until the faces began to blur. Seven children. Sophia. Ethan. Him. And four others he did not recognize. Behind them, written across the white wall: ONLY ONE HEIR WILL REMEMBER THE TRUTH. Ryan read the sentence again. Then again. It didn’t become less disturbing. “This is impossible.” Claire moved closer. “Which part?” Ryan looked at her. “All of it?” Fair answer. Sophia sat down heavily. “I don’t remember this.” Ethan remained standing beside her, his face pale. “Neither do I.” Ryan enlarged the photograph. He was five years old in it. That meant it had been taken around the time he disappeared. But Sophia was younger than him. Much younger. Something was wrong. His eyes narrowed. “Wait.” Everyone looked at him. “This photograph can’t be real.” Richard stepped closer. “Why?” Ryan pointed toward Sophia. “She and I weren’t this age at the same time.” Silence. Victoria immediately understood. “Ryan disappeared fifteen ye
Ch-16 Claire was never an heir
Claire stared at Ryan’s phone. One of them is Claire. Nobody spoke. For once, even Ryan had no sarcastic thought ready. Claire finally looked up. “No.” Ryan raised an eyebrow. “No?” “I am not part of some secret heir program.” “That would be reassuring if Ethan hadn’t said the same thing about being planted in this family.” Ethan gave him a flat look. “Thanks.” “Just establishing precedent.” Claire took the phone from Ryan and read the message again. Her expression hardened. “This proves nothing.” Ryan nodded. “Agreed.” She looked surprised. “You agree?” “An anonymous number has lied to us before.” He pointed toward the photograph of the seven children. “They created an impossible picture. Sophia and I weren’t those ages at the same time. So until we have evidence, you’re not one of anything.” Claire handed his phone back. “Good.” Still, she definitely knows something. Claire narrowed her eyes. “What?” Ryan blinked. Then remembered she couldn’t hear him.
Ch-17 subject four
Ryan had one immediate question. “How dead is Lucas Vale supposed to be?” Nobody answered. Obviously. Because nobody except Ryan knew Lucas Vale was supposed to be dead at all. Richard looked toward him. “You know him?” Ryan hesitated. Five members of the Harrington family were listening to his thoughts. That had become a serious problem. Don’t think about the novel. Catherine’s eyebrows pulled together. Ryan closed his eyes. Damn it. Especially don’t think the word novel. Victoria’s head tilted. Ryan pointed at all of them. “Can you please mentally leave the room?” Emma blinked. “How?” “I don’t know. Think about food.” Sophia almost smiled. Ethan looked irritated. “Why do you know Lucas?” Ryan turned toward him. “I’ve heard of him.” That wasn’t technically a lie. “Where?” “Complicated.” Ethan’s expression hardened. Claire folded her arms. “Everything about you is complicated.” Ryan ignored her. The security guard was still waiting. “Lucas Vale is at the
Ch-18 the real lucas vale
For several seconds, nobody moved. The photograph remained on Ryan’s phone. A man stood outside an airport terminal. Dark coat. One hand inside his pocket. A thin scar crossing his eyebrow. He didn’t look like the Lucas standing inside the Harrington mansion. But according to Christopher— That man was the real Lucas Vale. Matthew. The boy who had supposedly died fourteen years ago. Ryan slowly lowered the phone. “I need everyone in this family to stop being dead and then coming back.” Nobody laughed. Ryan sighed. “Tough room.” Christopher still hadn’t taken his eyes off the photograph. His face had lost all color. “That’s him.” Claire stepped closer. “You’re absolutely sure?” “Yes.” “You were children.” “I’d know him.” Christopher’s voice was different now. No confidence. No cold control. Just disbelief. Ryan studied him. “You called him Matthew.” “That was what everyone at St. Matthew’s called him.” “But his real name was Lucas Vale?” “Yes.” “Did he k
Ch-19 the sister everyone forgot
Ryan didn’t move. The forest seemed to disappear around him. Gunfire. Security. Christopher. Claire and Ethan running toward them. None of it mattered. Only the photograph in Ryan’s hand did. Two children. A little boy. A little girl. Both around five. Both smiling. And on the back— Ryan Harrington. Celia Harrington. Ryan slowly looked at Matthew. “You’re lying.” Matthew’s expression didn’t change. “I expected that.” “I don’t have a twin sister.” “You did.” “Did?” Matthew glanced toward the security officers approaching through the trees. “We shouldn’t have this conversation here.” Ryan grabbed his coat before he could move. “You’re not going anywhere.” Christopher stepped forward. “Ryan.” “Stay out of it.” Matthew looked down at Ryan’s hand. “You still do that.” Ryan’s grip tightened. “Do what?” “Grab people when you’re scared they’ll leave before answering you.” Ryan froze. That was too specific. Matthew smiled faintly. “You used to do it as a c
Ch-20 my sister came to kill me
Ryan stared at Selene Voss’s photograph. His twin sister. A woman who, until ten minutes ago, he hadn’t even known was related to him. And now— She has one instruction. Kill Ryan Harrington. Ryan slowly leaned back against the seat. “Well.” Nobody spoke. He looked around. “I feel like this family reunion could’ve gone better.” Claire glared at him. “This isn’t funny.” “I know.” “Then stop joking.” Ryan’s smile disappeared. “I’m trying.” That silenced her. Matthew was still staring at Selene’s photograph. Christopher leaned closer. “You’re sure she’s Celia?” “I can’t be completely sure.” Ryan immediately looked at him. “You sounded pretty sure five minutes ago.” “I said I believed Subject Seven was Celia.” “And V-07?” “Could be Voss.” “Could be?” “Yes.” Ryan rubbed his forehead. “So we’re basing my secret twin sister’s identity on a code, your memories from childhood, and messages from someone who lies whenever it benefits them.” Matthew nodded. “Basical
