Ch-13 The Dead Man Who Took Me
For the first time since Ryan entered the Harrington mansion, Richard looked afraid. Not worried. Not angry. Afraid. Ryan stared at him. “Your brother?” Richard’s eyes remained fixed on the old footage. The man’s face was only visible for a second, but apparently that was enough. “Yes.” “What was his name?” Richard didn’t answer immediately. “Dad.” “Alexander.” Ryan searched his fragmented memories of the novel. Alexander Harrington. Nothing. No dramatic villain. No secret uncle. No mention of Richard having a brother. Nothing. I don’t remember that name. His family heard him. Not once. Catherine looked disturbed. Ryan’s gaze sharpened. “Was he mentioned in the novel at all?” He had almost spoken that thought aloud. He stopped himself. Too late. Five people heard it. Claire and Ethan didn’t. Ryan looked at his family. A new problem suddenly occurred to him. They could hear his thoughts. Which meant eventually they were going to hear enough to realize
Ch-12 Ethan Wasn’t Chosen by Accident
Nobody looked at Ryan anymore. Every eye in the room was fixed on Richard. Ryan slowly lowered his phone. The photograph remained on the screen. Elena Ward stood beside a young woman Ryan didn’t recognize. But Richard did. Catherine did too. And judging by Victoria’s expression, so did she. Ethan stared at his father. “Who is she?” Richard didn’t answer. Ethan’s jaw tightened. “Dad.” Catherine closed her eyes. Ryan looked between them. Well, this is going badly. Sophia shot him a look. Ryan immediately turned toward her. “Seriously?” “What?” “You just reacted.” Sophia froze. Ryan pointed at all five of them. “And stop doing that!” “This isn’t exactly controllable,” Victoria said. “My thoughts aren’t a family podcast.” Emma made the mistake of laughing. Ryan glared at her. “Not funny.” “A little funny.” “Emma.” “Sorry.” Ethan slammed his hand against the desk. “Can we stop talking about Ryan’s thoughts for five minutes?” Everyone fell silent. Ryan loo
Ch-11 The Enemy Inside
Nobody moved. The photograph of the Harrington mansion remained on Ryan’s phone. It had been taken less than a minute ago. From inside the estate. You are still looking outside.Ryan read the message again. Then he raised his head.“Lock the house.”Richard was already reaching for his phone.“Daniel.”The security chief stepped forward.“Full lockdown. Nobody leaves. Staff, guests, security—everyone stays where they are until they’re cleared.”“Yes, sir.”Ethan frowned. “You think the sender is actually here?”Ryan looked at the photograph.“Either they’re here, or they want us to think they are.”Claire leaned closer.“Can you tell where this was taken from?”Ryan enlarged the image. The photograph showed the mansion’s west side.Part of the garden appeared at the bottom.A stone statue stood near the edge.Victoria came beside him.“That’s from the west wing.”“Which floor?” Ryan asked.“Probably second or third.”Sophia shook her head. “The second-floor windows don’t have that ang
Ch-10 novel is already wrong
The first gunshot shattered the window.Ryan hit the floor.Claire was already beside him.Daniel overturned a table and pulled it between them and the broken glass.“Stay down!”Another shot struck the wall.People screamed.Chairs scraped across the floor.Someone crawled toward the kitchen.Ryan kept his head low.Twice in one day.He looked toward the shattered window.I’m starting to take this personally.Several miles away, Sophia almost laughed. Then remembered her brother was being shot at.Her face immediately went pale again.Inside the coffee shop, Daniel spoke into his radio.“Shots fired! East side! Move!”Ryan looked at Claire. She was remarkably calm.Too calm.“You get shot at often?”“No.”“You don’t look surprised.”“I panic privately.”“Convenient.”Claire glared at him.Another bullet hit the overturned table.“Would you prefer screaming?”“No.”“Then shut up.”Ryan blinked.Definitely the female lead.Claire obviously didn’t hear him.She grabbed the folder from t
Ch-9 woman he was supposed to avoid
Ryan stared at the photograph. The woman was tied to a wooden chair. Her hair was streaked with gray now, but the face was unmistakable. The same woman from the old photograph. His nanny.Alive.At least when the picture had been taken.Ryan zoomed in.A concrete wall. One broken window.A metal shelf.Nothing else. The location attached to the message pointed to an abandoned industrial district forty minutes away.Come alone if you want to know why she took you.Ryan’s jaw tightened.Obviously a trap.Outside his room, Catherine stopped running. But if she’s really alive…Catherine turned toward Richard’s study.Ryan grabbed his jacket. He had no intention of going alone. He also had no intention of sitting in the mansion while someone who might know what happened fifteen years ago was being held hostage. He opened his bedroom door. Two security guards were waiting.Ryan stopped. That was fast.“Mr. Harrington wants you downstairs,” one said.Ryan stared at him.How the hell does Dad
Ch-8 what are you hiding from me?
Ryan read the message again.Ask yourself why the people around you suddenly know exactly when to believe you.He didn’t move.Neither did his family. That was the problem. If the message meant nothing, someone should have laughed.Asked what kind of nonsense the sender was talking about.Dismissed it.Instead, Catherine had gone pale.Richard looked like someone had placed a gun on his desk.Victoria, Sophia, and Emma were suddenly avoiding Ryan’s eyes.Ryan slowly lowered his phone.Interesting.Very interesting.“What does that mean?”Nobody answered immediately.Ryan looked at Richard.“Dad?”Richard’s expression changed slightly at the word.Ryan didn’t care this time.“What are they talking about?”“We don’t know.”Ryan stared at him.Lie.Richard heard it.His jaw tightened.Ryan noticed. And not a very good one.Sophia looked down.Ryan’s gaze snapped toward her.“You know something?”“No.”“That was fast.”“What?”“You answered before I finished looking at you.”Sophia’s lips
