The Price of Love
Aelia’s POV Kai stares Aviala dark in the eyes, voice quiet but sharp as he speaks. “I’m only going to ask you once again. Give me the antidote.” She tilts her head with little care. “What a way to ask. You are not in the position to demand, Kai. Not for her.” “I said, give me the antidote,” he repeats. I try to push myself up, but the pain pulls my body down. Jafser quickly catches me before I can fall freely. “Don’t move,” he whispers. “I’m fine,” I manage. “You’re not, Aelia. You are very far from fine. And I’m sorry for bringing you here. I truly believed she wanted to help.” “It’s okay, Jafser, I don’t blame you.” Aviala smirks at us. “Oh stop being so dramatic. She’ll live, provided Kai does what he’s supposed to.” She turns back to Kai. Kai tightens his jaw. “You really poisoned her?” She lifts her chin. “Yes. It was the only way to get her to stop whispering things into your ear.” “And the only way for me to choose you also, I guess.” He says. She shrugs. “Well, you’re
The Antidote
Kai’s POVI rush across the room, dropping to the ground beside Aelia. I see Jafser searching around the room for the antidote but all to no avail. “She said it is closer than we think. It must be somewhere around.”I look away from him and focus on her, lifting her face up to mine. “I’m so sorry, I should’ve listened to you. You warned me about her,” the words come out of me in a broken rhythm. She holds my hand, shaking her head slowly.” Don’t do that, Kai. Don’t blame yourself for anything. You’ve done nothing wrong.”“No, I should. I’m responsible for this. If I had listened when you first voiced out your suspicion, we would have been able to avoid all this. But I didn’t and now you are left to bear the consequences.” Her palm cups my cheek. Looking at her face makes me feel worse. She’s completely pale now, lips and eyes turning greyish-blue. “Again, I don’t blame you for anything. I also fell for hard tricks, we all did. She clearly planned this from the beginning, meaning it
Cursed Land
Kai’s POV“Kai, don’t go, please,” Aelia pleads as Jafser and I prepare to leave. I pressed my forehead against hers, looking into her eyes. “You have to trust me, Aelia. You know I’m doing this for you. Besides, you said we had to help the village before, didn’t you?”“That was then. That was before I heard about all the danger involved in it. That was before I could come in and fight beside you, protect you from anything that may attack. Now I can’t just sit here and watch you go alone.”“I won’t be alone. I have Jafser with me,” I say. “It’s not enough. The two of you— it’s just not enough,” she replies rather sharply that I have to wonder just how anxious she is to be able to gather such strength. I press her hand against my chest. “I assure you, Aelia, we are going to come back in one piece. Me and Jafser. We will return with the antidote, you will drink it and you will feel better.”“Kai,” she whispers. “It is the only option we have.” I stand and turn to Madam Javilla. “You pro
Trap
Kai’s POVHe gets up before I can get close, grabbing her by the throat and lifting her into the air. “Tomas, no. Don’t do this, it’s me. It’s me, Mina,” she begs. His face contorts into something unnatural. Just as I get close enough to strike, he dips his teeth into her neck, dark veins explode all over her. “Kai, step away,” Jafser warns. I step away as the stain reaches the wall of a nearby house and the entire building shakes in response. “What the hell,” Jafser whispers. “Tell me that’s normal.” I stare in awe. “It’s not.”“Good. Was worried I was going crazy.” The infection isn’t confined to the creatures alone. It’s spreading through the village itself, consuming walls, roads, everything. Even if we manage to kill every monster, the land might already be beyond saving. “We may have to permanently seal this place even after a final cleanse,” I say.Jafser looks at me sharply. “You’re right. But if we managed to see one woman alive, there could be others.”I look at him. “Let
The Rescue
Riri’s POVI unlock the gates, releasing the monsters. Eight is enough to scatter the survivors guarding and cause chaos. I knew these things would come in handy someday. “Go on,” I whisper. “Release your venom into the world.”The creatures start marching out in a robotic manner, their black-veined bodies twitching with each step. One still wears a wedding ring. Another has half a child’s toy tight in its palms like she’s keeping a promise to protect it for someone. I stopped wondering what these things used to be months ago. Wondering what caused all these lives to be destroyed because it doesn’t do anything other than mess with your mind .I bang the cage with my sword. “Go faster!” They shriek and charge down the street. I smile and I hear the screams follow almost immediately. “Predictable.” I admit it’s bad but it’s the only way to get them to back off. Understandably everyone has become an enemy to the villagers. However, I don’t see those guys as being anything like that and
D*****d
Kai’s POV“The monster called you the chained one. It reacted to you as if it knew you. As if it’s feared you, so once again, who are you?” She asks again.I look at the sword on my neck, then back at her. Jafser raises a hand. “I’d like to point out that we’re supposed to be on the same side. There’s no point killing each other when the monsters can do that for us.”She doesn’t react to his words. Her eyes continue to ball on me. I raise my hands in surrender. “Drop your weapon, I’m not your enemy.”“That’s what enemies say but that's besides the point because it’s not what I asked you.”“I don’t know why the monster said it. It was surprising for me too,” I lie. I want to kill her and for a very reasonable reason, considering she just put a sword to my neck and has the audacity to be threatening me because of what one silly monster said. Not to mention that she knocked me to my knees. I could snap her wrist, take her sword, and leave her bleeding out in the street as easily as nothi
His Costly Help
Kai’s POV I don’t for one second buy the story that she’s doing this to help us. I can sense she’s anxious about something so I know that she’s certainly looking for something. I just don’t know what yet.“Quit looking at me or one might think you are already falling for me,” she says, throwing me a look. Jafser laughs and replies before I can say something. “Liking you? Psshh. Hell no. He’s just not that kind of person. He already has eyes for Aelia.” I look at him as his face. She laughs. “Yeah, whatever. That’s why I told him to look away.” She throws her hands in the air, pausing her walk. “Well here we are.” I squint. “Where?”She looks at me. “The tunnel. The only other road we can follow and hope to escape the warden.” “Oh.”“And I must admit, I don’t really know this place well. Let’s just hope it gets us through.” I almost regret keeping her alive. Leading us to the chief’s house was the only reason I did and now she’s giving excuses of all sorts? We make our way into the
A Chance
Riri’s POV“You should know that the Warden isn’t an ordinary monster,” I step beside Kai, speaking my mind. He doesn’t stop to reply me. “So? What are you trying to say?”“I’m saying I know you want to help. I want to help also. I want a little boy to be with his grandmother but the warden is someone we must avoid at all cost.” He still doesn’t stop to listen to me. I grab his hand, forcing him to. “Kai, you have to listen to me.” My voice drops. I look at the boy who is in front with Jafser. Ever since Kai agreed to help rescue his grandmother, his mood suddenly lifted. I feel bad but, “The man is dangerous, Kai. We are already taking a big gamble by trying to follow his blind spot into the house. We cannot for any reason take him head on.” He stares at me. “I’ve already given the boy my word.”I know he’s doing all this because of his friend. He’s ready to give into any demands because wasting time takes her closer to death. However, Kai is not the only one who has something to l
Bitten
Kai’s POV“Hey, look at me, you have to fight it.” I yell, giving him an opportunity to take his teeth off because I don’t want to hurt the little boy. Jafser is ready to use his magic, but I stop him. “I have to do something, Kai. This is not the normal Tobin. He’s been bitten, he has turned. I have to do this.”“No. Don’t do it.” Tobin is still sinking his teeth into me, the strength is definitely nothing close to a human's. I wrap my fingers around his throat and finally manage to pull him off me, smashing him against the ground. A loud groan escapes me as I feel my body starting to shudder. Jafser crouches beside me. “Oh man, this is bad. This is really bad. He managed to bite you. Does that mean you’re going to turn?”Sera steps closer. She leans down and examines the wound, then stands silently. Jafser follows her. “What is it? Is he going to turn?” She nods once. “Unfortunately, the bite is deep. Venom has definitely gotten into his body. We must expect that he will turn so
The Secret
Riri’s “Sam, are you okay? Please be okay?” I fall beside my brother, running my hands over his body. “Oh my goodness, you’re burning up. Your fever is getting worse.”He takes my hands slowly, trying but barely managing to put his words together. “Sister, you came back for me.”“Of course I will come back for you. Why wouldn’t I? I told you I’ll always come back for you. When I leave, it’s because I’m trying to find a cure.”“But you still haven’t been able to find anything since. Don’t you think it’s time? Don’t you think it’s time to do what I asked?” My brother says with little strength. “No!” I yell louder than I anticipated. Then I take a deep breath and calm myself. I fall closer to my chest, shaking my head. “Don’t ever say that again, my brother. Don’t ever suggest that I take your life. We can find a cure, please don’t give up.”“A cure doesn’t exist, Revin. Not for this. And I’m tired of being a burden to you. I’m your older brother, I’m supposed to be the one protecting y
