The Whistle
Kai’s POV“There,” Tobin points forward. “That’s where the warden stays. The wall beyond it is the chief’s house.” I look and see nothing. “But it’s empty.”“Maybe he has gone out. He does it at times. This will be the best time to get what you want.”I crouch in front of him. “Thank you. Just stay here, I don’t want you going in with me.” He nods and quickly finds a place to hide himself while I prepare to go in. I don’t know how bad the bite will get but since I’m still conscious enough, I have to be quick with my objective. Jafser is already gone. He was right. Revin did save us and deserved a little reciprocation from us. I couldn’t do it so I told him to follow her and fight beside her if she was in any trouble. Since she was against me going into the house even though I don’t know why, this is also a seamless opportunity for me. I’ll get what I want before she’s able to return. I look around one more time to make sure I’m alone before making my way forward. “Kai.” A familiar
The Battle
Kai’s POVI swallow the freezing blast before it reaches me and a moment later, it surges through my arm, and I thrust my palm forward, blasting the warden's magic back to him.Revin, who had been trying to fight off Jafser to stop him from going into the house, stops abruptly. I catch the shock on her face which helps Jasfer beat her to the wall. The warden raises his arm to block my attack. It’s too late. The impact crashes him through a wall, filling the place with dust. “Now,” I mutter, “will you get out of my way?” A roar shakes through the empty space as he rises from the rubble, his armor cracked but his eyes burning brighter. “I see you carry a power. No wonder you can dare to stand against me. But trust me that is a power you do not understand.” He charges. I grin. “Then teach me.”He charges forward, I meet him halfway and the ground explodes beneath us. An ice spear forms above his hand and shoots toward my chest. I absorb it. The freezing energy coils in my chest. I twis
A Shattered Crystal.
Kai’s POVI rush into the house, eager to go search for the antidote. However, as soon as I reach the door, I hear sounds that I’m not surprised to be hearing. “Jafser, you can’t do this. You can’t destroy everyone because of one person. He may not be able to think well because he’s the one in the situation, but you are different. You are in the objective position, and as such, you must think of the good of the majority.”“No, Revin, it doesn’t work that way.”“What do you mean?” He sighs. “Aelia isn’t some stranger to me, you know. And she’s certainly on someone I want to die. She’s a nice person so I want her to come out of this.”She exhales tiredly. “Jafser, she’s a nice person. Well guess what, so are most of the people in this situation. Hell, being nice put them in this situation in the first place.”“I know that.”“So why can’t you do the right thing and help them? This is a chance for redemption for them. A chance for families to come back together. You cannot take that away
unconscious
Kai’s POVI dash out of the house like my life depends on it, Jafser follows behind me, eager to get the antidote to Aelia. Revin also rushes out eager to get to her brother as we now realize something—The element’s destruction was the saving point of the villagers. As I run down the street and see people who were infected before getting better, it dawns on me again. Protecting the element would have never protected the people. Destroying it was the only way they could get better. Sera made a huge miscalculation and if I had listened diligently like she wanted, the villagers would have never been saved. I also don’t know why I touched it. But I’m glad I did.“Do you think she’s still fine?” Jafser asks behind me as we run past the gate. I don’t answer. My heart is beating way too fast for me to form words. The guards at the gate look surprised to see us out alive and well. “Hey, where are you going? How did you escape that? Are there any more living persons alive? Can we finally bur
Let’s Return
Kai’s POV“Kai?” Someone calls my name. “Not now, jafser. I don’t need you to convince me to listen to them. I won’t be killing her for any reason because I believe she will get better.”He blinks. “What are you talking about? I didn’t say anything.” My brows knit. “What? Didn’t you just call my name?” He shakes his head. I’m about to argue when I hear the voice again. I pause. So does he. Slowly, we look down to where she is. To my surprise, her eyes are open, staring back at me. A gasp escapes me before I can hold it. “Aelia?”“Kai.” She calls faintly, reaching for my own. “Kai. When did you…?” She coughs. “When did you get back?”“I just got back. I’m sorry it took so long. So many things happened along the way that stalled the movement. I’m so sorry I wasted so much time.” She shakes her head, tears dropping from her eyes. “You have nothing to apologize for. You did your best and that’s all that matters.” She puts her hand on my chin. I pull her forehead closer, our lips barely a
The Return
Aelia’s POV“It is with a great heart that I am announcing the return of Kai Blackwell into the academy. You must welcome him back as one of your own, and help him to integrate back into the academy’s system,” Principal Harden’s loud voice sweeps across the auditorium. Not one person stands in applause. I’m about to do it when he holds me back, shaking his head. “Why? We should show them that we don’t really need anything from them. I can applaud you myself.” He smiles faintly.“And what would it show them? That we care? No. I don’t care. If they don’t want to applaud, they don’t have to. After all, that is not what matters. What matters is that we are back.”Jafser nods beside him. “I have to agree with him on this, Aelia. We don’t need anything from them.” I nod once and turn away. My name and Jafser’s were not mentioned because officially, we weren’t even out of school. I turn back to Kai to speak only to see his eyes focused on something. Orin. In the huge auditorium, they are st
Spread The Rumor
Orin’s POVI march back and forth under a tree, boiling as I think about the altercation that just went down. “How dare Aelia embarrass me in front of everyone? How dare she walk away with that monster boy when I was right there? She was supposed to get on her knees and apologize for even leaving with him, instead, she decided to do something worse. How dare she?” I punch my hand against a tree, ignoring the pain that follows.Mira follows behind me as I walk back-and-forth, trying to calm me down. My boys are also trying to do the same thing. “Orin, I’ve been telling you for a while now not to worry yourself about Aelia. I told you to forget about her, but you thought I was only trying to cause a problem between you two. However, I was right then and I’m still right now. Aelia is no longer the girl you used to know. Ever since that boy came into the school, it’s like she has lost her senses. She’s all about him— someone she should be keeping a distance with.”“Exactly,” I yell. “He’s
A Pressing News
Kai’s POVI’m walking down the hallway when I noticed a bunch of students whispering amongst themselves and pointing at me. I can tell they are talking about me, but what I don’t know is the content of the message. However, I choose not to care. Until my brother blocks my path.I pause, staring at him in confusion. He hasn’t seen me since I returned to school and I really didn’t care for his presence either. “Is there a reason you’re standing in my way?” I flick like a brow at him.He tightens his jaw as he prepares to speak. “What is this madness I’m hearing?”“It’s you who is hearing it. How should I know?” I try to walk past but he steps in front of me. “I’m talking to you, Kai and you just want to walk away?”I run my eyes over him once. Why does he think he has the right to speak to me in such a tone? Because he’s my older brother? When has that ever mattered for anything?“What do you want, Caelum? I’m late for class.” he laughs.“Class? You’re worried about class now?”“What? I
A Welcomed Visitor
Orin’s POVI stare at the girl in front of me in awe. She’s honestly one of the prettiest girls I’ve ever seen. Although, not as pretty as Aelia. She smiles gently at me. “You’ve been starring, Orin.”“Of course I have. I’m sure you know you are very pretty.”She smiles again. “Well, is that really why you’ve been staring? I thought you would be interested in the other thing I brought along?”“The matter about Kai?” She nods. “Of course I’m interested. But you’ve already given me enough. The news about this time in the months village is more than enough to ruin him. And I’m glad you gave it to me, Aviala.”She exhales. “Although I really did believe he was a normal person at first when I welcomed him into our home. He seemed like such a nice person so I kind of feel bad that I’m doing this. Do you think it’s right for me to feel bad even though he hurt those many people?”“What?” I scoff, shaking my head. “You shouldn’t be feeling bad for such a monster. And as for being nice to you,
Alone
Kai’s POVI look at Mr. Harden, expecting him to say something or at least give me a sign as to why my parents are here and I wasn’t informed earlier. But he doesn’t even pay me a glance once. My father steps in front of me, eyes dark and filled with rage and regret. “What have you done now?” he begins calmly. “What have you done that has caused us to be called in front of everyone and embarrassed like this?!” His voice goes up higher. I swallow, shifting once. “Is it a crime to have given birth to you? Did we do something wrong by keeping you alive all these years?” The room goes completely completely quiet. “ANSWER ME!” I look at him, repeating his words in my head again. Mr. Harden rises, clearing his throat. No doubt he is as uncomfortable as everyone else in the room. He looks at my father. “Mr. Blackwell, why don’t you have a seat so we can handle this our own way?”He turns to the principal. “Handle it your own way? If you could handle it your own way, why didn’t you call me?
