Chapter 1: Unrated
Forty-one pounds of goblin hide is not a lot, until you've carried it down three hundred steps and back up again with a man named Tarn Ostler breathing on your neck."Faster, porter. You're costing me daylight."There was no daylight. They were on the second floor of the Gullet, where the only light came from the lanterns on the party's belts and the green mold that grew in the cracks. Ren Calder didn't point that out. He shifted the pack higher on his shoulders and kept climbing.Six copper a run. That was the rate for an Unrated porter. A rated one got ten, but a rated one had a level, and a level meant a loan, and Ren already owed the Guild Bank three thousand four hundred silver he had never borrowed. His father had borrowed it. Level twelve, bought on credit, so he could haul ore for better pay. The Gullet had killed him in the first month. The Bank, being a reasonable institution, had transferred the balance to his family.Ren was nineteen. He'd been paying for six years. At six
Chapter 2: Grace Period
Ren did not run. His body wanted to, but his legs had only just started working again and he didn't trust them. The tall figure crossed the ruined room without making a sound. Its coat dragged through the dust and left no mark. When it reached him, it stopped an arm's length away and looked down with that smooth, blank face.Up close, Ren could see the book more clearly. The cover was cracked leather, and the edges of the pages glowed faintly silver. The figure turned it so Ren could read.[ ACCOUNT: CALDER, REN ] [ PRINCIPAL: 6 LEVELS ] [ INTEREST DUE: 1 YEAR ] [ GRACE PERIOD: 30 DAYS ]He read it twice. His mouth was dry."Thirty days to do what?"A new line wrote itself across the page, in handwriting that was oddly neat.[ REPAY OR BE COLLECTED. ]"And if I don't?"The figure did not answer. It closed the book, bowed its head, a small, almost polite gesture, and stepped backward into the shadow. The dark folded over it. The room was just a room again.Ren sat very still for a full
Chapter 3: Rustwing
Finding work as an Unrated adventurer was harder than finding it as a porter, because the Guild had a form for porters. There was no form for what Ren was now. He walked into the Guild hall with a level six that his own sheet refused to show, and the clerk at the desk squinted at his card and said, "This says you're not eligible.""I know.""So you can't take quests.""Then I'll join a party that can."The clerk gave him a long look, then pointed with her pen at a bulletin board in the corner. Most of the notices were old. One was freshly pinned, in cramped handwriting that leaned left.RUSTWING COMPANY. Low-rank. Desperate. Hiring anyone who can swing a stick. No fee, split the loot. Ask for Dara.Rustwing turned out to be four people sharing a table in the back of a tavern whose name had faded off the sign.Dara Quill, the leader, was twenty-six, sharp-faced, with ink stains on her fingers that never quite washed out. She was a level nine, bought on a loan she was still paying. Bram
Chapter 4: Interest
The Guild duel ring was a sand-floored circle in the basement of the Guild hall, surrounded by tiered stone seats that were already half full when Ren walked in on Friday. He had spent two days preparing. Not training, exactly. He'd gone back into the lizard tunnels alone and hunted everything he could find, repaying a few weeks of debt and borrowing, here and there, the pieces he thought he'd need.Strength from a cave bear. Reflexes from a night wolf. A scrap of stone skin from the Warden's core, which he'd kept. The total cost, according to the Ledger, was two years and three months. He'd stared at that number for a long time before he accepted.[ DEBT: 3.1 YEARS ]The gray had spread from his temple to a streak across the front of his hair. In the mirror, he looked like someone who'd had a very bad shock. He told himself it would fade.Kessin was already in the ring. He had traded the jeweled sword for a plain longsword with an enchanted edge, and he rolled his shoulders like a ma
Chapter 5: The Director's Offer
The Guild Bank rose from the center of Veyra like a pale stone tooth.Ren had walked past it every day of his life and never gone beyond the front hall. This time the guards led him through a side door, down a corridor lined with portraits of past directors, and up a spiral stair that seemed to go on forever. The office at the top had walls made of glass. Below the floor, Veyra spread out like a map. Beyond it, in the distance, the great dark mouth of the Gullet breathed steam into the morning sky.Director Halvane Voss sat behind a desk the size of a small boat.He was a slim man of about fifty, silver at the temples, with a gentle voice and tired eyes. He didn't look like a villain. He looked like a man who read books before bed."Mr. Calder," he said. "Please. Sit."Ren stayed standing. "What do you want?""Directly to business. I appreciate that." Voss folded his hands. "You are Unrated. The crystal found nothing in you. Yet three nights ago, you defeated a young man with a purcha
Chapter 6: The Hollow Vaults
They left the archive through a window. The footsteps hadn't been the Collector. It had been a night guard, and Dara had talked them out of reporting anything with a speed Ren found a little frightening. By dawn, they were back at the tavern, sitting at the back table with the whole crew crowded around."We go to the Hollow Vaults," said Ren. "All of us. Today.""Absolutely not," Dara said."I need moonvein root.""I know why. We all know about Mira." Dara's voice softened. "But nobody goes below floor five and comes back. That's what the Guild says.""The Guild says a lot of things." Ren looked around the table. "I'm not asking you to come. I'm asking if you will."Hesk nodded. She was always the first. Pip raised her hand, then looked at Dara, then lowered it, then raised it again. Bram, wheezing, said he would stay with Mira and keep her comfortable.Dara swore, softly and creatively, for about a minute."Fine," she said at last. "But when we die, I'm blaming you."The Hollow Vault
Chapter 7: What the Bank Built
The word hung in the air between them.Aldric Calder was alive. He wore the same coat, the same ragged beard, the same worn boots Ren remembered from childhood. But something was wrong with his eyes. They flickered, as if there were two people behind them and only one was allowed to speak at a time."Dad. Dad, it's me. It's Ren."The Collector's hand trembled. The heavy book clutched in the other hand began to glow, and the silver light spread up his arm like frost."Can't..." The voice rasped. "The debt. It makes me. Run, Ren, run now..."Then the light swallowed his face, and the smooth white plate re-formed over his skin, and the Collector straightened. The hand that had been trembling swung back, ready to strike.Someone clapped. The sound echoed through the cavern, slow and mocking. Ren turned his head.Director Voss stood at the cavern's entrance, flanked by a dozen armed Bank enforcers in gray armor. He was smiling."Marvelous," he said. "Aldric always did put up more resistanc
Chapter 8: Assume the Debt
Ren did not go alone. He sat on the floor of the flat for nearly an hour with the note in his hands, listening to Bram's slow breathing and the tick of the clock on the wall. He thought about walking into the Bank with the Ledger held out like an offering. He thought about it very seriously. Then Dara kicked open the door, with Pip and Hesk behind her, and ruined it."No," she said."I didn't say anything.""You didn't have to. You have the face." She dropped into a crouch in front of him. "We're not letting you walk in there and hand it over. Mira's my friend too.""She is?""She makes Pip do her math homework.""She does not," said Pip. "I do it for fun."Ren laughed, and it turned halfway into something else. Hesk put one big hand on his shoulder and left it there. It was Pip who saw the figure standing in the doorway. Kessin Aldous leaned against the frame with his arms folded, in a rumpled coat that had clearly been slept in. The silver thread was gone from the collar."I need to
Chapter 9: Vault Zero
The staircase went down for a long time.Aldric Calder walked first, with a sword from the armory in his hand and the stubborn set of the shoulders Ren remembered. He was weak, and he had said so, but he would not hear of being left behind. "I've walked these stairs for six years," he said. "I know every step."The stone walls had begun to glow with that same pale blue light, the veins of moonvein pulsing along the ceiling. The hum filled everything. Ren felt it in his ribs. The Ledger spoke softly.[ VAULT ZERO. ] [ ENTERING ORIGIN POINT. ]The stairs ended at an enormous cavern, so vast that the far wall was lost in haze. In the center rose a gigantic shape: a tangle of roots and light and slow, breathing darkness, held in place by thousands of silver chains. Every chain led upward to a ring of stone pillars, and every pillar bore a ledger sealed in glass. In front of it, on a throne of pale stone, sat Mira. She wore a white nightgown. Her eyes were closed. Thin lines of blue light
Chapter 10: No Interest
The chains broke first. They snapped one after another, with a sound like a thousand bells, and every ledger in the glass pillars burst into silver flame. The god let out a long, shuddering sigh, the sigh of something that had been holding its breath for a hundred years. Mira slumped forward into Ren's arms, light and warm, her eyes her own again."Ren?" she mumbled. "Why is your hair white?"He laughed until it hurt.Above them, the Bank was coming apart. Beneath Veyra, loans dissolved. Every contract, every lien, every stamped form in every vault in the city turned to ash and drifted away. The levels people had bought went with them, and nobody who had worked for their strength lost any of it. In every street, in every shop, a million quiet voices said the same surprised word.Gone.Director Voss fell to his knees at the foot of the throne. The blue veins faded from his throat. For a moment he looked ancient, and very small, and utterly lost."I kept them alive," he said. "I kept th
