The Guild duel ring was a sand-floored circle in the basement of the Guild hall, surrounded by tiered stone seats that were already half full when Ren walked in on Friday.
He had spent two days preparing. Not training, exactly. He'd gone back into the lizard tunnels alone and hunted everything he could find, repaying a few weeks of debt and borrowing, here and there, the pieces he thought he'd need. Strength from a cave bear. Reflexes from a night wolf. A scrap of stone skin from the Warden's core, which he'd kept. The total cost, according to the Ledger, was two years and three months. He'd stared at that number for a long time before he accepted. [ DEBT: 3.1 YEARS ] The gray had spread from his temple to a streak across the front of his hair. In the mirror, he looked like someone who'd had a very bad shock. He told himself it would fade. Kessin was already in the ring. He had traded the jeweled sword for a plain longsword with an enchanted edge, and he rolled his shoulders like a man who expected to win. "Rules," said the referee, a tired Guild official. "No killing. First to yield or be knocked unconscious. Begin." Kessin attacked first. He was fast, faster than Ren expected, with a bought level twenty-one and a lifetime of expensive lessons behind it. The first blow rang off Ren's forearm. The second sliced a line across his shoulder. The third drove him back across the sand. The crowd roared. "Is this what an Unrated can do?" Kessin called. "I'm disappointed!" Ren stopped retreating. He let the next strike land on his stone-skinned side and caught Kessin's wrist in his left hand. The bear's strength flooded his arm. He twisted, and the longsword went spinning across the ring. The crowd went quiet. Kessin stared at his empty hand. "That's impossible." "Yield," said Ren. "A level six cannot..." "Yield." Kessin snarled and threw a punch. Ren dropped under it and drove his shoulder into Kessin's chest. He felt the air leave the man's lungs. They went down together in the sand, and Ren pinned him with a forearm across his throat, and for one long, dangerous heartbeat he wanted to press. "Stop," the referee shouted. Ren let go. Kessin lay coughing. "You cheated," he rasped. "You used something." "I used what I had," Ren said. The crowd was shouting now, some cheering, some jeering. Dara and the others were on their feet at the edge of the ring. Pip was waving both arms. It should have felt like a victory. It didn't. Something cold had settled in Ren's chest, and when he looked up at the high gallery, he saw a figure in a dark coat standing perfectly still among the cheering strangers. It had no face. It lifted the book, and a silver line traced across a page. [ GRACE PERIOD SHORTENED. ] [ REASON: ACCELERATED BORROWING. ] [ DEBT: 3.1 YEARS. 6 DAYS REMAINING. ] Ren's stomach dropped. He'd thought he had weeks. He walked out of the arena on legs that did not feel like his, past the Rustwing crew, past Dara calling his name. He had to get outside, into air. He was halfway up the stairs when a hand caught his sleeve. It was a Bank officer, a thin man in a gray uniform with a silver pin. He smiled politely. "Mr. Calder? Director Voss would like a word." "I'm busy." "It was not a request." Ren looked at the man's pin, and at the two armed guards waiting at the top of the stairs. When he reached home that night, Mira was coughing so badly that she had to sit up to breathe. He held her until it passed. Her hand on his arm was thin as a bird's. "What's wrong with you?" she whispered. "You look old." He wanted to tell her. He wanted to tell her everything. But a voice in the corner of his mind kept counting, six days, six days, and he could not make the words come. "Nothing," he said. "I'm just tired." She closed her eyes. Her breath rattled. Ren sat by her bed until sunrise, and then he went to see the Director of the Guild Bank.Latest Chapter
Chapter 25: The Boon
The final was a formality. Selka Dray, the last of Mael's champions, had lost her power with the rest. She fought bravely and well, but she was only a woman with a sword now, and Ren beat her in ninety seconds without drawing blood. The crowd screamed his name.He stood in the center of the arena, sweating and half deaf, while the herald unrolled a scroll and announced, in a voice that cracked with astonishment, that the champion of the three hundred and twelfth Grand Tournament was Ren Calder of Veyra.A golden cup was placed in his hands. A laurel crown was set on his head. The Treasurer himself descended from the balcony, smiling like a man at a funeral."Champion," said Corvane Mael. His voice carried through the arena. "By ancient right, you may ask a boon. What do you wish?"Ren looked at the pit, now empty. At Hesk in the stands, free. At the huge, gray-blue banner of the Treasury hanging above the north wall."I want the Weighing Floors closed," he said. "All of them. Today."
Chapter 24: Torvald the Unbroken
The semifinal was not a fair fight.Torvald Brandt, called the Unbroken, was the Treasurer's greatest champion. He was nearly seven feet tall, built like a siege tower, and he had never lost a match in eleven years. His armor was black iron. His weapon was a double-headed axe the size of a door. Every thread of silver in the arena seemed to wind toward him, thick as ropes, glowing like a stormcloud.Ren watched him demolish a man in the quarterfinal in nine seconds."Four of those threads are Ilyra's," he told Dara in the tunnel. "The rest come from other holders I can't see. Other Lenders. Maybe in other cities.""How many does he have?""Too many."He lifted his eyes. Hesk was seated in the first row of the stands, no longer chained, sitting between Granna Oss and Pip. She gave him a thumbs up, solemnly, as if they were children at a school fair.He walked onto the sand.Torvald lowered his axe and studied him. His voice, when he spoke, was thin and polite and unexpectedly gentle."
Chapter 23: Hesk
The bracket drew Ren against Hesk in the round of sixteen. He read the name on the herald's scroll twice before he understood it. Then he looked up at the balcony, and the Treasurer raised his teacup, smiling, and Ren knew that someone had done this on purpose."Voss," he muttered."What?" said Dara. She had slipped into the fighters' passage with a forged pass. Her face was pale. "Ren, you can't. You can't. She's your friend.""I know.""If you beat her, they'll keep her in the pit. If you lose, they take the Ledger.""I know.""Then what are you going to do?""I don't know," he said.He walked onto the sand.Hesk was already waiting. They had given her a sword and a shield and a collar of pale iron. It sat around her neck like a dog's. In the sunlight, it gave off a thin, wavering shimmer. A thread ran from it, thicker than the others, up into the air toward the balcony."Ren," she said. Her voice was low and flat and entirely calm. "Don't hold back.""Hesk...""They're listening. I
Chapter 22: Silver Threads
By the third round, Ren had begun to see the threads. He noticed them first on Selka Dray, the Treasurer's champion in the second bracket. She was a slender woman with a pale braid and a long, thin blade that moved like a snake. Ren watched her fight a mercenary from the bleachers, and something nagged at him. Her movements were too fast. Too clean. Nobody trained that hard. Then the light caught her wrist, and he saw it.A single silver thread, thinner than hair, ran from her arm up into the air, curving high over the arena toward the north balcony. He went still."What?" said Dara, beside him. She had slipped down to the fighters' rail to share a bowl of noodles. "You look sick.""Look at Selka's hand. Does she have anything on it?"Dara squinted. "No.""Nothing silver?""Ren. No."He breathed out. Of course she couldn't see it. This was the Ledger's gift, or curse. The silver threads were only visible to holders. On the sand, Selka's blade licked out. Her opponent fell with a clean
Chapter 21: The Arena Gate
The Grand Arena of Calloway sat at the edge of the city, carved into the cliff like a great stone bowl. Its tiers rose sixty rows high and held forty thousand people. On the morning of the first fight, every seat was full.Ren waited in the dark passage beneath the stands, listening to the crowd above him. The noise came down through the stone like thunder in the next valley. He had been given a number, a leather vest two sizes too small, and a plain iron sword that smelled of oil. Around him stood sixty-three other entrants. Dockhands. Mercenaries. A few cold, silent men whose eyes passed over everyone as though counting. Not one of them looked at the others.Dara had managed one last word with him at the gate. "Don't die," she had said. "Don't be a hero. Don't do anything I wouldn't do.""What wouldn't you do?""I'll tell you after you win."The iron gate ahead of him swung open, and the light hit his face. The arena floor was white sand raked into perfect lines. A single raised bal
Chapter 20: A Cup of Tea with the Devil
Voss was waiting for him in a cafe on the harbor road.Ren had not expected that. He had imagined a throne room, or an arena, or a shadowed alley with guards in every doorway. Instead, he found a bright little shop with blue shutters, a chalkboard menu, and a single table by the window where a thin man in a gray coat sat drinking tea.Halvane Voss looked up and smiled."Mr. Calder. How good of you to come. Please, sit. The honey cake is quite remarkable."Ren did not sit. "Where is she?""Ms. Hesk is perfectly comfortable. She is in a private suite, eating well and refusing to speak to anyone." Voss sipped. "Remarkable woman. I rather like her.""You took her to get to me.""I did, and I regret the means." He set the cup down. He looked older than Ren remembered, thin and gray, his collar slightly too loose. A faint blue line still ran under the skin of his throat. "But I could think of no other way to bring you here without Lord Mael learning of it.""You work for Mael.""I advise hi
