Chapter 1
A City Men’s Correctional Facility Inside one of the cells in the Red Block, an inmate in a perfectly pressed prison uniform sat facing the wall clock across the hall. His eyes remained fixed on its hands. The moment the short hand struck four and the long hand pointed to twelve, a baton slammed violently against his cell door, startling the inmates who hadn’t been paying attention. But the man merely smiled and rose to his feet. An officer with a stoic expression appeared moments later and pulled the cell door open. “Inmate 9972, you’re free to go.” For the first time in seven years, Roman Moretti was a free man. Still smiling, he stepped out of the cell and headed straight to the front desk, where he collected the clothes he’d arrived in and his belongings, including an old button phone and a worn-out wallet. With everything in hand, he walked out through the prison gates. Roman slipped both hands into his pockets and tilted his face toward the sky, allowing the sunlight
Chapter 2
Roman’s eyelids twitched as he stared at the cheque. “Twenty-two thousand dollars. For what?” Even if Maren intended to compensate him for his seven years in prison, what exactly was she calculating? Eight dollars an hour? Even a high school graduate could earn that much without sacrificing seven years of his life. Maren’s expression darkened. “Did I stutter?” she hissed, throwing the cheque at his chest. “Take it or leave it. It’s your choice.” A dull ache spread through Roman’s chest. He didn’t understand. Why was she treating him like this? They had no problem before he left for prison. “Honey, what’s going on? Everyone’s waiting for your toast.” A man’s voice cut through the crowd at that moment. Roman turned toward it, watching as the newcomer approached Maren and casually wrapped an arm around her waist. She immediately smiled, tilting her head as the man planted a kiss on her neck. Roman recognized him instantly. Leland Pierce. Seven years ago, the Elwood family

The little girl’s frail body trembled. She slowly sat up, drawing her knees toward her chest, her big white eyes slowly filling with tears as she looked up at Maren, “I’m sorry, Mommy.” Maren sucked in a sharp breath, clenching and unclenching her fist as though struggling to restrain herself. “Don’t call me that,” she snapped. “I’m not your mother.” The girl shuddered. Yet she continued looking at Maren, her small eyes filled with a desperate hope that the woman might change her mind. Then her gaze shifted. Her eyes met Roman’s. The man stood completely still when he saw the resemblance. The little girl had his eyes. The same shade of grey orbs. The same unmistakable shape of his face. She was a smaller, more delicate version of him. This was his daughter. He, Roman Moretti, really had a daughter. All these years, he’d dreamed of holding her again. He’d imagined her running into his arms, calling him Daddy, and telling him everything he’d missed while he was away. He ha

A City was a wealthy place, home to thousands of rich families. However, four great families stood above the rest, each fighting to gain more power and hold on to what they had.Among them, the Hale family was the second most influential in A City. For years, they had been nothing more than an ordinary second-tier family. That changed fifteen years ago when Angelo Hale, the head of the family, suddenly stepped down and handed his position to his son.Such a move was not unusual. What shocked everyone was Angelo’s age. He was barely fifty, while his son had just turned twenty-two.In A City, heirs were usually trained to lead their families by the time they turned twenty-eight. Most took over at thirty-three or later, depending on when the family head chose to step down. But Aaron Hale had never been the chosen successor. In fact, he was third in line.To make matters worse, he was an illegitimate child. When news broke that he had become the new head of the Hale family, many people

His words had barely left his mouth when Roman reached across the table and flicked him on the forehead. “Watch what you say.” Baby looked up at the sudden movement. Jonas gritted his teeth, forced a smile at her, and turned back to Roman. “I apologize,” he muttered. He waited until Baby returned to her food before looking at the tablet in Roman’s hands. Thirty minutes ago, Roman had asked him to gather every piece of information he could find about the Elwood family and meet him at the nearest café. Jonas still didn’t understand why. Roman had lived with those people for seven years. Surely, he already knew enough about them. What could a file tell him that he hadn’t learned while living under the same roof? But Jonas kept his questions to himself. “How much is the Hale family worth now?” Roman suddenly asked. “A shit ton of-” Jonas stopped when Roman raised his eyes. He quickly corrected himself. “A considerable amount. They’ve gone from being an unknown family to the t

The next morning, Roman sat beside Baby’s bed, watching her sleep. Soon, the door opened, and he turned to see Jonas quietly stepping inside. Roman had suddenly asked him to come over before ten in the morning. “I need to get us some clothes. Keep an eye on Baby while I’m gone. I’ll be back soon.” Jonas’ heart skipped a beat. On his way out of the hotel yesterday, he had spotted several of Aaron’s men waiting outside. Some had even checked into rooms on the same floor as Roman to keep a closer eye on him. If they saw Roman leaving his room now… “I drove here. She can sleep in the back seat while I drive you.” Roman picked up his jacket from the edge of the bed and put it on without looking at him. Turning toward Jonas, he smiled faintly. “Clearly, I don’t want that.” With that, he strode past him. Jonas’s hands trembled, and his face twitched with guilt. Today was the day Roman would die. After Roman withdrew from the underworld, Jonas had barely enjoyed h

The gang leader nearly jumped out of his seat, stunned to see his second-in-command reduced to such a state. The younger man lay in a pool of his own blood, gurgling as he struggled to breathe.“I’ll give one million dollars to whoever brings me the head of this delusional bastard!”Earlier, they had been promised $20,000 for the fight. Now that the reward had suddenly increased to a million dollars, the men were eager to cash in.They followed Roman’s example, breaking their sticks and batons against the wall before charging at him. Each man wanted to be the one to take him down.Watching them approach, Roman realized they weren’t even worth using both hands on. He pressed a hand to the corner of his eye and sighed. When the first man reached him, Roman swept him off his feet, snatched the stick from his hand, and stabbed him in the arm.He did the same to every man who came at him, changing the spot he targeted each time. Some were stabbed in the arms, others in the legs, until all
Chapter 8
The Hale family had once again outdone themselves. They were now only a few billion away from overtaking the Donald family of A City and becoming the wealthiest family in the country. As a result, countless people had flocked to curry favor with them. Even those who had once backed the Donalds were now here, weighing whether switching sides would benefit them in the long run. The Hale family’s massive estate was packed to the brim, but that was exactly what Aaron had intended. Standing on the roof overlooking the crowd below, Aaron turned at the sound of approaching footsteps and clicked his tongue. “Sir, I can’t reach them. I can’t reach anyone we sent out.” The corners of Aaron’s lips curled into a faint smile. According to the rules of the underworld, anyone who wanted to claim the title of Hand of Death had to face its current holder in close combat. Roman, however, was not just anyone. He was formidable in combat, the best even the elders had seen in years. Without an a

Aaron’s jaw ticked. So he knew. Fifteen years ago, Aaron had been certain he would die before turning eighteen and receiving the small inheritance his grandfather had left him. It was barely enough to live comfortably for a year, while his half-siblings and cousins inherited company shares and buildings across the country. Even that little inheritance had been too much for his father to stomach. Angelo Hale had beaten and strangled him at every opportunity, as though he couldn’t stand the thought of his son receiving anything he hadn’t been given. Aaron had almost given up hope of seeing his twenty-second birthday when an arrogant young man strolled into their vineyard one day and casually remarked on how good the fruit tasted. His father, a man who had always carried himself as though the world belonged to him, had been scared out of his wits by someone half his age. Aaron later learned why. His father had a gambling addiction and had lost his fifteen percent stake in Hale G
Chapter 10
“What did you say?” Aaron tightened his grip on his phone and snapped his head toward the duo again. Roman stood rooted to the spot, just as he had a minute ago, the same wicked grin dancing across his lips. Aaron turned to storm toward them but stopped when everyone’s phone lit up with notifications. Those who didn’t check their phones immediately were shown what was happening online by someone nearby. The moment they saw the news, their eyes snapped toward Aaron before they hurriedly looked away and subtly took a few steps back. The usually composed man snatched the phone from the person standing closest to him. The headline was firm and straight to the point. Aaron Hale, Chairman of Hale Group, Impeached! Then came the online warriors’ accusations. Row after row of comments accused him of embezzling company funds. Sure, he had done it. But what was wrong with taking a few hundred million to buy a lake and a private jet? Hadn’t he worked hard enough to deserve such gifts?
