Chapter 2

Roman’s eyelids twitched as he stared at the cheque.

“Twenty-two thousand dollars. For what?”

Even if Maren intended to compensate him for his seven years in prison, what exactly was she calculating?

Eight dollars an hour? Even a high school graduate could earn that much without sacrificing seven years of his life.

Maren’s expression darkened.

“Did I stutter?” she hissed, throwing the cheque at his chest. “Take it or leave it. It’s your choice.”

A dull ache spread through Roman’s chest.

He didn’t understand.

Why was she treating him like this? They had no problem before he left for prison.

“Honey, what’s going on? Everyone’s waiting for your toast.” A man’s voice cut through the crowd at that moment.

Roman turned toward it, watching as the newcomer approached Maren and casually wrapped an arm around her waist.

She immediately smiled, tilting her head as the man planted a kiss on her neck.

Roman recognized him instantly.

Leland Pierce.

Seven years ago, the Elwood family had complained bitterly about how Leland had suddenly gone abroad, leaving Maren devastated on the altar.

Now, here he was, standing beside her as though he’d never left.

And the way she leaned into him left little room for doubt.

Was this her new husband? Was he Nico’s father?

Maren’s smile vanished the moment she noticed Roman watching them.

“This bastard refuses to leave,” she complained. “I’ve already offered him money for the time he spent in prison, but he insists on making a scene. I don’t know what else he wants.”

Leland glanced at Roman.

Recognition dawned on his face, followed by a faint, dismissive smile. “Oh. It’s you.”

He then turned to Maren. “How much did you offer him?”

Maren felt the back of her neck numbly before answering, “Twenty-two thousand.”

Leland chuckled. “Forget it, honey. I’ll give him a hundred thousand. That should be more than enough to get him off our backs.”

He beckoned to a nearby servant for a cheque book.

After writing the amount, he tossed the cheque toward Roman.

It fell short, landing on the floor between them.

He didn’t even bother to check whether Roman had picked it up.

Instead, he took Maren’s hand and started walking away.

He seemed to remember something and paused, tilting his head to look at Maren.

“Oh, that reminds me. Don’t you still have something that belongs to him?”

“Right. How could I forget?” Maren blinked before understanding what he meant. She turned toward one of the servers. “Bring Baby.”

Behind her, Roman’s hands slowly curled into fists.

Seven years.

He had spent seven years taking the blame for a crime Maren had committed, believing that his sacrifice would protect the woman he loved and their unborn child.

Yet, while he rotted in prison, she had married another man and built an entirely new family.

Had she even been pregnant when he’d gone to prison? She had shown him some ultrasound pictures and he believed her without a doubt.

What if she had lied to him knowing he’d do as she wanted to protect them?

“Are you even allowed to do this?” Roman demanded. “Marry another man while you’re still married to me?”

Maren laughed without turning to look at him. “Of course I’m allowed to. I’m no longer married to you.”

Roman stared at her. “What?”

“What do you take me for?” she asked mockingly. “Before you went to prison, I asked you to sign a few documents, remember? I slipped the divorce papers in with the rest.”

For a moment, Roman couldn’t speak.

She had divorced him even before he left. And he’d signed the papers without knowing.

“You presumptuous fool. I’m Maren Elwood. Why would I marry a nameless nobody like you? You caught me at a vulnerable moment and took advantage of me.” Maren folded her arms. Her lips curled. “But look at the good that came out of it. You were an insignificant wimp back then, and prison gave you something to look forward to for seven years.”

Leland gestured dismissively at the cheque on the floor. “If you weren’t so ungrateful, you’d be thanking her!”

Roman lowered his head and let out a short, disbelieving breath.

What kind of twisted logic was this?

He was the one who gave up seven years of his life for her, yet she was acting as though she’d done him a favor.

He slowly raised his head. “Answer me one question, Maren. Were you ever pregnant?”

Before she could respond, a frightened voice rang through the hall.

“I-I don’t want to… M-Mommy!”

Everyone turned.

Two men were dragging a little girl of about six toward Maren. She struggled desperately, grabbing at anyone within reach as though begging someone to save her.

The men pried her fingers away and continued pulling her forward.

The moment the girl spotted Maren, she twisted free and ran toward her.

“Mommy!”

She had barely reached her when Maren raised her hand.

SLAP!

The little girl fell to the floor after being slapped hard across the face.

A hush fell over the gathering.

Maren immediately accepted a pack of wipes from a nearby server and began scrubbing her palm, her face twisting in disgust.

“What did you say?” Aaron tightened his grip on his phone and snapped his head toward the duo again. Roman stood rooted to the spot, just as he had a minute ago, the same wicked grin dancing across his lips. Aaron turned to storm toward them but stopped when everyone’s phone lit up with notifications. Those who didn’t check their phones immediately were shown what was happening online by someone nearby. The moment they saw the news, their eyes snapped toward Aaron before they hurriedly looked away and subtly took a few steps back. The usually composed man snatched the phone from the person standing closest to him. The headline was firm and straight to the point. Aaron Hale, Chairman of Hale Group, Impeached! Then came the online warriors’ accusations. Row after row of comments accused him of embezzling company funds. Sure, he had done it. But what was wrong with taking a few hundred million to buy a lake and a private jet? Hadn’t he worked hard enough to deserve such gifts?

Aaron’s jaw ticked. So he knew. Fifteen years ago, Aaron had been certain he would die before turning eighteen and receiving the small inheritance his grandfather had left him. It was barely enough to live comfortably for a year, while his half-siblings and cousins inherited company shares and buildings across the country. Even that little inheritance had been too much for his father to stomach. Angelo Hale had beaten and strangled him at every opportunity, as though he couldn’t stand the thought of his son receiving anything he hadn’t been given. Aaron had almost given up hope of seeing his twenty-second birthday when an arrogant young man strolled into their vineyard one day and casually remarked on how good the fruit tasted. His father, a man who had always carried himself as though the world belonged to him, had been scared out of his wits by someone half his age. Aaron later learned why. His father had a gambling addiction and had lost his fifteen percent stake in Hale G

The Hale family had once again outdone themselves. They were now only a few billion away from overtaking the Donald family of A City and becoming the wealthiest family in the country. As a result, countless people had flocked to curry favor with them. Even those who had once backed the Donalds were now here, weighing whether switching sides would benefit them in the long run. The Hale family’s massive estate was packed to the brim, but that was exactly what Aaron had intended. Standing on the roof overlooking the crowd below, Aaron turned at the sound of approaching footsteps and clicked his tongue. “Sir, I can’t reach them. I can’t reach anyone we sent out.” The corners of Aaron’s lips curled into a faint smile. According to the rules of the underworld, anyone who wanted to claim the title of Hand of Death had to face its current holder in close combat. Roman, however, was not just anyone. He was formidable in combat, the best even the elders had seen in years. Without an a

Now that the reward had suddenly increased to a million dollars, the men were eager to cash in.They followed Roman’s example, breaking their sticks and batons against the wall before charging at him. Each man wanted to be the one to take him down.Watching them approach, Roman realized they weren’t even worth using both hands on. He pressed a hand to the corner of his eye and sighed. When the first man reached him, Roman swept him off his feet, snatched the stick from his hand, and stabbed him in the arm.He did the same to every man who came at him, changing the spot he targeted each time. Some were stabbed in the arms, others in the legs, until all

The next morning, Roman sat beside Baby’s bed, watching her sleep. Soon, the door opened, and he turned to see Jonas quietly stepping inside. Roman had suddenly asked him to come over before ten in the morning. “I need to get us some clothes. Keep an eye on Baby while I’m gone. I’ll be back soon.” Jonas’ heart skipped a beat. On his way out of the hotel yesterday, he had spotted several of Aaron’s men waiting outside. Some had even checked into rooms on the same floor as Roman to keep a closer eye on him. If they saw Roman leaving his room now… “I drove here. She can sleep in the back seat while I drive you.” Roman picked up his jacket from the edge of the bed and put it on without looking at him. Turning toward Jonas, he smiled faintly. “Clearly, I don’t want that.” With that, he strode past him. Jonas’s hands trembled, and his face twitched with guilt. Today was the day Roman would die. After Roman withdrew from the underworld, Jonas had barely enjoyed h

His words had barely left his mouth when Roman reached across the table and flicked him on the forehead. “Watch what you say.” Baby looked up at the sudden movement. Jonas gritted his teeth, forced a smile at her, and turned back to Roman. “I apologize,” he muttered. He waited until Baby returned to her food before looking at the tablet in Roman’s hands. Thirty minutes ago, Roman had asked him to gather every piece of information he could find about the Elwood family and meet him at the nearest café. Jonas still didn’t understand why. Roman had lived with those people for seven years. Surely, he already knew enough about them. What could a file tell him that he hadn’t learned while living under the same roof? But Jonas kept his questions to himself. “How much is the Hale family worth now?” Roman suddenly asked. “A shit ton of-” Jonas stopped when Roman raised his eyes. He quickly corrected himself. “A considerable amount. They’ve gone from being an unknown family to the t
