"Wow, that’s brilliant, Harry! Just an ordinary accounts clerk, and suddenly you’ve inherited a house this big."Harry’s footsteps came to a halt at the threshold of an old, carved wooden door with an arched top. The air was cold and musty, and dust was everywhere as they entered.Next to him was Jack, his colleague from the office. He had kindly given him a lift in his car. Jack gazed at the interior of the building with a look of amazement on his face.“I don’t think you can really call this a house,” replied Harry, with a look of disgust.“Harry, this isn’t just any old house! Look… there are loads of antiques in here.” “Of course there are! My grandmother’s an antique dealer,” replied Harry flatly. He waved his hand, trying to brush away the fine dust floating in the air as he stepped inside.Harry let out a long sigh. He took off his black-framed glasses, wiped the lenses with the hem of his still-neat office shirt, then put them back on.“My grandmother’s just a collector of ol

"Don’t open it! If you open that door now, your head will roll off before you’ve even had a chance to get out of the way!" The voice of the Spirit of the Padlock boomed right next to Harry’s head. Harry froze on the spot. His hands, trembling violently, came to a halt just a few centimetres from the wooden hinge in front of him. Outside, Jack’s voice was still wailing, calling his name in a tone of terror that grew ever more heart-rending.“Harry! O-pen…, Harry !”The voice sounded all too real. There was a tremor in it that Harry recognized all too well. Harry’s throat tightened; his breath caught in his chest.“But… but that’s Jack’s voice!” whispered Harry, almost shouting. His eyes widened as he stared at the crack in the rotten wooden door. “He’s outside! He needs my help!”“Your cowardly friend has been unconscious in his car for the past five minutes,” replied the spirit of the padlock in an extraordinarily calm tone. The invisible creature, taking the form of a tall figure i

TANG!The wooden mask turned black and billowed thick smoke. It came loose from the dagger Harry had thrust into it. The object tumbled onto the wooden floor, spinning several times before finally coming to rest, lifeless, right at the tip of Harry’s shoe.Harry fell to his knees. The silver dagger slipped from his grasp and clattered to the floor beside him. Harry’s breathing was rapid, short, and irregular. Cold sweat soaked his office shirt from front to back. Blood trickled from his arm, cut by glass, onto the floor."I’ve done it… I've done it… Yes! I’ve managed it…," Harry murmured.Every joint in his legs was shaking violently. He had no strength left, not even enough to support his own weight. This was his first face-to-face encounter with a supernatural monster, which he’d always dismissed as nothing more than an old wives’ tale. And what seemed most unbelievable to him right now… was that he’d managed to survive. He’d managed to win this mad battle.Harry’s head felt heavy.

CLICK The sound of the lock’s hinge clicking into place was so satisfying. Harry let out a long sigh, rubbing his chest as he began to relax. For the first time since he’d arrived at this shop earlier that evening, he felt he could breathe a sigh of relief.BZZZZZT! BZZZZZT! BZZZZZT!The vibration from the mobile phone in Harry's trouser pocket broke his concentration. The phone’s default ringtone sounded incredibly loud.Harry fumbled in his trouser pocket somewhat hurriedly. He pulled out his smartphone. The name displayed on the screen made him frown instantly.Mr. Thomas—Finance ManagerHarry let out a soft sigh. He rubbed his temples, which had suddenly started to throb.“Especially now…” he muttered before pressing the green button and holding the mobile to his ear. “Yes, Mr. Thomas? Sorry, sir, I’m already out of the office…”"Harry! WHERE ARE YOU?!”Mr Thomas’s shout blared out of the phone’s speaker at such a loud, shrill volume that Harry instinctively pulled the phone a

"Hah! All right then! I’m going to check my report first. Jack, just wait in the lobby downstairs and have a quick coffee," said Harry as he hurried towards the building’s main glass door.“Oh, and one more thing! Don’t you dare go up to the fourth floor, whatever happens!”“Hey, Harry! Where are you off to?! Don’t you want to tell me what’s going on first?!” shouted Jack from behind, but Harry had already sprinted straight into the lobby.Inside the spacious main lobby of the building, the atmosphere felt very out of the ordinary. A security guard on duty appeared to be fast asleep, slumped over the reception desk. Harry tried calling out to him and shaking his shoulder, but the guard did not stir in the slightest; he was fast asleep.Harry decided to ignore the row of tightly closed lift doors and headed for the fire escape. He ran up the stairs, one step at a time, towards the fourth floor. The higher he climbed, the colder, thicker, and heavier the air in the stairwell felt. With

“Find the object in which the spirit resides!” commanded the Spirit of the Padlock. “A being of this caliber requires a physical vessel in the real world. A stamp? A pen? Or the printing press in this room?”Harry swept his gaze around the chaotic room. He focused his inner eye to see deeper. Lines of a blackish-purple aura could be seen spreading from every corner of the fourth floor, seeping out from the cracks in the tiles and converging at a single point in the center of the room. The stamp was carved in the shape of a small dragon’s head with a fragile black wooden handle, giving off a pungent smell of rotting ink.“That’s it!” cried Harry. However, realizing his secret had been uncovered, Mr. Thomas—who was still in a trance—roared loudly. His voice shook the window panes on the fourth floor until they rattled. The red ink gushing from his body now formed a gigantic wave. Sheets of paper scattered through the air were sucked into the wave of ink, transforming into sharp strips o

From the pool of foul-smelling ink on the floor, a clump of thick red ink with a pungent, coppery odor rose into the air. The clump swelled, taking the shape of a faceless, towering giant. “You’ve only got three minutes before your boss becomes that spirit’s eternal dwelling place.”“Three minutes?! Are you joking?!” Harry shouted, gritting his teeth as he endured the pain radiating from his back, which had just slammed into the filing cabinet due to a surge of supernatural energy.“Who’s joking, lad?” The Spirit of the Padlock hovered above Harry's shoulder, its voice cold and devoid of humor. “Look at your boss’s chest! His aura has already dimmed! If those threads absorb all his life force within three minutes, that ink-like figure will take on a permanent physical form and kill him!”Jack, standing next to Harry, got goosebumps watching Harry talking to himself. Jack knew that his best friend must be communicating with an invisible creature. Jack braced himself as Harry also be

The padlock around Harry's neck emitted an intensely bright blue light. The red smoke, shaped like an old man’s face, was forcibly sucked back into the black wooden barrel of the pen.The pen trembled violently for a few seconds before its red light finally faded completely, transforming into an elegant, pure golden hue.A mystical echo sounded softly within Harry's mind.[Purification Successful: Oath-Breaking Pen][Contract Formed: Spirit of the Writer of Destiny Successfully Subdued][Soul Capacity Increased by Level 1: Collect 2 out of 3 souls to level up]Harry let out a very long sigh of relief. The light on the fourth floor slowly returned to normal. The neon lights flickered briefly before finally shining brightly. He picked up the antique pen. Now, as he held it, the deadly chill had given way to a warm sensation that was submissive and obedient to his will.“Not bad work for an office worker who can only sit around,” praised the Spirit of the Padlock with a faint smile.“You

Suddenly, the sound of shattering glass rang out from the meeting room window at the end of the fourth-floor corridor! It wasn’t a direct attack on Harry, but a cloud of thick black smoke that had just burst through the glass. The smoke billowed on the wind, cutting through the darkness of the city this night. “That’s the guardian spirit of yet another cursed artifact that has just been awakened! We must capture it!” cried the Spirit of the Padlock.Harry turned around briefly to check that Boss Thomas was still breathing steadily beneath the neon-lit floor. He then ran down to the lobby via the emergency staircase. In the lobby, Jack was still standing restlessly by the glass door. As soon as he saw Harry appear, his shirt stained with ink and his hand wrapped in a makeshift bandage, Jack nearly jumped out of his skin.“Harry! Are you all right?! There was a loud crash from upstairs just now, and then the lights went out completely!” Jack stammered in a panic."I’ll explain later,

In Harry's inner vision, the black aura grew denser and darted sharply towards a point deep within the alley. The air inside the car suddenly felt colder, so much so that Jack’s breath formed a thin mist.He walked down the narrow, cobbled alley. The sound of his footsteps echoed faintly. The further he walked, the more the foul stench of rotting rat carcasses and the smell of old rust stung his nostrils. At the end of the alley stood a two-story building made of old ironwood, with a sign in front reading, ‘Medal Pawnshop & Art Gallery.'The cloud of black smoke he had been chasing earlier had, it turned out, gathered thickly above the roof of the building. It swirled round and round like a mysterious whirlwind, as if it were about to burst through a gap in the roof tiles!“The thing in there… is calling to its kin,” whispered the Spirit of the Padlock, appearing beside Harry's shoulder. “There’s another antique locked inside this building. And that cloud of black smoke will be the s
