Chapter 1; Job Hunt Gone Wrong

“This place is only reserved for the exclusives, you mister are not qualified to set foot here, now get away with this your ugly old shirt”

The receptionist waved her hand with a disgusted look on her face as she took in his outfit.

He wore a simple plain short sleeve and a black plain trouser , even though he looked neat and all tucked in, one could easily recognize that the cloth was not new due to some faded part.

He was not surprised that she figured out he was wearing a second hand cloth, but by her actions just now.

He just wanted to get a job in the Baron enterprise, it’s one of the best place to work wether as a high end manager or a a sales person in one of their numerous stores.

Yesterday, just when he went out for a jug in the morning, he overheard some men about his age talking about a job opening for numerous positions in the Baron enterprise.

He slowed down his running pace and jugged behind them so that he could gather as many information as he could.

He overheard them talking about the benefits of working with the enterprise at any level which include a minimum salary, a travel allowance and the best one that attracted him most; a place to stay.

An apartment was provided for the workers, it was very close to their working place and had the best appliances.

It would be a prayer answered for him if only he would be able to get this job.

Last Saturday, the landlord had appeared in front of his small cottage, according to his words, he is a kind human that’s why he didn’t send him parking immediately, but he had hoped that by the end of the month, Lucas should have vacated the house.

Lucas only had so little money in his hand, four hundred dollars to be precise, that was the amount of money his aunty had left for him before her demise.

That’s right, Lucas had grown up with his aunt Lisa in a small cottage, nobody else was with them, he also doesn’t have any knowledge of his family.

Any time he tried to ask aunt Lisa about his parents, she would beat around the bush or divert the question to another topic entirely never giving him a direct answer.

Since she had always treated him well, Lucas did not make it hard for her, he gave her a leeway and hoped that she would eventually open up to him when the time comes.

Unfortunately, the time never came and she had carried with her to the grave the identity of his parents leaving only his sur name; Baron.

But Lucas was not in a hurry to find his family, he doesn’t know if they’re alive or not, wether they were together or not, one thing he was sure was that they have deserted him.

“Miss, I am here to look for a job, at lest hear me out first, I have a high school diploma and I also applied to so many universities, I am capable of doing any job including the job of a messenger or a cleaner, can you just send me to the manager?”

“Didn’t you hear me earlier, I said we don’t have a job for you, just go back to the streets where you clearly belong”

Lucas tried his best to contain himself from being annoyed, after all he is here to find a job.

“C’mon Miss, please don’t jump into conclusions without taking a look of things, I have some works of experience, I worked as a waiter in McDonald’s for five years, I have human interaction experience, I don’t mind working as a sales person or even in an…”

Before he finished talking, he just saw her pouring water on him.

“I don’t care, you look like a nobody, you’ll send away our customers with the mere sight of you..”

Lucas could no longer contain his emotions, he was now fuming with anger, the lady just kept insulting him and had even gone overboard by pouring him water, he could no longer take it.

He moved closer to her, his face stiff and cold, his eyes already getting dark out of anger and frustration, he was about to forget that she was a lady and just slap her.

Just at that time, the manager came out of his office and noticed the tension in the air, he held his hand and asked what was happening.

“This man here is a thug, just because he borrowed clothes and came to this company, he thinks things would be done according to his wish, he even dared to slap me.”

She was now bolder because her boss was there.

“And because I told him we don’t have a job opening for people like him, he wanted to attack me, do you see why I said we couldn’t give him a job? What if you did not come and he beat me up..”. She started crying.

Lucas stood in the side and observed the manager consoling the receptionist, he was really impressed by their drama just now, in fact they should be in the entertainment industry not in front of a company.

“Because you didn’t hit her, I will let it go, however, you have to take responsibility for your actions and apologize to this lady and we’ll forget it ever happened”

Lucas eyed the manager and saw the serious look on his face, he didn’t feel like he did anything wrong, but for the sake of getting a job there, he suppressed his anger and mumbled some words of apologies.

“Accept my apologies young Miss” He bowed respectively.

“Since you are apologizing, I’ll overlook your actions” She smiled happy that she was able to make him feel inferior.

“Well you can go now” The manager looked at him with a dismissive look and walked in the direction of his office.

Lucas was fast enough to follow the man and paster him,

“Sir, now that the matter is settled, can we talk about the job opening in your office?”

He was optimistic that the manager would give him a job, but the manager turned and gave him a hard look.

“What is your name?” He asked.

“Lucas Baron”

“Who’s your family?” Lucas hesitated first before answering truthfully.

“My aunt just died so I currently don’t have a family”

“In that case, you don’t have anyone backing you so we can’t give you this job. Am sorry”

That was how the job hunt went for days, it was very fruitless and Lucas was becoming more frustrated at the way only the rich people get the slighted opportunity in the country.

He really didn’t know what to do.
