Chapter one

Gonzalez sits on the bed, lost in thoughts and unsure of what to do about his employment status.

He has been searching for a job for what seemed like a lifetime and yet he hasn’t been able to get one.

No company seemed to want him. Considering his qualifications and educational status, one would expect him to be on the top of the food chain.

He only has a good life at the moment because of his dazzling wife, Natasha. Her position in her family has been the sole foundation of their marriage, but he believes it is not proper for him to rely on her.

With a deep breath, he stands from the bed and makes his way to the restroom.

He stands in front of the toilet sink, turns the tap on and splashes water on his face.

Gonzalez hears the door to his bedroom open. There are footsteps and they seem to approach closer to the restroom.

“Gonzalez! Sweetheart, where are you?” Natasha’s voice echoes from the bedroom.

Gonzalez does not answer her. He is brushing his tooth as he had not done that earlier in the morning.

After brushing, he dries his face with a towel and applies lotion before returning to the bedroom.

“Gonzalez, there you are. I’ve been looking for you all over the place,” she scolds.

“I’m sorry. I was in the restroom. I heard you calling, but I couldn’t answer. I was brushing my teeth,” he responds.

“It’s fine. Why are you still at home though?” she asks him.

He is confused about her question. “Am I supposed to be somewhere?”

She sighs loudly. “You, my darling husband, are supposed to be at my mother’s office asking her for a job.”

“Natasha, you know how much your parents hate me. I can’t ask her for a job. She will never agree to it,” Gonzalez responds.

She scuffs and shows him a text on her phone. It is a text from her mom asking about when he would be in the office.

“She’s expecting me?” he asks, a smile gradually forming on his lips and she nods in agreement.

“That’s a miracle Natasha. How did you even convince her? You know what? It doesn’t matter. I had better go!” Gonzalez responds with excitement.

He scrambles across the room, searching for the file which contained his documents.

There is a smile on Natasha’s face. She seems so confident that things with her mother would go well today and that is what Gonzalez hopes for, too.

Natasha suddenly goes quiet. She places a hand on her tummy. Gonzalez pays her no attention at first, but he notices she is uneasy. He continues to search around for his files and he finally finds them.

“Victory!” he yells, holding up his files in his hand.

With that taken care of, he quickly gets dressed in his suit. Excited to meet with Natasha’s mother and hopefully be offered a job.

Her hands still placed on her tummy make Gonzalez uneasy.

“Natasha, is everything alright my love?” he asks.

“Gonzalez, I also have something to tell you,” Natasha declares, and he is now focused on her.

He gestures for her to speak, but she is hesitant. She looks at the wall clock in their bedroom and the time is ticking away.

“You know what? You should probably get to the office. We’ll talk when you get back,” she informs him.

Gonzalez walks up to Natasha and kisses her forehead.

“Wish me luck,” he whispers in her ear.

She chuckles. “You don’t need it, but good luck.”

“We are going to talk about whatever it is bugging you once I get back, alright?” He yells as he walks out the door.

Natasha falls on the bed and sighs dramatically.

“How am I going to tell your father about you?” she whispers to herself, rubbing her hands slowly on her tummy.

She needs Gonzalez to find a job or they could be forced to get a divorce and her mother would have her married to a man just the same age as her father.

*******

Gonzalez arrives at the office. He is directed to Mrs. Williams' office by a security guard in the reception room.

He knocks gently on the door and waits patiently to hear Mrs. Williams' voice from the office asking him to come in, but she never did.

After a few more moments of waiting, he turns the doorknob slowly and walks into the office.

Mr. and Mrs. Williams are together in the office. Their focused attention on each other shows they are discussing something very important.

“Um… Mrs. Williams. I’m here to talk to you about the job offer,” Gonzalez declares, his hands and feet shaking.

They both of them turn their attention to him. Mrs. Williams scuffs and slow claps.

“I believe this is a private discussion between the both of you,” Mr. Williams utters and stands to his feet.

He walks out of the office and leaves Gonzalez alone with his wife.

“You really had the guts to come here and ask me about a job,” Mrs. Williams declares.

Gonzalez is confused. He doesn’t know what to say anymore. He stammers.

“Well… um… I… I… Nat… Natasha.”

“Oh please, I know what Natasha said. She probably showed you a text from me asking when you would come for your interview or some bullshit,” she responds.

“Isn’t that why I am here?” Gonzalez asks.

“You really think you’re entitled to everything, don’t you?” Mrs. Williams asks.

Gonzalez is about to answer, but she doesn’t let him.

“My husband and I adopted you and took care of you. We trained you and took you as our son and you dared to get married to our daughter in the name of being in love with her!” Mrs. Williams yells.

Gonzalez’s smile now folds into a frown. He is embarrassed and regrets coming to the office.

“You never treated me like a son!” Gonzalez yells back at her.

“You never even considered me a human being. I was just a servant to you!” Gonzalez screams at the top of his voice, but Mrs. Williams doesn’t care.

“Get out of my office!” She yells, but Gonzalez refuses.

“You offered to talk to me about a job and I won’t leave here until you do so!” he demands.

Mrs. Williams picks up her phone from the table and makes a call.

“Get security in my office right now. There’s a guest who has overstayed his welcome,” she says over the phone.

A short moment later, five security officers walk into her office and the grab Gonzales forcefully by the arm.

“Let me go!” he yells, but they ignore his bickering.

He is dragged out of the office building and thrown out of the gates, his suit completely ruined.

“This is messed up!” he yells in pain.

His phone rings. An unknown number is calling, but he doesn’t want to answer it.

He stares at his phone screen until the call ends and outs it back into his pocket.

“What now?”
