A few days later, Zaid finally got a real task from the System.

[Watch Bassam for the next few days and do not take your eyes off him.]

Zaid was surprised. Why Bassam? And why does the System suddenly want him to keep his eyes on him? He started to think and then he got worried; Was Bassam in trouble, just like Ayman and the other boy before him? Did Bassam need his help?

He felt worried about his friend and decided to talk to him. He wanted to be open and see if Bassam would tell him what was wrong on his own. But when he tried, he didn't know what to say or how to start. They were sitting in their room; Zaid was studying math and Bassam was drawing in his sketchbook.

Zaid tried to ask him about his day. "Did anyone bother you today?"

"No," Bassam said. "No one picked on me."

"Are you having any problems?" Zaid asked.

"No, I'm all good," Bassam replied.

Zaid felt stuck. He wasn't getting anywhere. He changed the subject. "It's weird how Karam and Hossam have been so nice to me latel

Khamis pulled up to the curb in front of Zaid’s house and gave a quick, friendly wave. “Think about what I said, yeah? I’ll call you.”“I will. Thanks for the ride… and the food,” Zaid replied, getting out. He watched the car drive off before turning to the quiet house. He let himself in as quietly as he could, expecting to find his mother already busy in the kitchen. But the house was silent. A small frown creased his brow. His mother was always an early riser. Then, he heard it—the soft, melodic murmur of someone reciting Quran. It was coming from his room.Pushing the door open slowly, his heart swelled at the sight that greeted him. There, sitting in his chair by the window, was his grandmother, her reading glasses perched on her nose as she held a mus-haf.“Teta!” he breathed, his voice full of wonder. As soon as she saw him, her face lit up with a radiant smile. She began to stand, a little slowly, to greet him. But Zaid quickly rushed over to her, bending down to gently kiss he

The first thing Zaid saw when he opened his eyes was Khamis’s face, he was up way too early for a Saturday morning, and he was at Zaid's door.“Dude, Who visits this early on a Saturday?” Zaid groaned, pulling his blanket over his head. “It’s the weekend. Don’t you need to rest too?”But Khamis was already planted in his bedroom doorway, insisting they needed to talk. “It’ll be quick, I swear! Five minutes!”“Later,” Zaid said, his voice muffled by the pillow. “It’s my day off. I'm only going to get up to change clothes and go see my mom. And that does not involve you.”Khamis, didn’t know the meaning of the word ‘no’. He just pushed his way in. From the top bunk, a grumpy voice growled, “Some of us are trying to sleep. Shut Up! ”Zaid shot Khamis a triumphant look. “See? You’ve awakened him. Bassam wants to sleep, and you’re being super annoying, Please leave.”Khamis just grinned. “Okay, okay. New plan. You come with me. I’ll take you to this awesome place for breakfast, my treat. T

  • Chapter 26, The Offer.

The following morning took on a grim new routine. Before the first class, Bassam would wordlessly gather his things and leave for his mandatory therapy session. He always returned just before the bell rang, his mood visibly darker, his shoulders more hunched than when he’d left. The sessions seemed to drain him, not help him.One such morning, Zaid watched him slump at his desk, burying his head in his arms. A hollow feeling of helplessness settled in Zaid’s stomach. He didn’t know what to say or do. Reaching out the day before had only pushed Bassam further away. Then, an idea sparked. If he couldn't get through to Bassam directly, maybe he could understand what he was going through. He pulled out his phone, his thumbs flying across the screen. He searched for everything he could find: signs of depression in teenagers, how to help a friend who is isolating himself, why is my friend so angry and sad?He fell into a deep dive, reading article after article, his brow furrowed in concent

  • Chapter 25, Therapy Session.

Zaid watched Bassam with a growing sense of helplessness. His friend was still behaving strangely—his mood was perpetually low, he was depressed, reading obscure books, and constantly isolating himself to either read or draw. He had withdrawn completely, not speaking to anyone, not even to Zaid.Desperate, Zaid went to consult the school’s therapist. He explained the situation anxiously, hoping for some intervention. The therapist listened patiently but ultimately shook his head. “I understand your concern, Zaid, but Bassam has to come to my office himself and ask for help. I can’t force any student to attend sessions against their will.”Frustration boiled within Zaid. Just before leaving, he muttered under his breath, “If the parent of one of those rich kids with the white or blue cards had asked you for the same thing, you would’ve bent over backwards to help their son.” He didn’t wait for a response, shutting the door firmly behind him.Time was running out, and Zaid was growing i

A notification glowed on Zayd’s screen. The message was in a plain, official typeface, and it felt like a final verdict. As he read the words, a cold, tight knot of dread formed in his stomach. The system had given him one week. One week to figure out what was wrong with Bassam.A wave of pure disgust hit him. He shoved himself back from the desk, and his chair rolled away with a frustrated squeak. He dragged a hand over his face, trying to wipe away the anxiety the message had left behind.“Maybe there’s nothing wrong with him at all,” he muttered to the empty room, his voice low and full of contempt. He glared at the screen as if it were the system itself. “He’s just quiet. He’s always been quiet. Maybe this stupid system is just trying to scare me for no reason.”He stood up and started pacing the length of his small room, the message burning in his mind. The system, with all its complicated algorithms and invisible judgments, didn’t feel like a protector anymore. It felt like a sp
