Andre did not sleep again.

He sat on the edge of the narrow bed with the photograph in one hand and the phone in the other, staring between the two as if one of them might explain the other.

You are not the first.

Four words. Neat handwriting. No name. No threat, not exactly. But somehow it felt heavier than any threat could.

He thought about calling the police. Then he laughed at himself, quiet and bitter, alone in the dark room. What would he even say? A stranger tried to buy my haunted phone, and now somebody is leaving me photographs. Nobody would believe him. Nobody would care. He was still, in the eyes of the world, a homeless man who used to have a wife.

He looked down at the two hundred and ten dollars left from his winnings, folded carefully inside his shoe. Forty had gone to the room. The rest, he decided, would stay hidden until he understood what he was truly holding.

Around four in the morning, the phone in his hand grew slightly warm.

Andre nearly dropped it.

The countdown on the screen, which had been steadily ticking down all night, suddenly froze.

00:00:01.

00:00:00.

The screen went completely black.

Andre held his breath.

Then, slowly, white letters began to appear, one line at a time, like something typing them from very far away.

[COUNTDOWN COMPLETE.]

[NEW EVENT DETECTED: UNAUTHORIZED CONTACT.]

Andre's stomach dropped. Unauthorized contact. The envelope. The photograph. Somehow, the phone knew.

He stared at the screen, waiting.

[USER HISTORY ACCESS GRANTED.]

Andre's hands began to shake.

A list appeared, line by line, each one slower than the last, as if the phone wanted him to read every word carefully.

USER 001 — STATUS: DECEASED

USER 002 — STATUS: DECEASED

USER 003 — STATUS: MISSING

USER 004 — STATUS: UNKNOWN

Andre read the words again and again, hoping they would change into something less terrifying. They did not.

Deceased. Deceased. Missing. Unknown.

"What happened to you?" Andre whispered to the screen, to the ghosts of three strangers he would never meet. "What did this thing do to you?"

The screen did not answer his question. It never did. Instead, one final line appeared beneath the list.

CURRENT USER: ANDRE.

Seeing his own name written there, so plainly, so certainly, sent a cold shiver down his spine. The phone did not think of him as a man who found a lucky device in the trash.

It thought of him as the next name on a list.

Andre almost set the phone down and walked away from it forever. He almost believed, for one long moment, that the stranger under the bridge had been telling the truth. It is a chain. It will not let you go.

Then the final message appeared.

[WARNING: USER 004 IS LOOKING FOR YOU.]

Andre's whole body went still.

Status: unknown. Not dead. Not missing. Somewhere out there, alive, aware, and searching.

Was it the stranger from the car? The person sitting silently in the shadows of the back seat? Or someone else entirely, someone Andre had not even seen yet?

A sound came from downstairs. The front door of the shoe repair shop, creaking open.

Andre froze, every muscle locked tight.

Footsteps. Slow, careful, climbing the narrow staircase toward his room.

He looked around the small space in a panic. One window, facing the alley behind the building. One door, with a lock that suddenly did not feel strong enough.

The footsteps stopped right outside his door.

Andre grabbed the chair leg from the corner, his heart slamming against his ribs so hard it hurt.

A shadow moved beneath the door, blocking the thin line of hallway light.

Then, three slow knocks.

Andre did not move. Did not breathe. Did not answer.

"Andre." The voice through the door was low, careful, almost gentle. Not the same voice as the stranger from the bridge. Someone new. "I know you are awake. I know you can hear me."

Andre's grip tightened on the chair leg.

"I am not here to hurt you," the voice continued. "I am here because you are in more danger than you understand. The man who came to you last night, the one with the car, he does not care about you. He only cares about what is in your pocket."

Andre said nothing.

"There were others before you," the voice said. "I imagine you already know that now. The phone showed you, did it not?"

Andre's blood ran cold. How could this person possibly know what the screen had just shown him, only minutes ago, in a locked room, with no one else present?

"Who are you?" Andre finally asked, his voice barely steady.

A pause. Long. Careful.

"Someone who survived," the voice said. "Which is more than I can say for the others."

Then, footsteps again. Retreating this time, moving away from the door, down the stairs, out into the night.

Andre stood frozen for a long time before he finally found the courage to open the door.

The hallway was empty.

But resting against the wall, exactly where the footsteps had stopped, was a small folded piece of paper.

Andre picked it up with trembling fingers and unfolded it.

There was no photograph this time. Just a single address, written in the same careful handwriting as before.

17 Marrow Street. Midnight. Come alone.

Andre stared at the words until they blurred in front of his eyes.

He looked back at the phone in his hand. The screen had gone dark again, the countdown reset, silently ticking toward whatever came next.

Somewhere out in the city, three strangers had already lost everything because of what he was holding. One was searching for him right now. And another had just left an invitation Andre was certain he should refuse.

He knew he would not refuse it.

Because for the first time since Claire closed that door in the rain, Andre finally had a reason to walk toward something instead of running away from it.

Even if it killed him.

"I am going to see who it is," Andre said quietly."That is an enormous risk," Sara said immediately. "If that is Hale's people, or Diane's, walking outside is exactly what they are waiting for.""If they wanted to attack, they would have already done it," Andre said. "Whoever is in that car has been sitting still for ten minutes. That is not how Hale's people operate, and it is not how Diane operates either. This is something else."Voss studied him for a moment, then nodded once, reluctant. "I will cover the door. If anything moves wrong, you run back inside immediately."Andre stepped out into the cold night air, keeping his pace slow, deliberate, his eyes fixed on the still, silent sedan parked at the far end of the street. The driver's door opened before he had crossed half the distance.Andre stopped walking entirely.Claire stepped out, wrapped in a plain dark coat entirely unlike the tailored elegance Andre remembered from their life together, her hair pulled back simply, her

  • Chapter 38: What the Key Remembers

The medic's clinic turned out to be a converted garage behind a shuttered auto parts store, its windows blacked out, its interior far cleaner and better equipped than anything about its exterior suggested. The man himself, lean and grey haired, with the unhurried movements of someone who had handled far worse under far more chaotic conditions, took one look at Margaret and immediately began issuing quiet, efficient instructions."Table. Now. Someone keep pressure on that shoulder until I say otherwise."Andre and Sara obeyed without question, laying Margaret carefully across the exam table while the medic worked with practiced speed, cutting away fabric, examining the wound with a small penlight, his expression giving away nothing."Through and through," he said finally. "Clean enough, considering. She is lucky, or whoever fired that shot was not actually trying to kill her.""Will she live?" Andre asked."If infection does not set in, and if she stops trying to talk before I finish s

  • Chapter 37: What She Tried to Say

"We cannot carry her through the open street," Sara said, pressing her jacket hard against Margaret's shoulder, the fabric already soaked dark. "Not like this.""Then we do not use the street," Andre said, scanning the square quickly. Sirens were already rising somewhere in the distance, faint but climbing steadily closer. "There has to be another way out of this park."Margaret's eyes fluttered, her breathing shallow but steady, her grip still surprisingly strong around Andre's wrist. "Service gate," she managed, her voice thin. "North side. Behind the maintenance shed."They half carried, half dragged her across the darkened grass, staying low behind hedges and benches, Andre's heart pounding with every second that passed without another shot ringing out. The shooter had not fired again since the third round drove them behind the tower's base, but Andre did not trust the silence, not with Preston Hale's patient, methodical style still fresh in his memory. They found the gate exactly

Sara stared at the message for a long moment before finally typing a single reply.Where.The response came almost instantly. The old clock tower on Meridian Street. Tonight, when the bells strike nine. Come alone, Sara. Bring the boy if you must, but no one else.Andre read the words over her shoulder, his chest tightening. "She knows about me.""She seems to know a great many things she should not," Sara said, her voice unsteady in a way Andre rarely heard from her. They reached the garage twenty minutes later, exactly as planned, Voss and Mara already waiting inside, tense and watchful."Well?" Voss asked, reading the alarm plainly written across both their faces.Sara explained quickly, the message, the location, the instruction to come without the others."That is a trap," Mara said immediately. "It has to be.""Perhaps," Sara said. "Or perhaps she genuinely does not trust anyone else enough to risk being seen." She looked at Andre. "Either way, we do not have many other paths fo

  • Chapter 35: Nobody Runs

"Nobody runs," Andre said quietly, gripping Voss's arm before he could react to the sight of the sedan easing down the street.Voss's jaw tightened. "That is Diane Sterling's car.""I know. Running is exactly what she is watching for." Andre kept his voice low, steady, forcing calm into every word even as his pulse hammered. "If we bolt, we confirm we are exactly who she is looking for. If we walk, we are simply four people on a sidewalk."Mara's eyes darted toward the approaching sedan, then back to Andre. "Then what do we do?""Split," Andre said. "Sara, you and I continue straight, unhurried, like we have somewhere ordinary to be. Voss, take Mara left at the corner." He glanced at Voss. "The garage still has that second exit through the fence you showed me. Nobody watching the front would ever see us leave again. We meet there in twenty minutes, longer route, staggered timing." He looked at each of them in turn. "Whatever happens, do not look at that car directly. Do not change you

  • Chapter 34: A Face From Before

They found Voss waiting at a payphone two blocks from the old repair garage, exactly where he had told them to regroup if anything went wrong at the estate."You look like you crawled out of a collapsed building," Voss said, studying the dust still clinging to Andre's jacket."Close enough," Andre said.He filled Voss in quickly, the estate, Agnes, Diane Sterling, the photograph, the four words written on its back. Voss listened without interrupting, his expression sharpening with every new detail, until Andre finally reached the part that mattered most."Sara thinks she knows who wrote that note," Andre said. "But she is refusing to say more until she is certain."Voss's eyes moved to Sara. "That is not like you.""Being wrong about this particular person has consequences I am not willing to repeat," Sara said evenly. "I need to confirm it properly first.""Then confirm it," Andre said. "Whatever caution you are carrying, we do not have the luxury of moving slowly right now. Diane al
