The high industrial roof of the iron foundry vibrated under the heavy downpour.
Julian crouched in the shadow of a rusty ventilation housing, sixty feet above the ground. He held a tactical laser rangefinder against his night-vision visor, mapping the placement of Roderick’s overhead security array through the glass skylights below.
Inside, twenty heavily armed PMCs in dark urban camouflage held key defensive positions along the catwalks and near the heavy machinery. Below them, Roderick sat on an overturned anvil in the middle of the dirt arena, rolling a steel billiard ball between his massive, scarred knuckles.
"Handler check," Julian whispered, his breath making faint fog on the roof panel.
"Signal strong," Beatrix replied in his ear. Her voice was steady, accompanied by the faint, rapid hum of her cooling fans in Zurich. "I’ve mapped their internal network. The three heavy machine-gun nests aren't manually operated, Nine-Seven. They're automated sentry turrets linked to a central movement-tracking server mounted on the southern catwalk."
"Can you blind them?" Julian asked, pulling a glass-cutting wheel and a suction cup from his belt.
"Better," Beatrix said, a sharp edge entering her tone. "I’m injecting a spoofing payload into their optical bus. Once I trip the substation, the sentry turrets won't go offline—they’ll reset to default target parameters. To them, anyone holding an active military-grade transponder inside the hall becomes an enemy signature."
"Including Roderick’s men," Julian noted, applying the suction cup to the glass of the skylight.
"Including Roderick’s men," Beatrix confirmed. "Substation override sequence primed. I’m isolating the transformer grid for the east sector now."
"On my mark," Julian said. He spun the diamond-tipped cutter in a quiet, smooth circle, tapping the glass lightly with his gloved palm. A round sixteen-inch section popped free into his waiting grip.
He set the glass section aside, reaching into his vest for a pair of flash-bang grenades and an acoustic wire anchor.
Below, Roderick suddenly stopped rolling the steel ball in his palm. His head tilted toward the high ceiling, his small, dark eyes narrowing as a single drop of rain trickled down through the newly opened hole, striking the dirt ten feet away.
Roderick grinned, tossing the steel ball over his shoulder where it cracked against an iron pillar.
"Vane," Roderick called out, his deep voice booming off the corrugated walls. "Tell the boys on the catwalks to raise their sights. Our guest likes high perches."
"He’s onto the roof access," Beatrix warned instantly over the comms. "Catwalk guards are turning toward your sector!"
"Execute the dark sequence, Beatrix," Julian ordered, hooking his line to the steel roof truss. "Now."
"Grid dark!"
Two hundred yards away, the industrial substation blew its primary relays in a shower of blue sparks.
Inside the foundry, every halogen floodlight instantly died. The massive hall dropped into total pitch-blackness, saved only by the faint, eerie red glow of the automated sentry turrets' boot-up sequences.
Panic rippled through the mercenaries on the catwalks. Night-vision goggles were pulled down in haste, but before the optics could auto-adjust, Julian pulled the pins on both flash-bangs and dropped them through the skylight.
BANG-BANG!
A blinding flash of white light exploded fifty feet above the arena floor, accompanied by a deafening 170-decibel concussion wave. The mercenaries’ night-vision goggles instantly bloomed out, overloading their sensors and blinding the guards with pure white light.
Screams echoed across the iron catwalks as men clutched their ears and eyes.
"Fire!" Vane roared blindly into his comms, spraying automatic fire toward the ceiling. "Fire at the roof!"
Julian didn't wait. He stepped off the ledge, dropping thirty feet down his acoustic wire into the blinding smoke and darkness of the upper catwalks.
As he fell, Beatrix’s override payload executed.
The three automated sentry turrets locked onto the nearest active military transponders—the very radios worn by Roderick’s PMCs. The red lasers swept across the catwalks, locking onto the blinded guards.
RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!
Heavy 7.62mm rounds erupted from the automated sentry nests, tearing through the metal catwalks and sending Roderick’s own men falling into the darkness below.
"What are you doing?!" Roderick roared from the arena floor, his voice drowning out the gunfire as he drew a massive custom magnum from his chest holster. "Shut those damn guns down!"
"I can't!" Vane screamed from the southern catwalk, ducking as a sentry turret chewed through the steel girder beside his head. "The network’s locked! Someone hijacked the command server!"
In the darkness above, amid the chaotic roar of sentry fire and flashing red lasers, Operative Nine-Seven landed silently on the steel catwalk right behind Vane.
Julian’s gray eyes burned in the dark.
"Beatrix," Julian whispered coldly as he brought his suppressed pistol up to Vane's head. "Lock the exit doors."
"Exits sealed, Nine-Seven," Beatrix responded, her voice achillingly calm. "He’s all yours."

The Golden Cage
The heavy brass handle of the utility room door clicked softly as it settled back into place. Outside in the sixth-floor carpeted corridor, the low, steady murmur of string instruments drifted up from the grand ballroom below, mingling with the faint scent of expensive floral perfume and polished mahogany.Julian remained unmoving in the dim fluorescent light of the maintenance room. His fingers rested lightly against the handle of the non-metallic ceramic pistol concealed within his tuxedo jacket. Beside him, the black junction box hummed with high-frequency radio transmissions, its seven fiber-optic conduits glowing with a pale, rhythmic pulse as they carried monitoring signals into the structural heart of the Grand Hotel Vienna."Handler check," Julian murmured, his voice barely a breath against the air intake vent."Signal clear, Nine-Seven," Beatrix replied. Her voice in his ear was crisp, though the rapid background clatter of her keystrokes betrayed the immense strain she was u
Rigged Architecture
The Grand Hotel Vienna glowed under the cold, steady drizzle of the Austrian night. Inside the grand ballroom on the eighth floor, three hundred members of Europe's political and industrial elite mingled beneath crystal chandeliers, sipping champagne against a backdrop of classical strings. Two miles away, sitting in the back of a panel van parked in a dark alley near the Karlskirche, Julian adjusted his black tuxedo jacket. His gray hair was neatly combed back, and his earpiece was concealed beneath a layer of synthetic skin match."Handler check," Julian said quietly into the dark."Signal clear, Nine-Seven," Beatrix's voice came through instantly. In her Zurich sanctuary, her dual monitors displayed a split feed: a real-time thermal scan of the hotel's structural blueprint on the left, and a live hack of the building's internal security matrix on the right. "Felicity Brooke is in the ballroom. She's attending as an honored guest under the name Baroness von Brandt.""And the charges
The First Ledger
The steel I-beam tore through the air with a bone-chilling whistle, shattering the concrete pillar where Julian had stood half a second before. Clouds of gray dust and gravel exploded outward, peppering the surrounding darkness.Roderick didn't pause. He swung the massive steel beam in a violent horizontal arc, aiming to bisect Julian at the waist.Julian didn't back away. He ducked under the whistling steel, stepping into Roderick's guard. At fifty-two, Julian knew better than to match raw kinetic energy against a two-hundred-and-fifty-pound brute. Instead, he used Roderick's momentum. Julian drove a open-palm strike directly into the side of Roderick's throat, immediately following it with a brutal double-pipe strike to the nerve cluster inside his lead shoulder.Roderick gasped, his left arm going instantly numb. The heavy I-beam slipped from his grip, crashing onto the dirt arena floor with a deafening thud."You're fast, old man!" Roderick roared through gritted teeth, shaking of
The Cyber Face-Slap
Pfft.Vane’s body collapsed onto the steel catwalk before he could even register the shadow behind him. Julian caught the corpse by the tactical harness, stripping the central master keycard from his vest, and eased the weight down without making a sound. On the dirt floor thirty feet below, Roderick stood surrounded by muzzle flashes, dust, and the dying echoes of automated gunfire. The sentry turrets clicked empty one by one, their feed belts expended. Smoke hung thick in the air, illuminated only by the pulsing red emergency lights along the perimeter pillars.Roderick looked around at the bodies of his elite guards littering the arena floor. His teeth gritted into a snarl."Vane!" Roderick bellowed into his radio, his voice echoing off the corrugated iron walls. "Report! Where is he?!"The static crackled. Then, a cool, composure-shattering voice cut through the speaker:"Vane isn't on the comms anymore, Roderick."Roderick froze. He slowly turned toward the central observation pl

The Iron Wall
The morning air over Prague carried the metallic stench of the Vltava River and wet limestone. In a abandoned nineteenth-century iron foundry on the city’s industrial periphery, the heavy rhythmic clang of steel echoed through the cavernous rafters. Roderick Hayes stood in the center of the dirt arena, stripped to the waist, driving a sledgehammer into a massive tractor tire with mechanical, bone-shattering force. His body was a map of dense muscle, thick scar tissue, and dark tattoos. At six-foot-four and two hundred and fifty pounds, Roderick was the Obsidian Brotherhood’s heavy hammer—a man who had built his reputation not through shadow tradecraft, but through unstoppable, blunt violence. On the concrete balcony fifteen feet above the foundry floor, his second-in-command, a sharp-featured mercenary named Vane, leaned over the iron railing."Roderick," Vane called down, holding a satellite tablet. "Frankfurt went dark three hours ago. Quentin’s server vault was wiped. Local police
