The Grand Hotel Vienna glowed under the cold, steady drizzle of the Austrian night. Inside the grand ballroom on the eighth floor, three hundred members of Europe's political and industrial elite mingled beneath crystal chandeliers, sipping champagne against a backdrop of classical strings.

Two miles away, sitting in the back of a panel van parked in a dark alley near the Karlskirche, Julian adjusted his black tuxedo jacket. His gray hair was neatly combed back, and his earpiece was concealed beneath a layer of synthetic skin match.

"Handler check," Julian said quietly into the dark.

"Signal clear, Nine-Seven," Beatrix's voice came through instantly. In her Zurich sanctuary, her dual monitors displayed a split feed: a real-time thermal scan of the hotel's structural blueprint on the left, and a live hack of the building's internal security matrix on the right. "Felicity Brooke is in the ballroom. She's attending as an honored guest under the name Baroness von Brandt."

"And the charges?" Julian asked, checking the action of the miniature, non-metallic ceramic sidearm tucked into his inner jacket lining.

"Worse than I thought," Beatrix said, her tone dropping into a tense register. "She hasn't just rigged the basement. She's placed micro-demolition charges on seven primary load-bearing columns on floors six, seven, and eight. She’s turned the top three floors into a controlled implosion trap."

"She always was an artist," Julian murmured, his eyes narrowing as he looked up at the hotel’s ornate facade through the van's rain-streaked window. "Felicity doesn't like messy fights. She likes total collapse where everyone dies at once."

"Her detonator isn't a physical button," Beatrix added, her fingers executing a rapid diagnostic sweep. "It's tied to a heart-rate monitor disguised as a luxury wrist watch on her left arm. If her pulse spikes past one hundred and sixty—or if her heart stops—the charges trigger automatically. She’s built a dead-man's switch into her own body."

Julian took a slow, measured breath. "So I can't just put a bullet in her."

"No," Beatrix confirmed. "If you kill her, or if she panics, the top three floors collapse into the ballroom in under three seconds. Three hundred civilians die instantly."

"Then we disarm the network first," Julian said, opening the van door and stepping out into the cold rain. "Guide me to the central breaker hub."

"Accessing service elevator matrix now," Beatrix said. "Step through the side staff entrance in ten seconds. I'm looping the loading dock cameras... now."

Julian walked through the alley with a fluid, relaxed grace, stepping through the brass service door just as the magnetic latch disengaged with a soft click. He passed two kitchen staff without drawing a single glance, looking every bit like a high-society guest who had lost his way.

He slipped into the service elevator, and Beatrix immediately overrode the floor controls, sending the cab straight up to the sixth-floor utility corridor.

"The primary relay box for the sixth-floor charges is inside the HVAC maintenance room," Beatrix instructed as the elevator doors slid open onto a quiet, carpeted hallway. "Two guards in hotel staff uniforms are posted outside."

Julian stepped out, his footfalls silent on the plush runner.

The two guards turned at the sound of the elevator, their hands moving toward their jackets, but Julian was already inside their guard. He seized the first guard by the throat, driving his thumb into the carotid artery while using the man's body as a shield against the second guard's draw.

Before the second guard could clear his holster, Julian's left hand struck like a viper, snapping the man's wrist sideways and driving a short, sharp jab into his solar plexus.

Both guards dropped to the floor without a sound. Julian dragged them into the maintenance room, locking the door behind him.

Inside, mounted against the concrete wall, sat a black steel junction box humming with high-frequency radio waves. Seven thick fiber-optic cables snaked out from its base, running straight into the building's support columns.

"I'm looking at the relay box," Julian reported, pulling a small diagnostic bridge tool from his tuxedo pocket.

"Don't touch the fiber cables," Beatrix warned, her voice tight with concentration. "They're light-phase monitored. If the signal continuity drops by even one percent, the dead-man's switch receives a trigger signal."

"Can you bridge the receiver logic?" Julian asked.

"I'm working on it," Beatrix said. On her terminal in Zurich, lines of complex encryption code cascaded across her screen as she attempted to spoof the heart-rate signal being broadcast from Felicity's wristwatch. "Felicity’s using a rolling 1024-bit key that updates every three seconds. I need to capture two consecutive handshakes to clone her pulse signature."

Over the comms, the distant sound of classical music and polite laughter leaked through from the ballroom two floors above.

Suddenly, a soft chime echoed in Julian's ear.

"Nine-Seven," Beatrix said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "Felicity just left the ballroom. She's taking the private stairs down to the sixth floor. Her pulse just jumped to one hundred and ten. She knows someone is in the building."

Julian looked at the black junction box on the wall, then at the heavy steel door of the maintenance room.

"How long until you can clone the handshake, Handler?" Julian asked, his hand moving to the ceramic sidearm at his belt.

"Ninety seconds," Beatrix pleaded, her typing reaching a frantic, rhythmic speed. "Nine-Seven, do not engage her until I have the key! If her pulse spikes past one-sixty when she sees you, the whole roof comes down!"

The heavy brass handle of the maintenance room door slowly began to turn.

Julian stood still in the dim fluorescent light of the utility room, his face turning to stone.

"Hurry, Beatrix," Julian whispered into the dark. "She's at the door."
