Sean quickly rummaged through his backpack until his fingers closed around the flashlight. He pulled it out, clicked it on, and aimed the bright beam straight at Adrian's feet.

For a second, nobody breathed.

Then Sean let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief.

“It's just a plant.”

Adrian looked down.

His boot was planted firmly on a cluster of thick aloe vera leaves spilling out of a neglected garden bed. Their fleshy edges had bent sharply under his weight, and one leaf was partly crushed.

The machine continued to beep violently, its high-pitched alarm filling the ward. Adrian stared at the glowing monitor, trying to make sense of the erratic numbers and flashing red lines, but the data meant nothing to him.“What's wrong with him?” Mr. Sinclair demanded, his voice cracking as he gripped his son's pale hand. “Why is the machine doing that?”“Please, give me some space!” the nurse urged, checking the boy's pulse before pressing her stethoscope against his chest. Her expression tightened with deep worry. “Come on, sweetheart. Stay with me.”Sean stood frozen beside Adrian, his eyes darting between the nurse and the motionless child. “Adrian, is it the antidote? Did it do something to him?”“I don't know!” Adrian snapped, his voice betraying his mounting panic. He leaned closer to the bed, searching the boy's face for any sign of improvement or decline. The green discoloration still stained his skin, but the situation had shifted into a chaotic emergency, and Adrian couldn

The sudden fright had left his heart hammering violently against his ribs.Marcus noticed how pale he looked and stepped closer, clapping a heavy hand on his shoulder.“Easy,” Marcus said, his voice low and steady. “Breathe. Slowly. In and out.”Adrian tried to follow his instructions. He drew in a deep breath, held it for a beat, and released it. He repeated the process until the icy tightness in his chest began to loosen.Se

The moment Adrian swung the axe, a hand shot out of the darkness and caught the handle.Adrian’s breath hitched, his eyes widening. The figure stepped forward, the dim streetlamp cutting across his face.“Marcus?”Adrian exhaled sharply, a breath he hadn't realized he was holding, and lowered the axe.Sean, however, reacted entirely differently. He sprang to his feet and shoved Marcus hard in the chest.“You!” Sean snarled, his voice shaking with pent-up rage. “You're to blame for everything that's happening!”Marcus staggered half a step back, caught completely off guard by the sudden attack.Sean lunged forward to go after him again, but Adrian grabbed his arm and pulled him back.“Let go of me!” Sean struggled against his grip, straining toward Marcus. “He deserves to hear this!”He glared past Adrian, pointing an accusing finger. “You, Henry, and Mayor Harry are responsible for all of this! We tried to warn you, but none of you listened!”Marcus stood in silence, his expression he

“What if the creature found him?”Jake's question hung in the air, heavy and suffocating.Adrian stared down at the silent walkie-talkie in his hand, pressing the transmit button one last time.“Henry, respond. Can you hear me?”Only static answered. He lowered his thumb, the dead hiss of the channel echoing the hollow feeling in his chest. He turned his gaze toward the backpack resting on the table. Mr. Sinclair's son was still waiting for the antidote, and every second they wasted dragged the boy closer to the edge.“We have to move,” Adrian said, his voice dropping as he tightened the straps of his backpack.Sean glanced back at the silent radio. “What about Henry?”Adrian hesitated, the memory of Henry's desperate breathing and the horrific crunch that followed burning in his mind. “If he's alive, we'll find out when we get back. But right now, we have to save that boy.”Without another word, he hoisted the heavy axe and headed for the basement stairs. Sean followed closely behind

“No, we can't go out there!” Sam protested, her voice rising in panic as she backed away from the basement stairs. “We have to wait for the signal to come back.”Adrian stepped closer, his expression resolute. “Sam, I know you're terrified, but we have to save that boy. He's just a child, and he doesn't have much time left.”“And what about saving ourselves?” Jake argued, throwing his hands up. “Walking out into a city full of prehistoric monsters with a pocketknife and a stun gun is suicide!”Adrian swept his gaze over their pale, shaken faces. The fear in their eyes was undeniable, raw and suffocating. He couldn't force them to risk their lives, especially when he had no guarantee that he would survive himself.“Fine,” Adrian said quietly, his voice dropping. “I'll go by myself.”Sam stepped directly into his path, her arms crossed tightly over her chest. “And you honestly think you can survive out there alone? You literally watched one of those things tear a human being to pieces f
