The Aldridge family took Elena inside, still clinging to her as though afraid she might disappear again.

Adrian and Sophia climbed back into their car They were so exhausted, and finally they could breathe.

The Next Morning

Golden light spilled into the Lancaster dining room.

Adrian and Sophia sat at the long breakfast table, steam rising from their cups of coffee. Sophia’s eyes, however, were sharp with curiosity.

“Adrian,” she said, setting down her cup. “Why is Clara only just starting school now?

"She’s twelve already.”

Adrian’s fork paused mid-air for a moment before resuming his food.

“She was unwell before,” he said. “Too Fragile for the outside world. But now… she’s healed completely.”

Sophia’s eyes widened slightly as she remembered how Adrian had been chasing some rare herbs.

“That’s why you were searching for those rare herbs?”

“And also, while you wanted the mind pulse so badly.”

Adrian gave a slight nod.

At that moment, light footsteps thundered down the staircase.
