Chapter Six
Silence swept the crowd.
Elena’s breath caught, her fingers curling into fists at her side.Lucas forced a smile, though his teeth clenched. “Honored guest…? He's poor and useless, and I don't understand whatever he must have said to you, Miss Catherine, he's a liar. Don't allow him to trick you.”
“ Do I look like someone who can be tricked in your eyes? Trust me, I'm smarter than that.”
Catherine snorted, took Adrian’s arm, and walked into the banquet hall without paying them any further attention.
Elena’s heart twisted as she followed Lucas into the banquet hall. She had just divorced Adrian—barely freed herself, she thought—and yet, in what felt like a blink, he stood confidently at the side of a woman like Catherine Moretti. A woman more powerful, more dazzling, more untouchable than Elena could ever dream of being.
The discomfort gnawed at her chest, bitter and sharp.
But so what? He was still trying to rely on women to make a living. Thinking of that, a hint of disappointment flashed in her eyes.
Inside the grand hall, conversation swelled like a tide. The chandeliers blazed overhead, scattering brilliance across tables lined with velvet and crystal. Guests swirled like currents, each smile hiding ambition, each greeting dripping with calculation.
And at the center of it all stood Lucas Brown.
The moment he stepped in, guests flocked to him as if drawn by gravity. Businessmen and politicians greeted him warmly, their laughter exaggerated, their words filled with flattery.
“Mr. Brown, what an honor to see you tonight!”
“Ah, such a fine couple! Miss Elena and you truly are a perfect match.”
“Yes, yes—no doubt the most enviable pair in the city!”
Lucas basked in their attention, his chest swelling with pride. He exchanged handshakes like a king granting favor to his subjects, his smile broadening with every compliment.
One guest leaned in conspiratorially.
“ I hear the auction tonight features a most extraordinary treasure. A vintage ring from the private collection of Chairman Armstrong, the president of the Business Association himself. Rumor has it, it’s worth a fortune. But who else could possibly afford it, if not you?”
Lucas’s eyes glittered, and he threw his head back with a laugh.
“That ring? Hah! Then it’s as good as mine already. No one here can outbid me.”
The circle erupted in polite laughter, eager to echo his arrogance.
But across the room, Catherine Moretti’s lips curved into a sharp smile. Her voice carried just enough for all to hear.
“Really? What a bold claim. But let me correct you. If Adrian wanted to, he could buy not just that ring—he could buy out this entire auction house.”
A beat of stunned silence filled the air.
And then came the laughter.
It rolled through the crowd, mocking, cruel, dismissive. Heads turned toward Adrian, their eyes dripping with ridicule.
“That guy? Please—he couldn’t afford a meal in here, let alone an auction house.”
"What trick is he using to make her speak for him?”
The whispers grew, biting, poisonous.
Lucas smirked, seizing the moment. “Director Moretti, surely you’re joking. Adrian Cole? The same man Elena divorced because he couldn’t even pay the bills? A man like him has no place here, let alone in an auction.”
Adrian, who had been silent through it all, finally stirred. His expression was calm, detached, as if the sneers and insults around him didn’t even reach his ears. He looked toward Lucas, then at the ring displayed on the auction list, its gleaming image stirring something deep in his chest.
“I’m not interested in buying the whole auction,” Adrian said evenly, his voice cutting through the laughter.
“But that ring…” His eyes hardened, a glint of determination sparking like fire. “…is mine.”
The room fell still.

Chapter 147Lysa returned just before dusk. Her arms were full of grocery bags, her steps light despite the weight, humming softly to herself as she pushed the door open with her shoulder.“I’m back,” she called out cheerfully. The apartment was silent.Too silent.Lysa paused, frowning slightly.“Your Highness?” she called again. No answer. She set the bags down carefully and walked further in, peeking into the living room, then the kitchen.Empty.Her heart skipped. She hurried toward the bedroom, then Leon’s study—both empty. Finally, she turned back to the living room, where Leon stood near the window, hands behind his back, gazing outside as if lost in thought.“Leon,” Lysa said quickly, relief flickering before turning to concern. “Where is Her Highness?”Leon turned slowly.“Oh,” he replied calmly. “She went out.”Lysa blinked. “…Went out?”“Yes,” Leon said, his voice even. “She said she needed to get something.”Lysa’s brows knitted immediately.“That’s not possible,” she said

Chapter 146Princess Elowen hadn’t planned to disobey Leon. But unease had been growing in her chest all morning. It started when she woke up.The dream still clung to her bones—fragments of collapsing skies, Adrian’s fading silhouette, a gate that refused her passage. Even after opening her eyes, the weight of it refused to leave.Leon had brushed it off, as always.“Dreams here mean nothing,” he had said calmly. “You’re safe.”Safe.The word echoed strangely now.Elowen sat on the edge of the bed, fingers clenched in the sheets. Something was wrong. Not loudly. Not obviously. But subtly—like a thread pulled too tight. She pressed a hand to her chest. Her spiritual flow felt… uneven.Muted.Blocked in places it shouldn’t be.That realization alone was enough to make her stand.Lysa had gone out earlier with a list Leon gave her. Leon himself had stepped out “to handle work matters,” leaving Elowen alone in the apartment.Alone with thoughts she could no longer ignore.“If my power fe

Chapter 145Leon moved silently through the apartment, his footsteps soundless against the polished floor. He stopped in front of the tall bookshelf near the far wall—the one no one ever questioned. It was filled with old volumes, some modern, some yellowed with age, arranged carefully, deliberately. To anyone else, it was just decoration. To Leon, it was a door.He reached out and pressed two fingers against the spine of an unmarked book. There was no sound. No click. No mechanical shift. The air rippled. The shelf shimmered briefly, then slid aside as if it had never been solid at all, revealing a narrow passage swallowed in darkness.Leon stepped through. The hidden door sealed itself behind him, the bookshelf returning to its perfect, harmless position.Inside, the world changed. The air was heavier here—thick with spiritual pressure, ancient and humming, like a beast breathing in its sleep. Faint light glowed from intricate arrays carved into the floor and walls, lines of power w

Chapter 144The announcement arrived quietly at first. An internal memo circulated through executive channels before dawn, its language precise and polished, each word weighed carefully as if it carried more than information—it carried reassurance. The Chairman will formally resume control of the company in two days’ time. That single sentence sent ripples through every department.By midmorning, the news had spread beyond boardrooms and offices, spilling into business forums, investor chats, and whispered conversations in glass-walled conference rooms. Analysts speculated. Employees straightened their backs. Partners who had been growing restless suddenly became patient again. The reason followed soon after. The Chairman has been occupied with urgent overseas matters, which required his continued absence. All major decisions have been temporarily delegated under his instruction. His return marks the beginning of a new operational phase. It was vague. Intentionally so.But to those wh
