Chapter Six

 Silence swept the crowd.

Elena’s breath caught, her fingers curling into fists at her side.

Lucas forced a smile, though his teeth clenched. “Honored guest…? He's poor and useless, and I don't understand whatever he must have said to you, Miss Catherine, he's a liar. Don't allow him to trick you.”

“ Do I look like someone who can be tricked in your eyes? Trust me, I'm smarter than that.

Catherine snorted, took Adrian’s arm, and walked into the banquet hall without paying them any further attention.

Elena’s heart twisted as she followed Lucas into the banquet hall. She had just divorced Adrian—barely freed herself, she thought—and yet, in what felt like a blink, he stood confidently at the side of a woman like Catherine Moretti. A woman more powerful, more dazzling, more untouchable than Elena could ever dream of being.

The discomfort gnawed at her chest, bitter and sharp.

But so what? He was still trying to rely on women to make a living. Thinking of that, a hint of disappointment flashed in her eyes.

Inside the grand hall, conversation swelled like a tide. The chandeliers blazed overhead, scattering brilliance across tables lined with velvet and crystal. Guests swirled like currents, each smile hiding ambition, each greeting dripping with calculation.

And at the center of it all stood Lucas Brown.

The moment he stepped in, guests flocked to him as if drawn by gravity. Businessmen and politicians greeted him warmly, their laughter exaggerated, their words filled with flattery.

“Mr. Brown, what an honor to see you tonight!”

“Ah, such a fine couple! Miss Elena and you truly are a perfect match.”

“Yes, yes—no doubt the most enviable pair in the city!”

Lucas basked in their attention, his chest swelling with pride. He exchanged handshakes like a king granting favor to his subjects, his smile broadening with every compliment.

One guest leaned in conspiratorially.

“ I hear the auction tonight features a most extraordinary treasure. A vintage ring from the private collection of Chairman Armstrong, the president of the Business Association himself. Rumor has it, it’s worth a fortune. But who else could possibly afford it, if not you?”

Lucas’s eyes glittered, and he threw his head back with a laugh.

“That ring? Hah! Then it’s as good as mine already. No one here can outbid me.”

The circle erupted in polite laughter, eager to echo his arrogance.

But across the room, Catherine Moretti’s lips curved into a sharp smile. Her voice carried just enough for all to hear.

“Really? What a bold claim. But let me correct you. If Adrian wanted to, he could buy not just that ring—he could buy out this entire auction house.”

A beat of stunned silence filled the air.

And then came the laughter.

It rolled through the crowd, mocking, cruel, dismissive. Heads turned toward Adrian, their eyes dripping with ridicule.

“That guy? Please—he couldn’t afford a meal in here, let alone an auction house.”

"What trick is he using to make her speak for him?”

The whispers grew, biting, poisonous.

Lucas smirked, seizing the moment. “Director Moretti, surely you’re joking. Adrian Cole? The same man Elena divorced because he couldn’t even pay the bills? A man like him has no place here, let alone in an auction.”

Adrian, who had been silent through it all, finally stirred. His expression was calm, detached, as if the sneers and insults around him didn’t even reach his ears. He looked toward Lucas, then at the ring displayed on the auction list, its gleaming image stirring something deep in his chest.

“I’m not interested in buying the whole auction,” Adrian said evenly, his voice cutting through the laughter.

“But that ring…” His eyes hardened, a glint of determination sparking like fire. “…is mine.”

The room fell still.

Chapter 43The hall was frozen in stunned silence.Moments ago, Liam Wharton had strutted across the room, basking in admiration and privilege. Now, he stood pale and trembling — his grand announcement shattered in front of hundreds of witnesses.Whispers broke the silence, soft at first, then spreading like a tide.“Did you see that? He just made one call and the Coles canceled everything.”“Wait— wasn’t there a rumor that Miss Reyes had a mysterious partner she's seen?”“You think it’s him?”“It must be. No one else could have that authority.”Suddenly, the same people who had laughed at Adrian minutes ago now looked at him with quiet reverence, their faces shifting from mockery to awe. Some even offered tentative smiles, the kind reserved for those who suddenly realized they had insulted the wrong man.Catherine could feel the change in the air — fear and fascination mingled like perfume and smoke. For a brief moment, she almost pitied Liam. Almost.Liam stumbled forward, his voice

Chapter 42Liam raised his voice deliberately so that everyone nearby could hear. His smug smile widened as conversations began to quiet.“You see, Catherine?” he said loudly, swirling his glass of champagne. “You could’ve chosen me. Now that the Wharton Group is officially working with the Coles, I’m practically in the same circle as your grandfather. But instead, you chose to stand beside this… nobody.”The sharp edge in his tone drew eyes from every direction. His friends laughed on cue, their voices blending into a chorus of mockery.Whispers rippled through the hall.“Is that true?” someone murmured.“She’s the manager of the National Bank, right? And that guy with her — who is he?”“Probably some freeloader chasing after her money,” another guest snickered.Catherine’s chest tightened. The humiliation burned her ears, but she forced her expression to remain calm. “Liam,” she said coldly, “you’re making a scene. Let go of whatever grudge you have and—”Before she could finish, Li

The luxury hotel’s ballroom shimmered like a field of stars. Crystal chandeliers spilled gold light across marble floors polished to a mirror sheen. The air was thick with perfume, laughter, and the muted clinking of glasses. Waiters in white gloves glided through the crowd, balancing trays of champagne as conversations rippled from one cluster of elites to another.Catherine entered beside Adrian, her posture elegant but her eyes quietly scanning the hall. She had attended countless events like this, yet tonight felt heavier, more dangerous. The smiles looked sharper; the compliments sounded like veiled threats.Adrian walked beside her in a simple black suit, no tie, his calm presence somehow drawing eyes without effort. Though he said little, people’s gazes followed him — not because they recognized him, but because of the quiet power in his bearing. There was an ease in the way he moved, like someone who knew the world could never shake him.“Everyone here,” Catherine murmured sof

Chapter 40The hotel room was quiet, the evening light spilling faintly across the marble floor. Adrian sat by the window, his fingers turning the pages of an old medical text — Ancient Meridian Theory and Applied Acupuncture. The faint scent of herbs drifted from a nearby porcelain pot, one he had prepared earlier for concentration. He was halfway through a paragraph when his phone buzzed on the table. He glanced at the screen — Catherine. He answered. “Catherine?”Her voice came through gently, but there was a tremor beneath the calm. “Adrian, I hope I’m not disturbing you.”“You’re not,” he replied, closing the book. “What’s wrong?”She hesitated for a few seconds before speaking. “There’s… an event tomorrow evening. It’s a medical charity gala hosted by the Health Alliance and a few corporate sponsors. It’s very high-profile. The Whartons, the Andersons, maybe the Cole's everyone will be there. Even foreign dignitaries. My grandfather received a personal invitation.”Adrian leaned

The night had settled thick over the city — a quiet, oppressive kind of darkness that swallowed every streetlight and left the air humming with unease. Beyond the bustling districts and glass towers, there stood a structure few knew existed. Hidden within the old quarter, walled by time and secrecy, was a sprawling compound of gray stone and arched corridors — a place known only to those who carried the mark of the Elder Pavilion. From the outside, it looked like an abandoned temple — its doors carved with fading runes, its pillars wrapped in creeping vines. But inside, it was alive with quiet purpose. Torches burned blue instead of gold. Strange instruments lined the walls — glass flasks, scrolls, and relics no modern eye had seen. Every object breathed of power, discipline, and control. In the heart of that place lay the Hall of Balance, a vast circular chamber floored with black marble. In the very center, embedded into the ground, was an eclipse-shaped sigil — half silver, half s

Chapter Thirty-EightEvening came early that day. The fading sunlight stretched long shadows across the hotel room as Adrian arranged the sketch on the coffee table, waiting. He had spent the day trying to make sense of the fragments now crowding his memory — flashes of faces, voices, and moments that once seemed lost forever.A soft knock interrupted his thoughts.“Come in,” he said. The door opened and Isabella stepped inside, composed as always. Her hair was neatly tied back, and the faint trace of perfume followed her as she crossed the room. “Young Master,” she greeted, her tone warm but formal. “You said you finished the drawing?”Adrian nodded and gestured to the sketch. “Yes. Take a look.”She approached the table, heels clicking softly against the floor. The moment her gaze fell on the drawing, her expression shifted — her eyes widening before she drew in a sharp breath.“This man…” she murmured. Her voice faltered, the steadiness in her tone giving way to quiet disbelief.“Y
