Julian woke up to the sound of rain tapping against the window. The room was dark and cold, though his blanket was warm. For a second, he thought, he was dreaming. Everything felt wrong, quiet in a way that made his chest tighten.
He turned his head. His mother was standing beside his bed. She didn't move, didn't speak, just stared down at him with tired eyes.
"Julian," she whispered. "Come."
Her voice shook a little.
There was no time to ask questions. Without a word of explanation, she helped him into his jacket, her hands freezing and shivering as she forced him out into the empty, marble hallway. The whispers echoed from the shadows as the maids bowed and moved past.
"Why him? Why not the brother?"
"He's weak. He won't survive it."
"The main house ordered it."
Outside, black suited servants waited by a car in the pouring rain. Kneeling in the mud, his mother gripped his shoulders, her voice breaking as she said, "You're going to the training center the main family built... Please be strong and make us proud."
Before he could ask why his twin brother was spared, she turned away, her last good bye through the rain looking desperate.
The car door slammed shut with a dull thunk, taking him into silence until his consciousness faded.
When his eyes snapped open, a bright light slammed onto them.
The cold metal strapped tight against his arms and legs, pinning him down inside a transparent glass box. Around him, a vast hall echoed with the terrified screams and weeping of dozens of other children trapped in identical straps like him.
And then pairs of boots clicked against the floor together in a rhythm. A tall, stone faced man strode to the center of the room, flanked by armed guards.
"Children of Zoldyck, Welcome to the Trial of Metal," the man announced, his voice passing cleanly through the chaos. "In front of you, under the cover, there is a dismantled revolver. Remove the cover."
With a clicking sound, the arm restraints unlocked. Julian's hands trembled vehemently as he lifted the cover. The gun parts were scattered across the table like broken bones. Across the transparent partition, another terrified boy stared down at the same gun parts.
"You can't do this!" a boy from a wealthy branch screamed, slamming his cover shut. "My grandfather's an elder—!"
Bang!
The gunshot pierced him before he completed his sentence. The boy fell forward onto the table, his pants staining with blood as the terror of death filled the room.
The man didn't even blink. "He knew. Now you do. Your task is simple. Assemble the revolver. Kill the child in front of you before they kill you. That’s all."
The panic instantly filled across the hall. Another gunshot echoed, followed by the wet splash of blood against glass.
"Every twenty seconds without a gunshot, another pair dies. You have thirty minutes, now begin!"
Julian gasped, his chest heaving against the straps as his thoughts screamed. Across from him, the other boy was frantically fumbling with the gun parts. Julian forced his shaking hands to move, grabbing parts, trying to assemble them before the other child did.
Bang!
A bullet shattered the side of the glass partition between them. Julian jerked back in shock, his handful of bullets slipping from his fingers and rolling across the table.
The boy in front of him smiled viciously, raising his weapon for a clean kill. Julian had no bullets left on his side, trapped and out of time.
One shot. His eyes locked onto a single bullet resting near the edge of the table. With one shot... I can survive.
Born like a ghost in the Zoldyck household, locked away because he was a weak body, Julian had spent years playing with toy guns and studying revolvers under his father's strict, merciless drills. He had never lost an assembly test.
Julian lunged forward instantly, and slammed the final bullet into the gun magazine before snapping it shut, and held the gun. He aimed slightly aside, his hands shivering. The opponent’s confidence broke for a second and in that second, Julian pulled the trigger.
Bang!
The boy collapsed, blood pooling across the surface. Julian dropped the gun, his breath becoming dry because of fear and disdain. He had killed someone. A kid just like him.
As more gunshots echoed through the chamber, sheer pain suddenly ripped through Julian's skull.
The blueprints, metalwork numbers, the roar of factory machines, and the steady, older voice of a seasoned weapons engineer filled across his thoughts like a wild storm. He can feel the smell of machinery oil and frantical thoughts of machines in his mind.
Memories of a past life… a life spent designing tools for war lingered slowly deep inside his mind.
This… is a…a memory, Julian gasped, gripping the table edge as the visions faded. His eyes twitched, giving way to a dangerous, predatory resolve.

Increase of threat
The landscape was wide and open. Snow stretched in every direction, smooth and white, glittering under the dim early morning light. A thin stream ran through the scene, its water flowing softly over rounded stones. There were no birds, no wind. Just quiet. From the freezing stream, Julian dragged himself out.His arms trembled as he pulled his soaked body onto the snow-covered bank, coughing up icy water that had filled his lungs during the fall. He lay flat on the ground, gasping, every breath cutting like knives in his throat. His skin was pale like paper, dark circles shaded his eyes, and the wound on his side had opened again, dripping blood that melted tiny red dots into the snow. His clothes clung to him, soaked. Only the strap across his shoulder reminded him that his supply bag was still with him… though it too was soaked and half-frozen. The cold was worse than before, plus the fact that he was weak to cold made his condition worse. Julian stared up at the moon, still faintl
A close step toward growth
Julian stood still for a moment, breath misting in the icy night air, staring at the dozens of arrows aimed directly at him. The tips glinted under the pale moonlight like silver teeth, ready to rip him apart. Behind him, the forest stretched wide and black, a maze of snow laden trees swaying gently in the wind. The cold gnawed at his skin, yet sweat ran down his spine."Well, this is definitely not what I expected," he muttered to himself, a dry, bitter chuckle escaping his lips. "A step closer to death… is just a step closer to growth."He looked up; eyes sharper than they had been moments ago resolved surging despite the pain throbbing in his side. "I choose the wolves."His words made the armed group hesitate. A few of them looked at one another in disbelief. Only Miya didn't flinch. Her smirk stayed, her eyes studying him like he was a puzzle she already knew the answer to."You sure you don't want holes in your body instead of being torn to shreds?" she asked, tilting her head s
Choose your destiny.
The clearing fell silent except for the sound of distant wind and the soft crunch of snow under boots. The cold air bit at Julian's skin, and his breath steamed in the chill like smoke. In front of him, Miya stood at ease, her long black hair swaying lightly in the breeze. Behind her, a small squad of armed teens waited, tense but obedient."How dare you speak to Lady Miya like that?" A girl stepped out from Miya's right; her bow was already drawn tight. Her black and blue hair glimmered slightly under the pale moonlight, and her icy blue eyes locked on Julian with a glare sharp enough to cut steel. "Do you even understand the situation you're in?" "Nina." The name came from Miya, her tone calm but playful. She raised one hand like she was about to scold a child. "Calm down. It's fine. Honestly, I like his confidence."Her eyes turned back to Julian, narrowing ever so slightly as her lips curved into an almost amused smile. "You know," she added casually, "not everyone can take down
Killing spree
"Argh!" Julian's voice cracked through the cave as the wooden stake stabbed into his side. Pain shot up his ribs, but he didn't fall. His hand gripped the sharpened stake instinctively, blood seeping between his fingers as his body stiffened.Marcus didn't hesitate. He grabbed Julian by the collar and yanked hard, his eyes wild, like adrenaline had taken over. Julian's feet left the ground for a second before his back slammed into the stone cave wall with a thud that rattled the campfire embers. Marcus exhaled sharply, forcing a cocky grin. "Well, that was easy," he said, though his voice shook slightly. "Gena, send the signal. Now."Gena, standing near their bags, hesitated for only a moment before rummaging through them. The small orange glow of the campfire danced over her pale face, her expression somewhere between relief and unease. She pulled out a flare gun, its polished metal reflecting the firelight."I really thought we blew our cover back there," Lucas muttered, his laugh
Strange Group
The air inside the cave smelled of pine sap, smoke, and a hint of ash. It was warmer now, thanks to the fire and the stone walls that trapped the heat. The shadows danced along the walls, and outside the cave's mouth, the world was black, except for the occasional glint of moonlight reflecting off untouched snow.Peter, the boy who had been badly injured when they first arrived, leaned against the cave wall, his head supported by Gena as she spoon-fed him water from a wooden cup Julian had carved. He was awake now, pale and groggy, but alive."Thank you again," Marcus said, breaking the quiet. "I mean it. For everything."Julian sat with his legs crossed near the fire, poking at the embers with a stick. "No problem," he replied, though his voice sounded distant. He stared into the flames for a moment longer, thinking. He felt nervous in their presence. He wasn't used to speaking with people outside of his mother, the maids, and a few guards, but he knew those thoughts didn't matter he
Trial Two
The wooden doors of the trial hall slowly opened, drawing everyone’s attention to the center where the chief examiner stood flanked by elite guards wearing dark black jackets, and three-star gold trimmed badges. And the chief examiner has 4 stars, the same as Athena. He was Kyle Raymond. The examiner stepped forward, his voice cutting through the silent hall. "Children of Zoldyck, the second trial begins now. This is a survival test. Seven days and out in the wild. You will be allowed to form your own seven member teams by choice. We will blindfold each of you before moving out. When the cloth comes off... you'll be in the field."His gaze darted across the children. "Our blood runs like steel, skin strong as titanium, and our hearts with cold resolve. Prove that you deserve the name Zoldyck."The guards quickly moved across the hall, distributing black duffle bags filled with essential gear like blankets, rations, a tool kit, a pot, and a survival knife before covering blindfolds ove
