Julian stood frozen, his eyes pale as he stared at the dead children surrounding him. The pools of fresh blood and gore reflected the ceiling lights, mingling with tears, urine, and vomit near the drainage grates.
The air reeked of foul stench, so thick it choked his lungs. Right in front of him, the boy he had just shot remained dead with terrified look over the table, a thin drool dripping from his lips. Julian’s hands still shivered as the look of terror in the boy's eyes stuck in his mind.
With a clack, the glass boxes hissed open. The children scrambled out in panic, desperate to escape. Julian forced his trembling legs to move, stepping past the horror.
The examiner with the long coat walked back into the room, his boots clicking like gunshots against the bloody floor.
"Children of Zoldyck, congratulations on passing the first trial of the Trial of Metal," his angry voice echoed. "You'll be moving on. This trial was made to forge strength for the new age of Zoldyck and Brimstone. And if any of you think this is just for the lower branches, you're wrong. Even the main head's children are here. No one is treated special."
A tense ripple lingered through the crowd. Julian looked at the survivors. The main family children stood out, their eyes hollow and expressionless even after a room full of corpses.
Julian, with his mixed black and white hair and lower branch bloodline, looked out of place.
"There will be nine trials," the examiner continued the explanation. "The highest ranking survivor will become the heir."
Heir. The word ignited ambition across the room before guards moved in to clear the bodies like trash.
As the children moved forward, there was a grey corridor with flickering lamps, and the children moved into the rooms they had been assigned to. Over eighty isolated cells awaited them.
The moment the door clicked shut behind Julian, he rushed to the bathroom and collapsed in front of the toilet slowly with a pale gaze. He vomited everything, clutching the tap as his stomach twitched in pain.
He stared into the mirror above the sink. His pale skin, cheeks, and dark eyes stared back like a stranger's.
What were those memories? My past life? He muttered to himself, trying to steady his breathing. I need to calm down…
Then, footsteps tapped sharply behind him. It was more than one pair.
He turned around. A group of five teenagers blocked the exit. At the front, there was a girl with snow white hair and pale eyes, emanating the high-line royalty.
"That's him," one of the boys sneered, pointing a finger.
Julian blinked. "What's going on? Why is there a girl in the boys'—"
Wham!
A strong fist smashed into Julian's cheek, snapping his head sideways into the mirror with a crack. A follow-up kick to the chest made him kneel, wheezing on the tile floor. Someone in the background whispered in terror, "That's Lisanna… from the Higher-line…"
The blood dripped down from Julian's forehead, stinging his right eye as he coughed up blood too.
Lisanna folded her arms, her voice was sharp. "The boy you killed… he was my brother."
Julian's stomach dropped down. "Wait… I didn't know, I was just trying to survive…"
"Let's just kill him," a red-haired boy muttered, grabbing Julian by the collar and thrusting another punch into his stomach. "He's just trash."
"Choke him in the toilet," Lisanna ordered, clicking her tongue.
Two boys yanked Julian up, dragging his shoes across the floor as he gasped desperately for air. His vision faded to black as they pinned him down. So this is it. I'm going to die again.
"Enough."
The deep voice of a female guard cracked through the room, freezing everyone in place. She stepped into the doorway, her broad shoulders and stern expression showing sheer authority.
"No fights are allowed after a trial. What's going on here?" she asked, her voice booming.
Lisanna forced a mockery smirk. "Just taking out the trash."
The guard's gaze turned to anger. "Release him. Now. Unless you want to test the punishment rules for Higher-line children."
Lisanna twitched, her arrogance flickering. "…Let him go," she muttered.
Dropping Julian roughly to the floor, the group moved out from his room. The guard stared down at Julian. "Be careful, brat."
With his body aching and legs shaking, Julian helped himself up, moving step by step through the room under the guard's watch until he slept on his bed. And the guard left, locking his room.
The second the latch clicked, his knees gave out, and everything went black.

Increase of threat
The landscape was wide and open. Snow stretched in every direction, smooth and white, glittering under the dim early morning light. A thin stream ran through the scene, its water flowing softly over rounded stones. There were no birds, no wind. Just quiet. From the freezing stream, Julian dragged himself out.His arms trembled as he pulled his soaked body onto the snow-covered bank, coughing up icy water that had filled his lungs during the fall. He lay flat on the ground, gasping, every breath cutting like knives in his throat. His skin was pale like paper, dark circles shaded his eyes, and the wound on his side had opened again, dripping blood that melted tiny red dots into the snow. His clothes clung to him, soaked. Only the strap across his shoulder reminded him that his supply bag was still with him… though it too was soaked and half-frozen. The cold was worse than before, plus the fact that he was weak to cold made his condition worse. Julian stared up at the moon, still faintl
A close step toward growth
Julian stood still for a moment, breath misting in the icy night air, staring at the dozens of arrows aimed directly at him. The tips glinted under the pale moonlight like silver teeth, ready to rip him apart. Behind him, the forest stretched wide and black, a maze of snow laden trees swaying gently in the wind. The cold gnawed at his skin, yet sweat ran down his spine."Well, this is definitely not what I expected," he muttered to himself, a dry, bitter chuckle escaping his lips. "A step closer to death… is just a step closer to growth."He looked up; eyes sharper than they had been moments ago resolved surging despite the pain throbbing in his side. "I choose the wolves."His words made the armed group hesitate. A few of them looked at one another in disbelief. Only Miya didn't flinch. Her smirk stayed, her eyes studying him like he was a puzzle she already knew the answer to."You sure you don't want holes in your body instead of being torn to shreds?" she asked, tilting her head s
Choose your destiny.
The clearing fell silent except for the sound of distant wind and the soft crunch of snow under boots. The cold air bit at Julian's skin, and his breath steamed in the chill like smoke. In front of him, Miya stood at ease, her long black hair swaying lightly in the breeze. Behind her, a small squad of armed teens waited, tense but obedient."How dare you speak to Lady Miya like that?" A girl stepped out from Miya's right; her bow was already drawn tight. Her black and blue hair glimmered slightly under the pale moonlight, and her icy blue eyes locked on Julian with a glare sharp enough to cut steel. "Do you even understand the situation you're in?" "Nina." The name came from Miya, her tone calm but playful. She raised one hand like she was about to scold a child. "Calm down. It's fine. Honestly, I like his confidence."Her eyes turned back to Julian, narrowing ever so slightly as her lips curved into an almost amused smile. "You know," she added casually, "not everyone can take down
Killing spree
"Argh!" Julian's voice cracked through the cave as the wooden stake stabbed into his side. Pain shot up his ribs, but he didn't fall. His hand gripped the sharpened stake instinctively, blood seeping between his fingers as his body stiffened.Marcus didn't hesitate. He grabbed Julian by the collar and yanked hard, his eyes wild, like adrenaline had taken over. Julian's feet left the ground for a second before his back slammed into the stone cave wall with a thud that rattled the campfire embers. Marcus exhaled sharply, forcing a cocky grin. "Well, that was easy," he said, though his voice shook slightly. "Gena, send the signal. Now."Gena, standing near their bags, hesitated for only a moment before rummaging through them. The small orange glow of the campfire danced over her pale face, her expression somewhere between relief and unease. She pulled out a flare gun, its polished metal reflecting the firelight."I really thought we blew our cover back there," Lucas muttered, his laugh
Strange Group
The air inside the cave smelled of pine sap, smoke, and a hint of ash. It was warmer now, thanks to the fire and the stone walls that trapped the heat. The shadows danced along the walls, and outside the cave's mouth, the world was black, except for the occasional glint of moonlight reflecting off untouched snow.Peter, the boy who had been badly injured when they first arrived, leaned against the cave wall, his head supported by Gena as she spoon-fed him water from a wooden cup Julian had carved. He was awake now, pale and groggy, but alive."Thank you again," Marcus said, breaking the quiet. "I mean it. For everything."Julian sat with his legs crossed near the fire, poking at the embers with a stick. "No problem," he replied, though his voice sounded distant. He stared into the flames for a moment longer, thinking. He felt nervous in their presence. He wasn't used to speaking with people outside of his mother, the maids, and a few guards, but he knew those thoughts didn't matter he
Trial Two
The wooden doors of the trial hall slowly opened, drawing everyone’s attention to the center where the chief examiner stood flanked by elite guards wearing dark black jackets, and three-star gold trimmed badges. And the chief examiner has 4 stars, the same as Athena. He was Kyle Raymond. The examiner stepped forward, his voice cutting through the silent hall. "Children of Zoldyck, the second trial begins now. This is a survival test. Seven days and out in the wild. You will be allowed to form your own seven member teams by choice. We will blindfold each of you before moving out. When the cloth comes off... you'll be in the field."His gaze darted across the children. "Our blood runs like steel, skin strong as titanium, and our hearts with cold resolve. Prove that you deserve the name Zoldyck."The guards quickly moved across the hall, distributing black duffle bags filled with essential gear like blankets, rations, a tool kit, a pot, and a survival knife before covering blindfolds ove
