It was obvious that he was one of the few people who knew almost nothing about the wider Wizard World.

Many of the other qualified apprentices came from noble families, and those families clearly had far more knowledge about the academy and its various factions.

Rayn ignored the excitement and walked toward the Puppet Element section of the Combat Element.

A light screen displayed the contract terms clearly.

An apprentice who chose the Puppet Element would have ten years of study. Once ten years had passed, or once the apprentice became a First Level Official Wizard, they would be sent to the battlefield.

During those ten years, all basic and advanced knowledge related to the Puppet Element would be available for free. Each month, the academy would also provide resources worth 100 points.

After entering military service, the apprentice would have to remain on the battlefield for seven years or obtain enough merit to qualify for an early release.

Rayn continued through the other Combat Element sections.

The details varied, but the overall structure remained almost identical. The study period and strength requirements were generally the same, while the main differences were the monthly resources and length of military service.

Most offered between 100 and 150 points of resources each month. Military contracts ranged from five to fifteen years.

Compared with what the academy had promised during recruitment, the terms seemed fairly generous.

Then Rayn looked toward the Logistics Element.

The difference was immediate.

The area was much quieter. There were fewer apprentices, and the instructors hardly bothered to promote their specializations. Whenever someone asked about a contract, the instructor would simply point toward the magical display.

Rayn soon understood why.

The longest study period remained unchanged, but almost everything else was worse.

The Logistics Elements provided only basic knowledge for free. Advanced knowledge had to be exchanged using points. The monthly resource allowance was a miserable ten points.

And the military contract lasted thirty years.

The conditions across the various Logistics Elements were almost identical, with only their names and specific fields being different.

“What a joke, a thirty-year contract term?” an apprentice complained in a low voice, “That’s way too long, just five years for the combat element!”

The difference was enough to push most apprentices toward the Combat Element.

The advertisements above them showed wealth, fame, powerful spells, magical equipment, and successful wizards returning from the frontier. To young apprentices who had just entered the Wizard World, it was almost impossible not to be tempted.

Those with high talent received even more attention.

Rayn’s Sixth Level talent naturally made him one of the instructors’ targets. Several Combat Element mentors had already begun paying attention to him, hoping to convince him to join their specializations.

Rayn, however, was not interested in the excitement around him.

He had experienced an information explosion in his previous life. Compared with the flashy advertisements and carefully selected success stories, he knew better than to believe everything placed in front of him.

More importantly, the possibility of becoming an experimental subject had never left his mind.

That caution allowed him to notice something everyone else seemed to overlook.

“Ninety-seven Wizards returning from the combat element… Strange, why such a number?” Rayn frowned deeply.

The returning wizards were easy to identify.

They carried an aura that could only come from surviving actual battles. The academy had gathered them together on the temporary stage, placing them in full view of the apprentices as living proof of the Combat Element’s success.

Yet the Logistics Element had returning wizards too.

They were not being used to promote anything, but most of them had also gathered in one area. From time to time, they exchanged amused looks with the Combat Element wizards, as though they were enjoying some private joke.

That made Rayn even more suspicious.

These returning wizards had probably been assigned a task to assist with the recruitment event. If so, their number should have been easy to arrange.

Why ninety-seven?

If the academy wanted to display a group of returning wizards for promotional purposes, wouldn’t a neat number such as one hundred make more sense?

This was Skyrim Academy, an institution famous for its strict rules and obsession with knowledge. Something as simple as the number of returning wizards should not have been left looking incomplete without a reason.

Rayn lowered his gaze as two possibilities came to mind.

“Two possibilities. In the Wizard World, due to some special Wizard rule or numerical symbol, ninety-seven is indeed a ‘complete number.’ And two…”

His expression gradually became grim.

“…They don’t have the capability to round up to a hundred.”

For a moment, Rayn said nothing.

What did it mean to lack the capability?

The answer was obvious.

Everyone else was dead.

These ninety-seven returning wizards might not have been chosen because they were the best examples of successful graduates. They might simply be the survivors.

The apprentices around him were still excitedly discussing their choices. Some were arguing about which Combat Element offered the best future. Others were trying to catch the attention of mentors who might recommend them.

Rayn no longer cared about any of that.

If his suspicion was correct, then the academy’s glowing advertisements were showing only one side of the story.

These ninety-seven people had been sent to the battlefield, survived countless fights, endured the academy’s selection process, and somehow made it back alive.

The question was no longer which major offered the greatest glory.

Rayn’s question was much simpler.

How many people had gone there with them, and how many had never returned?

“Hello! New Alchemy Element apprentice, right? Me too!”Rayn frowned briefly before returning to a calm expression. He looked up to find a young girl beside his desk. She had curly brown hair, a bright smile, and lively eyes.“Hello.” Rayn responded, while discreetly assessing her.Her clothes were simple but clean and neat. She looked a little tired, probably because she had also failed the Basic Meditation Method several times, yet her face still carried plenty of energy. Rayn examined the fluctuations of her Spiritual Power. Fifth Level Talent. That was above average among the apprentices he had assessed.“Judging by your badge, it’s the cauldron symbol of the Alchemy Element! Great, finally met someone from the same batch!” The girl dropped into the empty seat across from him.Her tray was piled high with food, showing that she had quite an appetite.“My name is Lily! Lily Ashford!” She Introduced herself, then blinked and extended her hand, “What’s your name? Sitting here alone l

“According to the usual recovery speed for a Sixth Level Talent… I need to rest for an hour now.” Rayn calculated in his mind.Rest was necessary, but Rayn still had plenty to do. He glanced around his dorm room, taking in its simple but complete furnishings. His eyes then settled on the “Basic Alchemy Manual” and the box of Alchemy Tools Professor Clark had given him.Since he was supposed to be an ordinary and hardworking Alchemy Apprentice, spending the entire recovery period meditating would not make much sense. Rayn picked up the enrollment manual from the wooden box and began reading it carefully. The handbook explained the academy’s basic structure, course arrangements, points system, public facilities, and various rules that new apprentices needed to know. Among everything inside, one thing caught Rayn’s attention more than the rest: points.Points were practically the currency of the academy. They could be exchanged for advanced knowledge, rare materials, laboratory access, a

After clearing his mind, Rayn sat at the table and examined everything in the box. He had passed the first hurdle, but that did not mean he could afford to become careless.“Although I’ve passed the first hurdle, I still can’t relax my vigilance. I can’t ensure there’s no wizard surveillance in the dormitory, so I must act cautiously. At least for now, I shouldn’t openly engage in anything related to cultivation immortality…”Since cultivation immortality was not an option, he needed another path. Clark had given him only ten days, so his first goal was obvious. He had to master the most basic method of the wizard system, the “Basic Meditation Method.”There was another reason he could not waste those ten days. He still knew too little about this world, and revealing abilities that did not belong to a normal wizard apprentice would only attract unwanted attention. For now, learning enough to pass the test while keeping his true strength hidden was the safest choice.Only after kindlin

Rayn scanned the Scroll. Its contents resembled the light screen from the Alchemy academy’s promotional display, though the Scroll was more detailed.During the apprentice period, the academy’s Alchemy Workshop would provide accommodation, systematic knowledge teaching, and limited experimental resources.Apprentices had to complete academy learning tasks and workshop chores to earn credits, which could be exchanged for advanced knowledge and resources. The main obligation was clear. After reaching the rank of a First Level Official Wizard or completing ten years of study, an apprentice had to serve the workshop on the frontline for thirty full years.During those years, they had to follow the workshop’s arrangements and handle assignments such as refining Magic Potions, repairing equipment, and assisting with research.Breaking the contract came at an awful price. A breach could demand enormous compensation in Points and resources, or damage the Soul’s Origin and reduce Spiritual Pow

After bidding farewell to the few wizards he had spoken with, Rayn turned back toward the empty logistics element area. The unfamiliar names offered little clue about where he should begin. He could tell that the moment he turned away, the mentors who had acted indifferent toward him all paid attention to him. The illusionary barrier might have been enough to block ordinary apprentices, but it was clearly useless against these mentors, whose strength was far beyond what Rayn could understand.Still, he had already boarded this pirate ship, so regretting his choice would accomplish nothing. He had to make a decision and continue forward. As he looked through the familiar and unfamiliar names, Rayn felt a strange tension in his scalp.“It’s quite like the aesthetic of a high school graduate choosing their college major.”He walked through the logistics element area, considering his situation.“Although unwilling, since I’ve already joined the academy, it’s likely impossible to leave for

Wizard Kane’s words struck Rayn like a bolt of lightning, forcing him to see the truth hidden beneath the academy’s polished promotions. In only five years, more than 5,000 people had entered the academy, yet only 153 had survived. These were not ordinary recruits sent into battle as disposable soldiers. They were legitimate wizards who had already endured ten years of professional training. The impressive returnees displayed by the academy were simply the rare few who had survived and advanced. Their success stories were used to draw in more inexperienced youths, who would then become the next batch of cannon fodder.A chill ran through Rayn. The Wizard World was far more brutal than he had imagined. The Wizard Academy was not simply a place where young people studied magic. It was part of a huge war machine, constantly supplying new “fuel” for the battles beyond their world. The thirty-year contract was not merely a restriction placed on apprentices. With such a terrifying death rat
