[Unknown Archive Entity detected.]

[Level: 11.]

[Compatible Evolution detected.]

Damon looked at the ceiling.

THUMP.

Dust fell onto his shoulders.

The thing upstairs moved again.

THUMP.

One of the light fixtures tore loose and crashed beside the dead Monster Hunter.

Damon didn’t move.

Level 11.

He was Level 3.

The Ironclaw Hunter had been Level 6 and nearly broken his ribs.

Whatever was above him was almost twice that.

The system apparently considered this an opportunity.

Damon considered it attempted murder.

“Identify.”

[Target obstructed.]

[Partial identification available.]

[Species: Unknown.]

[Mutation Tier: II.]

[Level: 11.]

[Threat Evaluation: High.]

[Compatible Evolution detected.]

Not enough.

Damon looked around the abandoned headquarters.

Broken armor.

Old weapons.

Dead soldiers.

A ruined world that had spent thirty-one years learning how to kill these things.

He smiled slightly.

He didn’t need to be stronger than the monster.

He just needed to borrow thirty-one years of other people’s mistakes.

Another step shook the ceiling.

Damon backed away from the stairwell.

The creature was somewhere above the lobby.

He could hear claws dragging across concrete.

Predatory Reflex separated each sound automatically.

Weight distribution.

Movement speed.

Distance.

Heavy.

Slow compared to an Ironclaw.

Probably large.

That was useful.

Damon turned toward the dead Monster Hunter.

The corpse’s sword was still lying beside it.

He grabbed the handle.

[Monster Hunter Blade.]

[Grade: C.]

[Condition: 31%.]

[Core functions unavailable.]

[Physical integrity sufficient for limited combat.]

Better than Elias’s training sword.

Damon picked it up.

The weapon was heavier than expected, but balanced well enough that he could use it.

He left his brother’s sword beside the corpse.

“I’ll come back.”

A roar came from upstairs.

The staircase cracked.

Damon reconsidered.

“Probably.”

He ran.

The Survival District had been built to resist monsters.

That meant weapons had to be somewhere.

The headquarters lobby connected to three corridors.

Damon chose the one marked:

TACTICAL RESPONSE.

He moved quickly.

Not recklessly.

Predatory Reflex kept part of his attention behind him.

The creature upstairs stopped moving.

Damon noticed immediately.

Silence.

Then—

CRASH.

The ceiling behind him exploded.

Concrete filled the corridor.

Damon threw himself forward.

Something landed where he had been standing.

The impact shook the building.

Damon rolled.

Turned.

And saw it.

The creature had once been an Ironclaw.

Probably.

That resemblance ended at the torso.

It stood nearly three meters tall.

Its front limbs had thickened until they resembled armored pillars. Black metallic plates overlapped across its shoulders, skull and spine.

Its vertical mouth had split farther down the chest.

Six eyes glowed red.

Two additional arms grew from beneath its ribs.

Shorter.

Thinner.

Each ended in a blade of bone.

Identify completed.

[Ironclaw Reaver.]

[Level: 11.]

[Mutation Tier: II.]

[Classification: Siege Predator.]

[Traits:]

[Reinforced Carapace.]

[Impact Adaptation.]

[Accelerated Muscle Response.]

[Unknown.]

[Compatible Evolution detected.]

Damon stared at Accelerated Muscle Response.

There.

His third evolution.

The Reaver charged.

Damon ran.

Its first step cracked the floor.

Second.

Third.

Fast.

Much faster than its size suggested.

Damon reached the end of the corridor as one claw swept behind him.

He ducked.

The wall exploded.

Fragments struck his back.

Damon kept moving.

He reached a steel door.

TACTICAL ARMORY.

Locked.

“Identify.”

[Reinforced Security Door.]

[Electronic lock.]

[Emergency manual release located: Interior.]

Damon stared at it.

“Very helpful.”

The Reaver roared.

He turned.

Thirty meters.

No time.

Damon searched the walls.

Electrical box.

Fire suppressant.

Emergency controls.

Nothing.

Then his eyes landed on a small access panel beside the door.

Identify.

[Maintenance Interface.]

[Backup mechanical access possible.]

Damon drove his knife under the panel.

Pulled.

Metal tore open.

Wires.

A mechanical cable.

He cut it.

Nothing.

The Reaver closed half the distance.

Damon grabbed another cable.

Pulled.

CLUNK.

The door opened ten centimeters.

Damon shoved his fingers beneath it.

Lifted.

His ribs screamed.

Twenty centimeters.

Thirty.

Enough.

He dropped to the floor and slid underneath.

The Reaver reached him.

A claw punched through the gap.

Damon rolled away.

The steel door bent inward.

Once.

Twice.

The frame groaned.

Damon looked around.

Weapon racks.

Empty.

“Of course.”

Most of the firearms were gone.

A few broken rifles remained.

Armor.

Ammunition crates.

Grenades?

He crossed the room.

[Fragmentation Grenade.]

[Condition: Unstable.]

“No.”

Next.

[Arc Grenade.]

[Condition: Functional.]

Damon stopped.

Blue crystal core.

Metal shell.

He picked it up.

[Arc Grenade.]

[Hybrid Arcane Weapon.]

[Effective against low-to-mid Tier II mutations.]

[Activation: Twist upper ring. Impact or 4-second delay.]

Damon smiled.

The door tore in half.

The Reaver pushed through.

Damon twisted the ring.

Four seconds.

He threw.

The grenade struck the creature’s chest.

One.

The Reaver looked down.

Two.

It swatted the grenade away.

Three.

“Oh.”

The grenade bounced back toward Damon.

Four.

Damon dove behind a storage locker.

BOOM.

Blue-white light filled the armory.

The shockwave crushed air from his lungs.

Metal screamed.

Something massive hit the far wall.

Damon waited.

His ears rang.

Smoke covered the room.

Identify cut through it.

[Ironclaw Reaver.]

[Level: 11.]

[Condition: Injured.]

Not dead.

Damon stood.

The Reaver rose.

Half the armor on its chest had shattered.

Black blood ran between exposed muscle.

Its two smaller arms were gone.

The creature screamed.

The sound vibrated through Damon’s bones.

“Good.”

He had its attention.

Now he needed to leave.

The Reaver charged.

Damon ran through the opposite exit.

The Survival District outside was open enough to maneuver.

Barracks to the left.

Vehicle depot ahead.

Watchtower.

Wall.

Damon’s eyes swept over everything.

He needed something bigger than a grenade.

Then he saw the armored transport.

It sat thirty meters away.

Six wheels.

Plated front.

Mounted weapon on top.

Identify.

[Hound-Class Siege Transport.]

[Condition: Nonfunctional.]

[Main weapon: Mana Bolt Cannon.]

[Power Core: Depleted.]

Damon nearly cursed.

Then:

[Auxiliary emergency charge: 6%.]

He stopped.

Six percent.

Maybe one shot.

Maybe none.

The Reaver smashed through the headquarters doors behind him.

Damon ran toward the transport.

The creature followed.

He climbed through an open side hatch.

The interior smelled like dust and old metal.

Controls covered the front cabin.

Nothing looked familiar.

Damon activated Identify.

Panels lit one after another.

[Steering.]

[Engine ignition.]

[Weapon control.]

[Emergency auxiliary system.]

That was almost unfair.

Almost.

The Reaver rammed the transport.

Damon slammed against the console.

The entire vehicle rocked.

“Emergency auxiliary.”

A switch highlighted.

He hit it.

[Auxiliary charge activated.]

[Remaining charge: 6%.]

[Systems available:]

[Internal lighting.]

[Communications.]

[Primary Weapon — Single Discharge.]

“Primary weapon.”

[Warning.]

[Mana Bolt Cannon requires targeting calibration.]

[Calibration unavailable.]

“Manual.”

[Manual targeting enabled.]

The Reaver climbed onto the transport.

Metal bent overhead.

Damon grabbed the weapon controls.

A targeting reticle appeared across the cracked windshield.

The cannon could rotate.

Slowly.

Too slowly.

The Reaver’s claw punched through the roof.

Damon moved before it entered.

Predatory Reflex.

He ducked.

The claw passed over his head.

Damon pulled the targeting control.

The cannon turned.

Twenty degrees.

Thirty.

The Reaver ripped open more of the roof.

Damon could see its face.

Forty.

The creature’s mouth opened.

Fifty.

Damon needed sixty.

The Reaver plunged one arm inside.

Damon jumped into the rear compartment.

The claw followed.

It missed his chest by centimeters.

Sixty.

The targeting marker turned red.

[Target acquired.]

Damon pressed the trigger.

Nothing happened.

His eyes widened.

[Safety lock active.]

“You have got to be kidding me.”

The Reaver tore the roof away.

Damon searched the interface.

Safety.

Safety.

There.

A small red lever beneath the console.

The monster dropped into the transport.

Damon pulled the lever.

[Safety disengaged.]

The Reaver lunged.

Damon fired.

The world became blue.

A beam of compressed mana exploded from the cannon at almost point-blank range.

It hit the Reaver through the chest.

The creature disappeared from Damon’s vision.

The recoil lifted one side of the transport off the ground.

Glass shattered.

Damon crashed into the rear wall.

The vehicle came down.

Silence.

Then something heavy hit the road outside.

Damon stayed where he was.

One second.

Two.

His ears were ringing again.

He crawled toward the hatch.

The Reaver lay twenty meters away.

A hole the size of Damon’s head had been burned completely through its torso.

Its legs twitched.

Still alive.

“Seriously?”

Damon climbed out.

The Reaver tried to stand.

Couldn’t.

Its six eyes found him.

Damon walked toward it with the Monster Hunter Blade.

No rush.

No dramatic speech.

He had almost died several times in the last five minutes.

He was tired.

His side hurt.

His shoulder hurt.

He simply wanted the thing dead.

The Reaver lifted one claw.

Damon moved around it.

Predatory Reflex showed him the weak rhythm immediately.

Too much damage.

Slower response.

No balance.

He stepped onto its arm.

The creature snapped at him.

Damon drove the sword into the damaged cavity in its chest.

The blade entered.

The Reaver convulsed.

Damon pushed deeper.

Its claws scraped the pavement.

Then stopped.

[Archive Target eliminated.]

[Experience acquired.]

[Level 3 → Level 4.]

[Level 4 → Level 5.]

Damon blinked.

Two levels.

The next message appeared immediately.

[High-level target eliminated.]

[Bonus Archive Experience awarded.]

His muscles tightened.

A rush of heat spread through his body.

The pain in his ribs lessened slightly.

Not healed.

But his body felt stronger.

He opened his status.

[Name: Damon Cross.]

[Level: 5.]

[Combat Path: Archivist.]

[Rank: F.]

[Strength: 17.]

[Agility: 19.]

[Endurance: 18.]

[Mana: 5.]

That was a considerable increase from this morning.

And still not the reason he had taken the fight.

Gold light began rising from the Reaver.

Damon watched.

[REMNANT DETECTED.]

Three options appeared.

[Accelerated Muscle Response]

[Reinforced Carapace]

[Impact Adaptation]

He selected the first.

Details unfolded.

[Accelerated Muscle Response.]

[Neuromuscular Evolution.]

[Optimizes signal transmission between nervous system and major muscle groups.]

[Effects:]

[Movement initiation speed increased.]

[Explosive acceleration increased.]

[Neuromuscular delay reduced.]

Damon smiled.

That paired extremely well with Predatory Reflex.

Seeing an attack earlier was useful.

Moving earlier was better.

“Take it.”

[Selection confirmed.]

The Remnant entered his body.

This one hurt.

His muscles seized.

Damon dropped to one knee.

His spine arched.

Every muscle in his arms and legs contracted simultaneously.

Heat tore through him.

Then—

release.

He sucked in air.

His hands trembled.

His heartbeat sounded violently loud.

Damon slowly stood.

He moved his fingers.

Fast.

He took one step.

His body responded almost before he consciously finished deciding to move.

[Accelerated Muscle Response acquired.]

[Archive Evolutions:]

[Predatory Reflex — Tier I.]

[Low-Light Vision — Tier I.]

[Accelerated Muscle Response — Tier I.]

A new message appeared.

[Monster Hunter requirement satisfied.]

Damon stopped.

The world around him darkened.

Blue lines filled his vision.

The same branching structure he had seen over the dead Hunter reappeared.

Only now the first node was glowing.

[EVOLUTION PATH:]

[MONSTER HUNTER.]

[Stage I available.]

[Activate?]

“Yes.”

The reaction was immediate.

[Three compatible Evolutions detected.]

[Constructing evolutionary framework.]

Predatory Reflex.

Low-Light Vision.

Accelerated Muscle Response.

Three separate entries connected.

Lines formed between them.

His body heated again.

But this was different.

Organized.

Intentional.

The system was no longer simply adding individual mutations.

It was making them work together.

[Neurological synchronization complete.]

[Muscular synchronization complete.]

[Sensory synchronization complete.]

[Archive adaptation in progress...]

Damon clenched his fists.

His hearing sharpened.

His vision adjusted.

His breathing changed.

His stance shifted without instruction.

Small corrections.

Weight slightly forward.

Shoulders relaxed.

Center of gravity lower.

A posture built for hunting something stronger than himself.

Then the notification changed.

[MONSTER HUNTER — STAGE I ACQUIRED.]

[New Effects:]

[Archive monster damage +10%.]

[Threat Analysis unlocked.]

[Mutation Resistance +5%.]

[Compatible Remnant detection range increased.]

[New Function unlocked:]

[HUNT.]

Damon focused on the last line.

[HUNT.]

[Designate one Archive species as prey.]

[While hunting designated prey:]

[Tracking efficiency increased.]

[Behavioral analysis increased.]

[Weak-point reconstruction accelerated.]

Damon stared.

Now that was a combat ability.

Not a sword strike.

Not a fireball.

Something potentially much more useful.

He looked at the dead Reaver.

“Hunt Ironclaws.”

[Species designated.]

[IRONCLAW.]

Immediately, information surfaced.

[Known Ironclaw variations recorded:]

[Ironclaw.]

[Ironclaw Hunter.]

[Ironclaw Reaver.]

[Recorded specimens: 6.]

[Estimated species data completion: 8.2%.]

Damon’s expression changed.

Eight percent.

He had barely seen anything.

Which meant there were many more variants.

He glanced back toward the headquarters.

The dead Monster Hunter.

The equipment.

The records.

This place had survived for decades.

If he could reconstruct the entire path—

Damon stopped.

A new notification had appeared.

Not blue.

Not gold.

Red.

[WARNING.]

[Monster Hunter Evolution detected by local Archive.]

“What does that mean?”

The system did not answer immediately.

Then:

[Predator hierarchy recalculating.]

Damon looked toward the city.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then something roared.

Far away.

Deep enough that the sound rolled across the entire Survival District.

Another answered.

Then another.

One from the north.

One west.

One somewhere beyond the wall.

Predatory Reflex reacted automatically.

Every hair on Damon’s arms rose.

The system completed its message.

[You have been recognized as an active predator.]

[Archive ecosystem response initiated.]

Damon stared at the ruined skyline.

“That sounds bad.”

[Correct.]

He blinked.

“That was rhetorical.”

Another roar shook the distance.

Then the ground vibrated.

Damon looked toward the Survival District gates.

Shapes were moving beyond them.

Several.

Large ones.

His status displayed automatically.

[Current Archive Session remaining:]

[01:57:14.]

Damon froze.

“Session?”

The countdown continued.

01:57:13.

01:57:12.

A second message appeared.

[Exit becomes available upon completion of first Evolution Stage.]

Damon stared at it.

Then smiled.

Finally.

“Open exit.”

[Exit available.]

A black doorway began forming ten meters away.

Home.

Damon took one step toward it.

Then stopped.

The Monster Hunter headquarters was behind him.

A dead civilization’s technology surrounded him.

He still had nearly two hours.

And somewhere inside that headquarters was the equipment belonging to the man whose Evolution Path he had just inherited.

Damon looked at the portal.

Then at the building.

The smart choice was obvious.

Go home.

Heal.

Return later.

Damon turned away from the exit.

“One hour.”

The portal remained open.

“I loot everything useful for one hour.”

A roar sounded closer.

Damon tightened his grip around the Monster Hunter Blade.

“Then I go home.”

The system displayed one final message.

[HUNT target approaching.]

[IRONCLAW.]

[Estimated Level: 14.]

Damon stared toward the gate.

He reconsidered.

“Thirty minutes.”

Damon did not reply to the message. Not immediately. He remained outside Vanguard Exchange with his phone in one hand, watching Hunters and merchants move along the crowded street while the words stayed on the screen. They can smell them from the other side.Vanguard Exchange occupied one of the larger buildings in the Westbridge Hunter Market, a commercial district that stretched across several blocks beneath the elevated transit line. Monster-processing shops, equipment stores, guild offices and appraisal centers filled nearly every storefront.Normally, Damon would have paid more attention to the place.Right now, the anonymous message mattered more. The most obvious interpretation was that carrying Mutation Cores between worlds attracted Ironclaws. That might explain why Archive #0001 had reacted so aggressively after he unlocked Monster Hunter Stage I, but it did not explain how someone in his own world knew about it.More importantly, the sender had known the Archive number. Not

Someone else had brought something back.Damon studied the image on Freya Hart’s tablet again. The object was a black crystal veined with dull red light, roughly the size of a walnut. At first glance, it looked almost identical to the Mutation Cores stored inside his Adaptive Field Coat.Almost.The difference was small enough that most people would have ignored it, but Damon had spent hours handling Ironclaw remains inside Archive #0001. His cores had irregular red channels branching outward from the center.
