Chapter 1 — My F-Rank Class Sent Me to a Dead World
Damon Cross had spent six years preparing to kill monsters.Apparently, the universe wanted him to organize their paperwork instead. The crystal in front of him went dark. For three seconds, nobody inside Hall Seven said anything. Then blue letters appeared above the Awakening Platform.[Awakening Complete.][Combat Path: Archivist.][Rank: F.][Combat Skills: None.]Someone in the crowd laughed.Damon stared at the words.Archivist.He had heard of the Path.Everyone had.Archivists worked in guild warehouses, museums, dungeon recovery teams, and auction houses. They catalogued monster remains, identified old equipment, recorded magical artifacts, and occasionally translated inscriptions if their Path evolved far enough.Useful.Safe.Boring.More importantly, not something anyone trained six years to receive.Examiner Halloran cleared his throat. The old man stood beside the Awakening Crystal with the careful expression of someone about to explain to a dog that its owner had died.“

Chapter 2 — Everyone in This World Was Already Dead
The creature moved first.Fast.Much faster than something shaped like that had any right to be.It burst from beneath the overturned bus on four limbs, claws tearing sparks from the pavement as it crossed the distance between them.Damon stepped sideways. Not backward.Backward was where people fell. The creature lunged. He pivoted off his left foot and swung Elias’s training sword with both hands.CLANG.The blade struck the side of its skull.Pain shot through Damon’s wrists. The monster barely moved. It turned.Damon got his first proper look at it.Roughly the size of a large dog.Maybe larger. Its body was covered in patches of dark gray hide that looked almost metallic beneath the moonlight. Its front limbs were disproportionately long, ending in three hooked claws. No fur.No visible ears. Its mouth opened vertically rather than horizontally.Four rows of short teeth unfolded inside.Damon stared at it.“That’s unpleasant.”The creature screamed.A wet, metallic sound. Then th

Chapter 3 — I Stole an Evolution That Doesn't Exist Yet
Damon stared at the three options floating above the corpse.[Iron Tendons][Predatory Reflex][Claw Technique]His shoulder was bleeding. His ribs hurt every time he breathed.Something somewhere outside the ruined store had just screamed. And somehow the system expected him to make a shopping decision.“Details.”The words changed.[Iron Tendons][Biological Evolution.][Reinforces tendons and connective tissue using the Ironclaw’s mutation pattern.][Effects:][Physical strain tolerance increased.][Explosive movement efficiency increased.][Resistance to tendon damage increased.]Damon’s eyes narrowed.Useful.Very useful. He shifted to the second option.[Predatory Reflex][Neurological Evolution.][Integrates portions of the Ironclaw Hunter’s sensory-response architecture.][Effects:][Reaction speed increased.][Threat recognition increased.][Predatory movement patterns partially integrated.]That sounded significantly better. The third appeared.[Claw Technique][Combat Impri

Chapter 4 — I Hunted Something Four Times My Level
[Unknown Archive Entity detected.][Level: 11.][Compatible Evolution detected.]Damon looked at the ceiling.THUMP.Dust fell onto his shoulders. The thing upstairs moved again.THUMP.One of the light fixtures tore loose and crashed beside the dead Monster Hunter.Damon didn’t move.Level 11.He was Level 3.The Ironclaw Hunter had been Level 6 and nearly broken his ribs.Whatever was above him was almost twice that. The system apparently considered this an opportunity.Damon considered it attempted murder.“Identify.”[Target obstructed.][Partial identification available.][Species: Unknown.][Mutation Tier: II.][Level: 11.][Threat Evaluation: High.][Compatible Evolution detected.]Not enough.Damon looked around the abandoned headquarters.Broken armor.Old weapons.Dead soldiers.A ruined world that had spent thirty-one years learning how to kill these things. He smiled slightly. He didn’t need to be stronger than the monster. He just needed to borrow thirty-one years of othe

Chapter 5 — The Dead World Had Better Gear Than Mine
[HUNT target approaching.][IRONCLAW.][Estimated Level: 14.]Damon stared toward the entrance of the Survival District. The sensible part of his brain immediately revised the schedule.“Twenty minutes.”The system offered no opinion. The distant roar came again.Closer.Damon turned and ran toward the headquarters. He had just defeated a Level 11 by firing a siege cannon into its chest.Trying the same thing against a Level 14 immediately afterward would cross the line between confidence and volunteering for natural selection.Monster Hunter Stage I made him better at fighting Ironclaws. It did not make him immortal.Yet.He entered the headquarters through the shattered lobby. The dead Monster Hunter remained where Damon had left him.His brother’s training sword lay beside the corpse.Damon picked it up first. Then he examined the black armor covering the dead man.[Monster Hunter Combat Armor.][Grade: C.][Condition: 22%.][Integrated Functions:][Impact Distribution.][Minor Mut

Chapter 6 — My F-Rank Class Broke the Testing Machine
Damon had four hours before his assessment. He spent the first twenty minutes trying to decide whether the dead world had ruined his ability to sleep. Then he gave up.There were worse problems to have.He stood in front of the bathroom mirror and removed the bandage from his shoulder. The claw wound looked better than it should. Not healed. But the swelling had already gone down.Damon touched the edge carefully.[Injury detected.][Severity: Minor.][Estimated natural recovery: 3–4 days.][Monster Hunter Stage I:][Minor recovery efficiency increase detected.]That was new.He opened his status.[Name: Damon Cross.][Level: 5.][Combat Path: Archivist.][Rank: F.][Strength: 17.][Agility: 19.][Endurance: 18.][Mana: 5.][Archive Evolution Path:][Monster Hunter — Stage I.][Archive Evolutions:][Predatory Reflex — Tier I.][Low-Light Vision — Tier I.][Accelerated Muscle Response — Tier I.]Yesterday morning, his highest attribute had been fourteen. Now Agility was nineteen. That

Chapter 7 — The Guild Offered Me $30,000 for One Corpse
Someone else had brought something back.Damon studied the image on Freya Hart’s tablet again. The object was a black crystal veined with dull red light, roughly the size of a walnut. At first glance, it looked almost identical to the Mutation Cores stored inside his Adaptive Field Coat.Almost.The difference was small enough that most people would have ignored it, but Damon had spent hours handling Ironclaw remains inside Archive #0001. His cores had irregular red channels branching outward from the center. The one in Freya’s image showed three thicker lines spiraling around each other.“Can I see it closer?”Freya raised an eyebrow. “You just said you’ve never seen one.”“I haven’t.”“Then why do you want a closer look?”“Because you’re asking me about it.”“That isn’t an answer.”“It’s the one you’re getting.”Marcus stood beside Damon looking far too entertained by the conversation.Freya watched Damon for another moment before enlarging the image. He focused on the core, but Ide

Chapter 8 — The A-Rank Genius Wanted My Secret
Damon did not reply to the message. Not immediately. He remained outside Vanguard Exchange with his phone in one hand, watching Hunters and merchants move along the crowded street while the words stayed on the screen. They can smell them from the other side.Vanguard Exchange occupied one of the larger buildings in the Westbridge Hunter Market, a commercial district that stretched across several blocks beneath the elevated transit line. Monster-processing shops, equipment stores, guild offices and appraisal centers filled nearly every storefront.Normally, Damon would have paid more attention to the place.Right now, the anonymous message mattered more. The most obvious interpretation was that carrying Mutation Cores between worlds attracted Ironclaws. That might explain why Archive #0001 had reacted so aggressively after he unlocked Monster Hunter Stage I, but it did not explain how someone in his own world knew about it.More importantly, the sender had known the Archive number. Not
