The warehouse floor erupted in a shower of sparks as Ren’s clawed hand collided with Kael’s glowing blade. The force sent a tremor through the concrete, but Ren didn’t wait to see if the parry held. He threw his weight backward, kicking off the support pillar to launch himself toward the rusted hatch of a maintenance shaft.

"Get back here, you little scavenger!" Kael roared, his voice losing its icy composure. "You think you can just crawl into the bowels of this city and hide?"

"Eat dirt, metal-head!" Ren shouted, his voice cracking with the strain of the shifting bones in his throat. "I’m not a dog, and I’m definitely not your target practice!"

"You're a corpse in waiting!" Kael lunged, but Ren had already vanished into the darkness of the sewer grate, pulling the heavy iron cover shut with a metallic clang that echoed like a funeral bell.

Ren tumbled down a steep, sludge-slicked slide, his body colliding with refuse and stagnant water. He hit the bottom hard, the impact jolting his spine. His vision was a chaotic mess of scrolling red code.

[ System Alert: Biological failure imminent. Heart rate: 220 BPM. Temperature: 104°F. ]

"Ugh, this is… this is miserable," Ren groaned, pushing himself up against a slime-covered brick wall. "I feel like I’ve been run over by a mag-lev train."

He clutched his chest. His heart wasn't beating; it was thumping like a drum made of lead. Every breath felt like inhaling shards of glass.

"Hey, System," Ren wheezed, his eyes darting through the darkness. "Why is my skin burning? It feels like acid."

[ Mutation in progress. Host requires high-density biomass to stabilize cellular reconstruction. ]

"Biomass? You mean food?" Ren coughed, wiping black bile from his lips. "I haven't had a meal in two days, let alone whatever you're talking about. Is this it? Am I just going to melt into a puddle of goo?"

A skittering sound echoed from the dark pipe ahead. Something large, wet, and heavy hit the water nearby.

"What was that?" Ren whispered, his muscles tensing instinctively. "Sounds like something big is playing tag with me."

The shadows in the tunnel parted to reveal a mutated vermin, a rat the size of a mountain dog, its fur matted with radioactive grime, its eyes glowing with a dull, hungry yellow light. It hissed, baring teeth that looked like serrated shivs.

"Great," Ren muttered, his voice trembling with a mixture of fear and that familiar, gnawing hunger. "A giant rat. This is definitely a new low for my career."

"You lookin' at me?" Ren taunted, his voice dropping into that gutteral, dangerous register. "I’ve got a guy with a sword chasing me, and a god-blood fever burning a hole in my gut. You’re really not the biggest threat on my list right now."

The rat lunged. Ren didn't think. He didn't deliberate. He stepped into the motion, his hand blurring forward. He caught the creature by the throat, his talons sinking deep into its thick, grimy neck.

"Not today, furball," Ren hissed.

He didn't just kill it; he felt the life force, the 'biomass' the system demanded, draining into him. It was a sickening, cold rush, like drinking ice water after a marathon.

[ +15 Essence Absorbed. Evolution Progress: 8%. ]

[ Warning: Caloric deficit remains high. More consumption required. ]

"More? You want more?" Ren dropped the carcass, his chest heaving. "Fine. If this is what I need to stay alive, then I’m going to be the hungriest thing in these sewers."

He sprinted forward, his movements no longer clumsy. He was fast, unnervingly fast. He felt the shadows wrapping around his limbs, sensing his intent.

"Is this part of the mutation?" Ren asked, staring at his hands. "It feels like I’m moving through smoke."

[ Skill Unlocked: Shadow Step. Requires 10% Essence. Consuming 2% current progress to activate. ]

"Wait, I lose progress to move?" Ren grunted, dodging a second, even larger rat that leaped from the rafters. He vanished, literally flickered out of existence, and reappeared behind the creature in a haze of dark energy.

He slashed downward, the sound of tearing flesh filling the tunnel.

"Too easy," Ren breathed, wiping the black ichor from his forehead. "I’m actually getting the hang of this. It’s almost... fun."

"Don't get cocky," he whispered to himself, his voice sounding more like an echo in the confined space. "You're still a courier. You're still just a guy trying to make rent."

He leaned against the wet bricks, his body cooling down. The burning sensation in his veins was fading, replaced by a steady, powerful hum.

[ Level Up: Demon Bloodline: 10%. ]

[ Skill: Shadow Step (Active) - Level 1. ]

"Ten percent," Ren noted, a grim satisfaction crossing his face. "I wonder what happens at twenty. Do I get wings? Or do I just turn into a giant bat and fly out of this dump?"

He walked deeper into the tunnel, the darkness feeling less like an obstacle and more like an ally. He could hear the drip of water, the scuttling of insects, and the heavy, rhythmic thud of something far above him.

Wait. He stopped. The sound from above wasn't just distant traffic. It was the synchronized marching of armored boots.

"Voices?" Ren tilted his head, his ears twitching.

Above, through a ventilation grate, he heard a voice, cold, clinical, and amplified by a comms unit.

"Sector 4 is compromised," the voice barked. "The target is confirmed as a Class-A anomaly. Initiate the lockdown. If it moves, erase it."

Ren looked up, his jaw set in a hard, jagged line.

"Lockdown?" Ren muttered. "They’re not just looking for a courier anymore. They’re looking for a monster."

"And if they want a monster," Ren whispered, his golden eyes igniting in the dark, "I suppose I’ll have to give them one."

He began to climb the ladder toward the surface, his shadow stretching out behind him, transforming into something wide, jagged, and terrifying. The System screen shimmered one last time, turning a deep, predatory crimson.

[ Quest Update: Survive the Purge. ]

[ Difficulty: Extreme. ]*

Ren reached the top of the ladder and gripped the cold steel of the manhole cover. He could hear them now—the hum of military drones, the heavy roar of APC engines, and the unmistakable, rhythmic clicking of Kael’s blade somewhere in the distance.

"Hey, Kael," Ren whispered into the stillness of the sewer, a manic, sharp-toothed grin spreading across his face. "You want a show? I hope you brought a ticket."

He pushed the cover upward. A sliver of moonlight sliced through the darkness, illuminating his face. It wasn't the face of a courier anymore. It was something older. Something hungry.

"Let’s see how many of them I can drag back down here before the sun comes up."

He heaved the manhole cover aside, the sound clattering loudly in the quiet, empty street. Silence descended for a heartbeat, then the sky erupted with the searchlights of a dozen descending hunter-drones.

Ren didn't hesitate. He stepped out of the shadows, his claws unsheathed, and looked directly into the glare of the nearest searchlight.

"Your turn," he muttered.

Behind him, the sewer hatch began to glow with a sickly, violet light. And in the distance, a familiar, cold voice cut through the air.

"Found you, little dog."

Ren turned, his eyes burning gold. "Bring it on."

It’s an anomaly. It doesn't belong.""It belongs to the city just as much as you do," Ren laughed, a jagged, broken sound. "You're not the only one with secrets, metal-head."Before Kael could recover, a series of high-pitched thuds rippled through the street.
