The heavy iron manhole cover slammed against the asphalt with a deafening, metallic shriek that seemed to tear through the midnight silence. Ren lunged upward, his boots skidding on the soot-covered street as the searchlights of three descending drones converged on his position, turning the alley into a blinding stage of white-hot light.
"Hey! Over here, you flying tin cans!" Ren shouted, his voice vibrating with a newfound, metallic resonance. "Come and get your dose of reality!"
The drones didn’t respond with words. Instead, they unleashed a barrage of suppressive fire. Bullets chewed into the concrete, sending shrapnel whistling past Ren’s ears.
"Woah! Easy on the lead, boys!" Ren vaulted behind a rusted dumpster, his movements unnervingly fluid. "I just got these pants, you know?"
"Target acquired," a cold, synthesized voice crackled from the drones above. "Authorization: Exterminate on sight."
"Exterminate this," Ren muttered, checking his hands. The veins beneath his skin glowed with a faint, violet luminescence.
Suddenly, a massive, furred shape dropped from a fire escape above, landing with a bone-shaking thud between Ren and the drones. It was a beast, eight feet tall, with matted gray fur and muscles that shifted like coiled steel. Its eyes, burning with a feral, yellow rage, locked onto the drone nearest to it.
"Well, look at you," Ren laughed, peering over the edge of the dumpster. "You’re a bit far from the zoo, aren't you, giant puppy?"
The werewolf didn't look at Ren. It tore through the drone’s chassis with a single swipe of its massive claws, metal shrieking as it folded like paper.
"What the hell is that thing?" one of the unseen soldiers shouted over a loudspeaker. "The beast is interfering with the sweep! Ignore the courier, focus on the werewolf!"
"Great," Ren sighed, clutching his side. "The big dog gets the attention and I get ignored. My ego is truly bruised."
The werewolf turned, its snout dripping with hydraulic fluid and gore. It let out a roar that shook the windows of the surrounding buildings.
"Hey, fuzzy!" Ren called out, stepping out from behind the dumpster. "You’re blocking my exit strategy. Do you mind moving your oversized tail, or are we going to have a problem?"
The werewolf’s ears twitched. It snapped its head toward Ren, its nostrils flaring as it caught a scent on the wind. The creature’s aggression shifted instantly, replaced by a deep, rumbling growl of confusion.
"You smell it, don't you?" Ren asked, his heart hammering against his ribs. "That little bit of royalty you’re sniffing? It’s not a perfume, buddy. It’s a death sentence."
"What are you?" the werewolf rasped, its voice a jarring, guttural mimicry of human speech.
"I'm the guy having the worst night of his life," Ren replied, pacing back and forth, his claws extended and pulsing with dark energy. "Are you going to move, or do I have to make you?"
The werewolf let out a wet, mocking laugh. "A hybrid? A stinking, pathetic half-breed running around with stolen blood? You’re a disgrace to the ancient ones."
"Yeah, yeah, heard it all before," Ren scoffed, rolling his eyes. "Give me a new insult. The 'half-breed' line is getting really stale."
The werewolf lunged, a blur of grey fur and killing intent. Ren didn't move until the last possible millisecond.
"Shadow Step," Ren whispered.
He flickered, his body dissolving into wisps of dark smoke. The werewolf’s claws raked through empty air, tearing a gaping hole in the brick wall behind where Ren had been standing. Ren reappeared ten feet away, perched atop a discarded crate.
"Missed me!" Ren cheered, though his breath was coming in sharp, shallow gasps. "Maybe you need those eyes checked. Or maybe you’re just getting old?"
"You think you’re fast?" The werewolf lunged again, turning in mid-air. "You’re a flea on the back of a storm, boy!"
Ren barely rolled out of the way, the wolf’s massive paw smashing the crate into splinters. "Flea? Wow, that's almost creative. Keep going, maybe we'll get to a 'parasite' by the time you're tired."
"I will tear that blood from your throat!" the werewolf roared, its body vibrating with raw, untamed power.
"Good luck finding it," Ren retorted, backflipping over a pile of trash. "I'm still using it, and I'm not really in the mood to share."
The surrounding area was a war zone. More drones descended, their lasers painting the street in rhythmic red pulses. The werewolf ignored them, its focus entirely on the hybrid.
"Why run?" the werewolf snarled, pinning Ren against a barricade. "You feel the heat, don't you? The blood is eating you. You are nothing but a vessel for a legacy you aren't worthy of."
"Maybe," Ren panted, looking into those cold, predatory eyes. "But at least I'm not a lapdog for the government. What are you, anyway? A failed experiment or just a lackey with a bad grooming habit?"
"I am the alpha of this territory!" the wolf growled, leaning in until its hot, wet breath washed over Ren’s face.
"Congrats on the title," Ren whispered, his golden eyes igniting with a lethal, focused light. "I hope the dental plan is good, because you’re about to lose a few teeth."
Ren gripped the wolf’s fur, his talons digging in. "Shadow Step, again."
He didn't just teleport; he shifted the momentum. As they vanished into the smoke, Ren slammed into the wolf’s flank, dragging them both through the darkness and into a narrow, debris-filled alleyway. They hit the ground hard, rolling through broken glass and oil.
Ren kicked the beast back, standing up and wiping his mouth. "You're heavy for a puppy."
The werewolf scrambled to its feet, shaking its fur out. It seemed to pause, its nose twitching violently as it looked Ren up and down. The aggression, so palpable seconds ago, suddenly drained away, replaced by an overwhelming, trembling shock.
The massive beast staggered, its knees hitting the pavement with a heavy, final thud. It bowed its head, its heavy chest heaving with deep, ragged breaths.
"What's this?" Ren stepped back, his claws retracted slightly, his face etched with confusion. "Giving up already? I thought we were having fun."
The werewolf looked up, its yellow eyes wide, filled with an ancient, terrified reverence that made the hair on the back of Ren’s neck stand up.
"The royal scent..." the wolf whimpered, his voice sounding small and broken. "It's not just a drop. It's the entire lineage... the blood of the Sun-King in a common street-rat's body."
Ren frowned, his voice dropping to a harsh, skeptical whisper. "Royal blood? Are you high? I’m a courier, you lunatic. I deliver packages. I don't wear crowns."
The werewolf ignored him, bowing its massive head lower until its nose almost touched the grimy floor. "My lord... the prophecy... the false king said you were dead. He said the blood was extinguished."
"Listen, man, or wolf, or whatever," Ren snapped, his patience fraying. "I told you, I'm just Ren. I’m nobody. You’re confused. Go take a nap or something."
The wolf didn't move, its body shivering violently. It let out a sound that was half-growl, half-sob. "Royal blood? No... you're just a filthy hybrid!"
The wolf snapped its head up, its eyes flashing with a renewed, sudden, and terrifying malice. "Which means you're an impostor. And you have to die for the deception!"
Ren gripped his fists, his shadow elongating until it looked like a monstrous, winged nightmare rising from the ground behind him. "Change your mind fast, didn't you? Make up your mind, puppy. Am I your king or your target?"
The wolf didn't answer. It let out a shriek that drowned out the sound of the approaching sirens. It lunged, its jaws wide, teeth bared, aimed directly at Ren’s throat.
Ren stood his ground, the crimson screen in his vision flashing [ Threat Level: Fatal. ] and [ Warning: Evolving core detected. ]
"Fine," Ren whispered, his grin widening until it looked like a jagged, blood-stained blade. "Let's see who's still standing when the sun comes up."
As the wolf’s jaws clamped down toward him, Ren felt his heart stop, replaced by a cold, dark thrum that turned the very air around him into ice. He didn't blink. He didn't retreat. He waited for the final, violent impact.

The screech of metal on metal died away, leaving only the sound of heavy, labored breathing. Ren didn't let go of the blade. He watched as the massive, winged shadow cast by the gargoyle atop the nearby cathedral shifted, its eyes burning like twin searchlights. Kael’s blade hissed, heating up until it glowed white, but Ren’s hand remained steady, his skin absorbing the thermal energy into his own surging reserves."You really want to keep doing this, Kael?" Ren spat, his voice vibrating with the strain. "The air is getting thin. You hear that?"Kael yanked the blade back, stumbling, his tactical goggles cracked. "Shut up. That thing above us. It’s an anomaly. It doesn't belong.""It belongs to the city just as much as you do," Ren laughed, a jagged, broken sound. "You're not the only one with secrets, metal-head."Before Kael could recover, a series of high-pitched thuds rippled through the street. They weren't the hunched, snarling wolves or the cold-blooded drones he had faced all night. These women moved with a grace that felt hypnotic, draped in silks that shimmered with an iridescent, sickly violet hue."You’ve certainly made a mess of things, haven't you?" the lead witch spoke, her voice sounding like a chorus of chimes. She stepped into the moonlight, her skin pale as parchment.Ren didn't lower his guard. He curled his lips, showing teeth that had sharpened into jagged blades. "Who are you?
