The red moon hung like a jagged, bleeding wound in the sky as the first wave of hunters surged forward. Ren didn’t think; he reacted. His body moved with a predatory fluidness that felt alien yet intoxicatingly natural. He swung his arm, his claws carving through the air, shearing through the lead monster’s armored carapace as if it were parchment.

"Is that all you’ve got? Seriously?" Ren laughed, his voice a jagged, guttural rasp.

"Die, you hybrid freak!" the second monster screeched, lunging with a dual-bladed staff.

Ren pivoted, the asphalt cracking beneath his feet. "Hybrid, huh? Sounds like a crappy car model."

He caught the staff mid-swing, the impact vibrating through his bones. He didn’t feel pain, only a searing rush of heat. With a sharp twist of his wrist, he shattered the weapon and drove his knee into the creature’s midsection.

"Too slow. You’re all just… too slow."

He ripped the creature’s chest open in a spray of sparking, viscous fluid. The system screen flooded his vision with golden text: [ +5 Essence Absorbed. Evolution Progress: 3% ].

Before he could savor the power, a high-pitched frequency pierced the air. A shockwave of pure silver light erupted from the mouth of the alley. Ren was thrown backward, skidding across the grime-stained concrete until he hit a brick wall.

The light faded to reveal a man standing at the entrance. He wore a long, charcoal-colored duster coat, his face obscured by a high-collared scarf and tactical goggles. He held a custom-made silver rail-pistol with the casual grace of a man who had killed thousands.

"Well, well," the stranger drawled, his voice cold and clipped. "Look at what the street dragged in. A fresh fledgling with a royal bloodline stuck in his veins."

Ren groaned, pulling himself up. His ribs, which had been pulverized, were already knitting themselves back together with an audible, wet clicking sound. "Hey, watch where you point that thing, pal. It’s rude."

"Rude?" The man—Kael—stepped forward, his boots clicking sharply on the glass-strewn floor. "I’m here to clean up the mess. You’re a walking contamination, boy. You smell like a rotting corpse and a god at the same time. It’s sickening."

"You talk too much," Ren spat, wiping dark, metallic-tasting blood from his lip. "You a cop? Or just another weirdo who likes hanging out in dumpsters at midnight?"

"I’m the one who ends your little temper tantrum," Kael replied, his eyes narrowing behind his goggles. He leveled the pistol. "My name is Kael, and I hunt things that don't know how to stay dead. You’re going to be a very brief entry in my report."

"You want to take a shot? Go ahead," Ren goaded, though his mind raced. What is this guy? He’s not like those shadow things. He’s... precise.

"I don't need a shot," Kael whispered. He pulled a serrated blade from his coat, the metal pulsing with a faint blue luminescence. "I prefer the personal touch."

Kael closed the distance in a blur, faster than anything Ren had fought yet. The blade hissed through the air, carving a line across Ren’s shoulder. Ren shouted in surprise, his instinct overriding his panic. He ducked, swinging a wild, desperate fist that caught only thin air.

"Too frantic," Kael remarked, ducking under Ren’s arm and slicing the back of his leg. "You’ve got the power of a king, but the grace of a stray dog. It’s honestly embarrassing to watch."

Ren stumbled, his leg twitching as it began to heal. "Yeah? Well, this dog bites back!"

Ren lashed out with his claws, but Kael parried with his blade, the clash sending sparks showering onto the damp ground. The force of the impact forced Ren to his knees.

"You’re using the blood, but you aren’t commanding it," Kael said, standing over him with his blade poised for a final strike. "You’re just letting it burn you from the inside. Do you have any idea what happens when that fire hits your brain?"

"I don't care," Ren grunted, sweat, or perhaps something thicker, dripping down his brow. "I’m surviving. That’s all that matters to me."

"Surviving?" Kael chuckled, a dry, humorless sound. "You’re not surviving. You’re transitioning. By sunrise, you’ll either be a mindless beast or a pile of ash. Which one would you prefer, kid?"

"How about neither?" Ren snarled.

He didn't wait for a counterattack. He threw his bag at Kael’s face, not caring that it contained his few belongings. As Kael batted the bag aside with a flick of his blade, Ren dropped into the shadows, his hands finding purchase on the rusted fire escape ladder.

"Get back here!" Kael shouted, his voice dropping an octave, losing its composure. "You can’t run from the blood! It’s in your marrow!"

Ren scrambled up the metal rungs, his fingers leaving deep, jagged gouges in the iron. He reached the ventilation duct and shoved the rusted grating aside, crawling into the narrow, dark tunnel.

"Catch me if you can, fashion victim!" Ren yelled back, his voice echoing in the confined space.

He crawled until his lungs burned, his senses picking up the frantic vibrations of Kael’s pursuit behind him. He reached an abandoned, cavernous warehouse and dropped down, his body hitting the concrete with a heavy thud.

The warehouse was silent, save for the rhythmic dripping of a leaky pipe. Ren stood in the center of the dark expanse, his breath ragged.

[ System Alert: Adrenaline output dropping. Internal cooldown initiated. ]

"Great," Ren whispered to the empty, echoing space. "Just great. Now I’m a monster in a warehouse with no coffee and a guy with a fancy knife trying to turn me into a kebab."

He leaned against a rusted support pillar, his hands trembling. He looked at them, his fingernails were still long, dark talons, and the veins in his forearms pulsed with a faint, violet light.

"Is this it?" he asked the darkness. "Is this who I am now?"

He felt the hunger again, gnawing at his stomach, a void that seemed to reach into his soul. It wasn't hunger for a sandwich. It was a hunger for power, for the life force of anything that dared to breathe nearby.

"Don't do it," he muttered to himself, clenching his fists until they bled. "Stay human, Ren. Just… just breathe."

He closed his eyes, trying to focus on his old life, the smell of cheap synthetic coffee, the sound of his courier bike, the hum of the city. But the system chime cut through his thoughts like a razor.

[ System Alert: Hostile presence detected. Proximity: 10 meters. ]

Ren’s eyes snapped open. The massive steel doors of the warehouse groaned as they began to slide open, revealing the silhouette of Kael standing against the dim light of the city.

Kael walked in, his boots echoing with terrifying calm. He stopped twenty feet away, his silver blade catching the moonlight. He wiped a smudge of black blood from his cheek with his thumb, his gaze fixated on Ren with a mixture of pity and predatory intent.

"You really thought a ventilation shaft would keep you safe?" Kael asked, his voice low and dangerous. "I’ve hunted things that could turn into smoke, things that could bend light, and things that could stop time. A scared boy in a courier’s jacket is hardly a challenge."

Ren backed up until he hit the far wall, his back scraping against the brick. "Why me? Why are you obsessed with me?"

Kael tilted his head, his smirk hidden by the scarf. He stepped closer, his posture relaxed but ready to strike.

"You think you’re special?" Kael chuckled. "The blood you stole… it didn't just come from any refugee. You drank from the last of the Lineage. You aren't just a mutant, Ren. You’re a beacon."

"A beacon for what?" Ren gasped, his heart hammering against his ribs.

"For the things that have been waiting in the dark for a millennium," Kael replied, raising his blade until the tip touched Ren’s throat. "The King has finally returned to the city, but let’s be honest… he’s nothing more than a stray dog waiting to be put down."

Ren felt his pulse spike, his golden eyes glowing in the darkness. The system notification flashed red, screaming in his vision.

[ Warning: Threat level critical. ]

Ren’s teeth elongated, his lips pulling back in a feral snarl as the urge to lash out overwhelmed his conscience.

"Let's see if this dog bites," Ren whispered, lunging forward just as Kael’s blade began its downward arc.
