The sharp, golden chime echoed through Ethan's mind with the clarity of a church bell, cutting right through the heavy, freezing fog clouding his brain. As his body temperature plunged toward a lethal low, the intense agony in his fingers suddenly vanished, replaced by a strange, tingling warmth that spread outward from his chest.

[HOST DESPAIR THRESHOLD REACHED.]

[ABSOLUTE SURVIVAL SYSTEM ENGAGED. WOULD YOU LIKE TO CLAIM THE NEWBIE STARTER PACK?]

Ethan didn't hesitate. With whatever little cognitive strength he had left, he mentally shouted his affirmation. Claim it! Claim everything!

[DING! NEWBIE STARTER PACK SUCCESSFULLY CLAIMED!]

Passive Skill Unlocked: Absolute Thermal Equilibrium (Immune to all environmental temperatures between -100°C and +100°C; body maintains a constant, comfortable 36.5°C regardless of external conditions).

Consumable Item: Steaming Pork Buns (x5) and Pure Mountain Spring Water (x5).

Special Utility Tool: Target Detection Radar (Level 1).

Whoosh.

A sudden wave of divine heat surged through Ethan’s veins. The frost encrusted on his bare arms instantly evaporated into a light mist. The shivering stopped entirely. The biting,

razor-sharp wind of the -50°C stairwell felt no more invasive than a gentle autumn breeze. Ethan pushed himself up from the icy concrete floor, taking a deep, steady breath of air that felt refreshingly cool inside his lungs.

He looked down at his hands. The pale, blue tint was gone, replaced by a healthy, vibrant color. His physical fatigue had been completely wiped clean, leaving him feeling stronger and more alert than he had ever felt in his entire life.

"The system... it's real."

Ethan whispered, his eyes widening in sheer disbelief.

Before he could test the limits of his new thermal immunity, a soft blue holographic interface flickered into existence right before his eyes, displaying a glowing minimap of the high-rise tower. A pulsing red dot blinked furiously on the floor directly beneath him.

[DING! TARGET DETECTION RADAR ACTIVATED!]

[High-Value Target Detected nearby!]

[Location: Apartment 2602 (Floor 26 — 9 floors below).]

[Target Profile: Sarah Miller, age 22. Profession: Senior Nursing Student. Condition: Severe Hypothermia / Unconscious. Potential: Grade-S (Medical & Perception Specialist).]

[System Instruction: The Host may approach the target and offer protection to establish a Survival Bond. Binding targets unlocks advanced resources, spatial storage, and elemental affinity skills.]

Ethan’s brow furrowed slightly as he stared at the holographic minimap. Floor 26. That was Sarah Miller’s apartment,a quiet, hardworking nursing student who had lived down the hall from him during his college years. If she was suffering from severe hypothermia down there, she couldn't survive another hour without active heat.

More importantly, the System made its rules crystal clear: survival in this frozen hellscape wasn't just about hoarding resources; it required building a faction by gaining the genuine consent and willingness of high-value targets to follow him. He couldn't force anyone; they had to choose to stand by his side.

"Let's go see how she's holding up.”

 Ethan murmured to himself.

He turned and walked down the emergency stairwell, his footsteps echoing softly in the dark concrete shaft. Thanks to his Absolute Thermal Equilibrium, the descent through the sub-zero mid-levels was effortless. When he reached the twenty-sixth floor, he stepped out into the frosted hallway.

Apartment 2602 had its heavy wooden door locked tight, but the gaps around the frame were sealed with duct tape and old towels to keep the freezing draft out. Ethan walked up and knocked firmly on the wood.

"Hello? Is anyone in there?"

Ethan called out, keeping his voice calm.

There was no answer, only a faint, weak rustling sound from deep inside the apartment.

Ethan frowned. He pulled out one of the physical items provided in his Starter Pack,a heavy iron pry bar he had picked up from an open utility closet on the floor below.

Channeling a fraction of his newfound physical vitality, he jammed the tip of the crowbar into the door frame and gave it a sharp heave.

CRACK!

The wooden latch splintered instantly, and the door swung wide open.

A wave of bitter, stagnant cold air rushed out to meet him, but Ethan stepped right past it into the dim apartment. The living room was pitch black, lit only by the faint, pale moonlight reflecting off the thick layers of snow piled against the exterior windows.

Moving quickly, Ethan followed the radar ping down a short hallway and pushed open the bedroom door.

Curled up on a bare mattress under three heavy winter coats and a stack of blankets was Sarah Miller. Her face was deathly pale, her lips were chapped and tinged with blue, and her breathing was dangerously shallow and erratic.

She was shivering violently, her body caught in the final, agonizing stages of severe hypothermia.

Ethan rushed to her side, dropping to one knee. He gently placed a warm hand against her icy forehead.

"Sarah? Can you hear me?"

Ethan asked softly.

Sarah’s eyelids fluttered weakly. She managed to open her eyes just a fraction, staring up at Ethan with a hazy, uncomprehending gaze. Her teeth clicked together as she tried to speak.

"C-Cold... so cold..."

She whispered, her voice barely a breath.

"Who... who are you...?"

"My name is Ethan."

He said gently, ensuring his tone was steady and reassuring.

"I live upstairs. The building's heating is gone, but I have a way to keep us warm. I can save your life, Sarah, but I need to know, are you willing to trust me and follow my lead?"

Sarah stared at him, too weak to process his strange lack of winter gear, but feeling the natural, soothing warmth radiating from his hand against her skin. Desperate for any salvation in the freezing dark, she gave a microscopic nod against the pillow.

"I... I trust you... please..."

She breathed out.

[DING! CONSENT OBTAINED! HIGH-VALUE TARGET SURVIVAL BOND REQUEST INITIATED!]

[Would the Host like to officially bind Sarah Miller as a Survival Companion?]

Ethan smiled softly, watching the shivering nurse before him.

 "Accept bond."

The low, guttural roar of heavy diesel engines rattled the frosted glass frames of the depot courtyard as two massive, iron-plated tread-crawlers smashed through the outer perimeter security gates. Snow and ice sprayed into the air as the vehicles ground to a halt, blocking the main entrance and sealing the courtyard into a closed kill-zone.Over thirty heavily armed mercenaries clad in dark, insulated fur coats and reinforced steel body armor spilled out from the armored transports, spreading out across the snow-covered pavement with automatic shotguns and heavy assault rifles.Standing on the hood of the lead tread-crawler was Commander Vance, a brutal, scarred lieutenant of Warlord Boris who shared no blood relation to Ethan, despite his name. He carried a heavy anti-tank rocket launcher slung over his shoulder, his gray eyes scanning the quiet, snow-dusted courtyard with sadistic pleasure.Behind the lead crawler, crouching near the smashed iron gates, were Marcus Vance, Laura Ste

  • Chapter 9: The Armory and the Intercepted Trap

The heavy hydraulic blast doors groaned as they slid fully into the concrete walls, revealing the expansive subterranean fortress beneath the Northport Military Supply Depot. Unlike the frozen wasteland above, the underground air here was still and preserved, held in a state of suspended animation by reinforced blast shielding and emergency battery banks.Row upon row of heavy steel weapons racks stretched into the dim shadows of the main storage bay. Standard-issue automatic assault rifles, high-caliber sniper systems, crates of armor-piercing ammunition, anti-material rocket launchers, and tactical armor vests lined the walls in immaculate condition. Parked along the far wall were three massive, heavy-duty armored snow crawlers equipped with reinforced plow blades and dual-mounted thermal turrets.Corporal Miller and the remaining soldiers gasped, their eyes wide as they stepped down the metal staircase."The entire central tactical reserve is intact." Victoria murmured, walking u

  • Chapter 8: The Subterranean Terror

The concrete courtyard buckled and split like brittle glass as the forty-foot Acid-Frost Serpent reared its massive head into the storm. Its translucent ice scales glistened with a sickly, bioluminescent green, and clouds of acidic, sub-zero vapor hissed as they hit the freezing air. Where the creature’s corrosive saliva dripped onto the ground, armored steel plating dissolved into bubbling slush.Corporal Miller scrambled backward in absolute panic, clawing at the mud as he screamed. "It’s a subterranean threat! The rifles won't do anything! Run!"Victoria’s instincts kicked in instantly. Even with her energy restored by the System bond, the sheer size of the beast made her breath catch. "Ethan, stand back! The green mist is hyper-corrosive,it dissolves physical armor and freezes flesh on contact!""I see it." Ethan replied smoothly, his eyes narrowing as his System vision flared. Thanks to Sarah’s passive Medical Accuracy buff, glowing crimson outlines lit up the serpent’s anatomy

"He's alive! Marcus, kill him! He's come to murder us all!"Laura scrambled backward into the far corner of the room, her hands pressed over her mouth in sheer horror. She stared at Ethan's bare arms, at his complete lack of shivering, and at the flickering amber sparks dancing across his knuckles. The weak, desperate fiancé she had thrown into the stairwell just hours ago was gone, replaced by a cold, imposing figure that terrified her to her core."Ethan...?"
