Chapter 7: A Very Intimate Mana Transfer

The golden lines on the HUD were still shimmering, carving out Daryx’s new territory across the ruins of the city, when the air in the lobby suddenly turned frigid. It wasn't the chill of a broken window or a failing heater; it was a soul-deep vacuum, like the building itself was holding its breath.

[WARNING: SYSTEM CORE INSTABILITY DETECTED.]

[TENANT: MIRELKA SOREVIA IS EXPERIENCING TOTAL MANA DRAIN.]

[PROPERTY INTEGRITY AT RISK.]

"Daryx! Get in here!" Elvara’s scream ripped through the hallway, raw and panicked. "She’s fading! The core is eating her alive!"

Daryx didn't wait. He ignored the fifty-thousand-credit notification and the map of his new empire, sprinting toward the infirmary. He skidded through the door, his boots nearly losing traction on the tile.

Mirelka was arched off the metal table, her back straining as if an invisible hook was pulling her toward the ceiling. The golden glow in her abdomen wasn't pulsing anymore; it was a jagged, frantic strobe light, flickering so fast it hurt to look at. Her skin had gone a translucent, sickly grey, the veins in her neck standing out like black wires.

"What do I do, Elvara? Give me something!" Daryx demanded, his eyes darting between the girl and the dying light in her eyes.

"I can't! Every sedative I try just vaporizes the second it hits her bloodstream!" Elvara was frantically swapping through monitors, her hands shaking. "The core is hungry, Daryx. It ran out of environmental mana, and now it’s harvesting her cellular structure. In three minutes, she’ll be a husk, and this whole building will go up in a mana-burst!"

Daryx stepped closer, the heat coming off Mirelka feeling like a blast furnace. "Mirelka? Can you hear me?"

"C-cold..." she whispered, her teeth chattering so hard a sliver of blood ran down her chin. "So... cold... make it... stop..."

"System! Give me a solution!" Daryx roared at the empty air. "I didn't pay fifty thousand credits to watch my building turn into a crater!"

[Analysis: Vessel requires immediate mana-stabilization.]

[Recommended Action: Utilize Skill 'Landlord’s Grace'.]

[Note: Skill requires physical synchronization to funnel property reserves into the Tenant.]

"Landlord’s Grace?" Daryx's brow furrowed. "I haven't even tested that one yet. What’s the cost?"

[Cost: 500 Credits per second. Risk: Psychic feedback and sensory overload.]

"Five hundred a second? You’re robbing me blind," Daryx growled, but he was already reaching for her. "Elvara, get back. This is going to get messy."

"Daryx, what are you doing?" Elvara asked, backing away as the air began to hum with a low, vibrating bass.

"I’m topping off the tank," Daryx said. He looked down at Mirelka, whose eyes were rolling back into her head. "Hey. Look at me. This is going to feel like a lot of things, but 'cold' won't be one of them. Do you trust me?"

Mirelka’s hand flailed out, catching his wrist. Her grip was weak, her fingers like ice. "Just... don't let... the clicking... get me..."

"The clicking can't get through me," Daryx said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous growl. "System, activate 'Landlord’s Grace'. Target: Mirelka Sorevia. Initiate Mana-Sync."

[Landlord’s Grace activated. Synchronizing...]

Daryx grabbed her other hand, and then, realizing the connection needed to be stronger, he leaned over her, pressing his palms flat against her burning skin, just above the glowing vortex of her stomach.

The world vanished.

A roar of white noise slammed into Daryx’s skull. It wasn't just energy; it was the building. He felt the weight of every brick, the pulse of the water pipes, the hum of the barrier, and the collective heartbeat of every person inside the Blackwood Tenements. He was the anchor, and the building was the ocean.

"Ugh!" Daryx gasped, his knees buckling as he forced the massive river of energy through his own body and into hers.

"Daryx!" Mirelka’s voice didn't come from her mouth; it sounded like it was echoing inside his own brain. "It’s too much! Stop it! I’m going to break!"

"You're not going to break!" Daryx shouted back, sweat pouring down his face, his 'Cold Heart' bonus the only thing keeping his mind from shattering under the pressure. "Hold onto it! Take the energy! Use the building, Mirelka! It’s yours as much as mine!"

"I can't... I’m scared..."

"Don't be scared of the power," Daryx hissed, his face inches from hers. Their eyes locked—his storm-grey against her liquid gold. "Be scared of me. Be scared that if you die, I’m going to charge your estate for the cleaning fees! Now, breathe!"

Mirelka let out a strangled cry, her body slamming back down onto the table. The golden light flared, traveling up her arms and into Daryx’s. The sync was deepening. He could feel her fear, her history, the smell of burnt ozone in the lab where they’d changed her—and beneath it all, a fierce, desperate will to live that matched his own.

"It... it feels warm," she whispered, her breathing finally evening out. "The building... it’s so big, Daryx. I can feel everyone."

"Yeah," Daryx gritted his teeth, his muscles twitching from the sheer voltage. "It’s a lot of responsibility. Now you know why I’m such a jerk about the rent."

"You really are a piece of work," she breathed, a tiny, delirious smile touching her lips. "Even now... you’re thinking about the ledger."

"Someone has to," Daryx said.

The violent thrashing stopped. The air in the room settled, the white noise fading into a soft, melodic hum. But Daryx didn't pull away. He couldn't. The mana-sync had created a vacuum between them, a gravity that held them together. Her skin, which had been burning, was now a soft, radiating heat that felt… addictive.

Mirelka’s hands slid up his arms, her fingers curling into the fabric of his shirt. She pulled him closer, her eyes searching his. The gold in her irises was no longer a storm; it was a calm, molten sea.

"Daryx," she whispered, her voice no longer a rasp, but a soft, intimate confession. "Your heart... it isn't as cold as you think it is."

"It's just a system buff, Mirelka," Daryx said, though his own heart was hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "Don't read too much into it."

"Liar," she murmured. She reached up, her thumb grazing his jawline.

The proximity was electric. The cynicism that had defined both of them for the last forty-eight hours seemed to melt away in the face of the literal soul-bond the system had forced upon them. In a world where everything was rotting, this—this heat, this connection—was the only thing that felt real.

Daryx felt the 'Cold Heart' notification flicker and die. For the first time since the Collapse began, he wasn't calculating credits. He was looking at the woman in his arms, the woman he’d just tethered to his very existence.

"You're a liability," he whispered, his face moving closer to hers until their foreheads touched.

"And you're a slumlord," she countered, her breath warm against his lips. "I think we're even."

The moment stretched, the tension between them thick enough to choke the air. Daryx’s hand shifted, his fingers tangling in her hair, his thumb tracing the line of her cheek. He was about to say something—maybe an insult, maybe a promise—when the room was suddenly bleached white.

"Daryx! What’s happening?!" Elvara shielded her eyes, stumbling back toward the door.

Daryx snapped his head down. The glow in Mirelka’s abdomen hadn't just stabilized; it had evolved. The golden light was no longer contained within her skin. It was erupting outward in a pillar of pure, radiant brilliance that ignored the ceiling, the floors, and the walls.

"Tavrix! Report!" Daryx yelled, finally breaking the sync and standing up, though he felt like his limbs were made of lead.

"Boss! Oh god, Boss!" Tavrix’s voice was a panicked shriek over the intercom. "The sensors are off the charts! We aren't a building anymore! We’re a freaking sun!"

Daryx ran to the window. He looked out at the dark, ruined city.

The Blackwood Tenements was no longer a shadow in the skyline. A beam of golden light, miles high, was shooting straight into the clouds from the center of the building. It illuminated the streets for blocks, turning the night into a terrifying, artificial day.

In the distance, the clicking stopped.

Then, it was replaced by a chorus of thousands of screams—moans, screeches, and the rhythmic thudding of a million feet turning in their direction.

"The core reached its first stage," Mirelka said, her voice trembling as she sat up, her entire body still radiating a soft, golden aura. "It just sent out a beacon."

"A beacon?" Daryx asked, his eyes widening as he saw the horizon start to move.

"It’s telling the world the Vessel is ready," she whispered. "Everyone is coming, Daryx. Not just Marik. Not just the Harbinger. Everything."

Daryx looked at his HUD. His credit balance was plummeting as the building tried to reinforce the barrier against the sheer pressure of the light.

[ALERT: PROPERTY VISIBILITY - 100%.]

[ATTRACTIVENESS RATING: MAXIMUM.]

[CURRENT THREAT LEVEL: APOCALYPTIC.]

Daryx looked at the map of the Downtown District he’d just bought. Every single red dot on the map was now heading straight for the center of his new empire.

"Well," Daryx said, a grim, jagged smile returning to his face as he checked the charge on his new rail-cannon. "I guess I don't need to worry about marketing anymore. The whole world knows where the landlord lives."

He turned to Mirelka, extending a hand to help her off the table.

"Get your boots on, kid," Daryx said. "The first month’s rent is officially due. And it looks like everyone wants to pay at once."

Outside, the first of the shadows hit the barrier, and the sky began to rain fire.

That’s an expensive burp. How many credits did that drain?""About four hundred for the instant stabilization," Tavrix replied. "But look at them, man! They’re just standing there!
