Chapter 6: Property Taxes Are Due
The rail-cannon slug hit the barrier with a sound like a cathedral bell being struck by a freight train. The blue light flared into a blinding, electric white, washing out the lobby and casting long, flickering shadows against the peeling wallpaper.
"Tavrix! Report!" Daryx shouted, shielding his eyes. "Did that thing hold?"
"Holy—! Yeah, it held!" Tavrix’s voice crackled through the intercom, sounding both terrified and ecstatic. "The barrier dropped to 88%, but it’s already recharging. Daryx, they just hit us with enough kinetic energy to level a bunker, and the system basically just burped!"
Daryx lowered his arm, his eyes settling on the HUD. "Eighty-eight percent? That’s an expensive burp. How many credits did that drain?"
"About four hundred for the instant stabilization," Tavrix replied. "But look at them, man! They’re just standing there! I think they expected us to pop like a bubble."
Daryx stepped back to the window, watching the three bikers through the shimmering haze of the barrier. The lead rider, the one the system identified as part of Marik’s unit, lowered the silver rail-cannon. Even through the featureless helmet, Daryx could feel the man’s confusion.
"Hey, pops! You can hear me, right?" A voice boomed from the bikes, amplified by some external speaker. It was smooth, cold, and entirely too calm for the end of the world. "That was a warning shot. We don’t want to damage the interior. Just drop the barrier, hand over the girl, and we might let you keep your life. This building isn't worth dying for."
Daryx leaned against the window frame, a dry smirk touching his lips. "System, open a two-way audio channel to the perimeter. Let’s talk some business."
[Audio link established.]
"You’re Zolven Marik’s boys, right?" Daryx called out, his voice echoing across the empty street. "Listen, I’ll be honest. Your aim is terrible. You hit my fence. Do you have any idea what it costs to get a contractor out here during a zombie apocalypse? The surcharges are insane."
There was a long silence from the bikers. The lead rider tilted his head. "You’re joking. You’re standing in a condemned tenement, facing a rail-cannon, and you’re complaining about the landscaping?"
"I’m a landlord," Daryx said. "Landscaping is a capital expense. Now, you’re currently in a 'No Soliciting' zone. That first shot was free. The next one is going to cost you a lot more than you can afford."
"Kill him," the rider said, his voice dropping the pretense of civility. "Blast the gate. We’ll go in through the hole."
"Daryx, they’re reloading!" Deylor’s voice barked over the comms from the roof. "We’ve got the rifles back, let us take the shot!"
"Negative, Deylor. Save your ammo," Daryx said, his fingers flying across the 'Property Management' tab. "Tavrix, divert all auxiliary power to the internal structural grid. I’m about to do some 'renovations.'"
"Renovations? Now?" Tavrix yelped. "Boss, the barrier—"
"The barrier is just the front door, kid. I’m about to show them the rest of the house."
Outside, the rail-cannon hummed again, a high-pitched whine that vibrated in Daryx’s teeth. But before they could fire, Daryx tapped a glowing red icon on his HUD: [Skill: Labyrinthine Rearrangement (Tier 1)].
"Open the gate, System," Daryx whispered. "Let the guests in."
The blue light of the barrier didn't just flicker—it vanished. The heavy iron gates creaked open, swinging wide with an inviting groan.
"He’s giving up!" one of the scouts yelled. "Move in! Secure the Vessel!"
The three bikes roared to life, kicking up dust and asphalt as they screeched into the courtyard. They didn't even slow down, aiming straight for the lobby’s double doors. They slammed through the wood, wood splinters flying as they skidded into the center of the lobby.
The riders hopped off their bikes, guns drawn, their helmets scanning the room. But Daryx wasn't there. The lobby wasn't even there.
"What the... where did the stairs go?" the lead scout muttered, spinning around.
The door they had just crashed through was gone. In its place was a solid brick wall, looking like it had been there for fifty years. The high-ceilinged lobby had shrunk into a narrow, dimly lit corridor that stretched out into an impossible darkness.
"Hey! Where’d you go, slumlord?" the scout roared, firing a burst from his SMG into the ceiling. "You think some parlor tricks are going to stop us?"
Daryx’s voice drifted down from a hidden vent in the wall. "Parlor tricks? No. This is called 'Optimizing the Floor Plan.' You guys said you wanted to see the interior, right? Welcome to Unit 404. It’s a bit of a walk."
"Split up!" the leader commanded. "Find the exit! This is just a localized illusion!"
The three scouts ran down the corridor. They turned a corner, then another, their boots thudding against the rotted carpet. They reached a door, kicked it open, and froze.
They were back in the same corridor. The same shattered bikes were lying in the middle of the floor. The same bullet holes they had just made were smoking in the ceiling.
"We just ran in a circle," one of the scouts whispered, his voice cracking. "But we didn't turn. We went straight for two hundred yards!"
"It’s a loop," the leader hissed. "He’s folding the space. Marik warned us about high-tier Sanctums. Break the walls! Go through the drywall!"
One scout pulled a frag grenade from his belt, pulled the pin, and threw it at the side wall. They dove for cover.
BOOM.
The dust cleared. The wall was untouched. Not even a smudge of soot marred the wallpaper.
"Maintenance-free walls," Daryx’s voice chuckled over the intercom. "Standard in the 'Indestructible' package. You really should have read the brochure."
"Daryx, this is incredible," Tavrix’s voice whispered in Daryx’s ear. He was watching the feed from the security room, his eyes wide. "They’re literally chasing their own tails. The spatial distortion is holding at 99% efficiency."
"How’s our VIP?" Daryx asked, his eyes never leaving the screen where the scouts were starting to panic.
"I'm right here," Mirelka’s voice came from the doorway behind him.
Daryx turned. She was leaning against the frame, pale and shaking, with Elvara hovering behind her. Mirelka’s golden eyes were fixed on the monitor, watching as one of the scouts began to scream, firing wildly at the empty air.
"You’re... you’re just playing with them," Mirelka whispered, her voice thick with horror. "They can't get out. You’ve trapped them in a box."
"I didn't trap them, Mirelka. They broke into my house," Daryx said, his voice flat. "I’m just ensuring they don't leave without paying the exit f*e."
"They're people, Daryx!" Mirelka stepped forward, clutching her stomach. "They're monsters, yes, but you're... you’re laughing at them."
"I'm not laughing," Daryx said, turning back to the screen. "I’m calculating the overhead. Every minute I keep this loop active, it costs me fifty credits. I’m a businessman, Mirelka. And this business meeting is getting too expensive."
He reached out and tapped the 'Execute' button on the HUD.
In the corridor, the lights flickered and died. A deep, mechanical grinding sound echoed through the walls—the sound of stone and iron shifting.
"What’s that sound?" the lead scout yelled, his flashlight beam darting around. "Stay together! Back to back!"
The walls began to move. Not slowly, but with the sudden, violent force of a hydraulic press. The corridor, which had been ten feet wide, snapped shut to five feet. Then three.
"It’s a trap! Get out! Get—"
The scout’s scream was cut short as the walls slammed together with a wet, sickening crunch. There was no blood on the floor, no mess. The System simply... compressed the space until the entities within it ceased to exist.
[Pest Control complete. 3 Hostile Entities neutralized. 1,500 Credits earned.]
[Scavenging initiated... Items recovered: 3 Tactical Suits, 1 Mk. 4 Rail-Cannon (Damaged), 200 Rounds of SMG Ammo.]
Silence returned to the lobby. The walls shifted back, the corridor vanished, and the room returned to its normal, dusty state. The three bikes remained, dented and abandoned, the only proof that anyone had been there at all.
Mirelka turned away, retching. Elvara stepped toward her, but the girl pushed her away, staring at Daryx like he was a ghost.
"You killed them like they were nothing," she whispered. "You didn't even look them in the eye."
"I looked at their stats," Daryx said, walking toward the bikes to inspect the rail-cannon. "They were Level 12. If I’d played fair, they would have turned this lobby into a slaughterhouse. I don't play fair, Mirelka. I play to win."
"Is that all this is to you? A game? A balance sheet?"
Daryx stopped and looked at her. The cold light of the HUD reflected in his eyes. "Outside those gates, people are being eaten alive. Inside these walls, you’re breathing clean air and your heart is still beating. If the price of that is me being the monster in the walls, then I’ll take that deal every day of the week."
Mirelka didn't answer. She just turned and walked back toward the infirmary, her shoulders slumped.
"Daryx, man... that was intense," Tavrix’s voice came over the speaker, sounding a bit shaken himself. "But uh... you might want to look at the System log. Something just popped up."
Daryx swiped his hand, bringing up the notifications.
[ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED: THE FIRST DEFENSE.]
[Description: Successfully defend your Sanctum against a coordinated assault by a High-Tier Faction.]
[Reward: 50,000 Credits.]
Daryx whistled. "Fifty thousand? Now we’re talking."
But the notifications didn't stop there.
[Bonus Reward: Eminent Domain.]
[Effect: As the first Property Owner to hold a Tier 1 Sanctum against The Order, you have been granted the right to expand your holdings.]
[Special Offer: Purchase 'The Downtown District' (Condemned Status) for 45,000 Credits? (Y/N)]
Daryx stared at the screen. The 'Downtown District' wasn't just a few buildings. it was the heart of the city. The hospitals, the banks, the high-rises—and the main power substation.
"Deylor! Tavrix! Get down here!" Daryx shouted, his voice filled with a new, feverish energy.
"What is it, Boss?" Deylor asked, running into the lobby, his rifle still at the low-ready.
"Pack your bags," Daryx said, a wide, predatory grin spreading across his face as he tapped the 'Yes' button. "We’re moving up in the world. I just bought the neighborhood."
Outside, the heavy, rhythmic clicking of the Harbinger was closer than ever, but Daryx didn't look at the monster. He looked at the golden lines appearing on his map, stretching out block after block, claiming the ruins of the world as his own.
"System," Daryx whispered, his thumb twitching. "Show me the penthouse at the Plaza. I think it’s time for an upgrade."
