Chapter 5: Not Exactly Human
The heavy oak door settled into its frame with a definitive thunk, the sound echoing through the dusty, high-ceilinged lobby. Daryx didn’t waste a second. He adjusted his grip on Mirelka, her body heat radiating through his shirt like a feverish engine.
"Elvara! Get down here! Now!" Daryx roared, his voice bouncing off the soot-stained walls.
"I’m busy with the guy from the basement!" a woman’s voice shouted back from the direction of the old laundry room.
"The guy in the basement is a security guard with a hole in his leg! This girl is a walking power plant!" Daryx started toward the stairs, his boots thudding against the cracked tiles. "Unless you want the building to blow up with all of us in it, get your medical kit to the first-floor suite!"
A door slammed open down the hall. A woman in a stained white lab coat, her dark hair pulled into a messy bun, hurried out. Elvara Neris—the PSF team’s designated medic—looked exhausted, but her eyes sharpened the moment she saw the golden glow pulsing through Mirelka’s combat suit.
"What the hell is that?" Elvara asked, jogging to catch up.
"Our new VIP," Daryx said, kicking open the door to a ground-floor room he’d just designated as the 'Infirmary.' "Clear the table. System, interior lights to 100%."
The room flooded with a sterile, blue-tinted light. Daryx laid Mirelka down on the metal examination table. The glow from her abdomen was rhythmic now, a slow, heavy throb that seemed to sync with the flickering of the overhead lights.
"Daryx, she’s burning up," Elvara muttered, peeling back Mirelka’s gloves to check her pulse. She stopped, her hand hovering just above the girl's wrist. "Wait. Do you hear that?"
"I hear the Harbinger clicking three blocks away," Daryx snapped. "Focus, Elvara."
"No, listen to her chest," Elvara insisted, grabbing her stethoscope and pressing it against Mirelka’s midsection instead of her heart.
Daryx leaned in. He expected the frantic drumbeat of a heart in shock. Instead, he heard a sound that didn't belong in a human body. It was a low, humming vibration, punctuated by a metallic clink every few seconds.
Whirrr-thump. Whirrr-thump.
"That’s not a heartbeat," Daryx whispered.
"It’s a frequency," Elvara said, her face turning pale. She carefully unzipped the top of Mirelka’s combat suit. Underneath, the skin of the girl’s abdomen was translucent, revealing a swirling vortex of liquid gold light. "Daryx... she’s pregnant."
Daryx stared. "With what? A localized sun?"
"I’m serious. Look at the dilation of the tissue. There’s... there’s something growing in there. But it’s not biological. It’s pure System energy. It’s like she’s gestating a core."
"The Bio-Fused Core," Daryx remembered the System's prompt. "The System said she was a vessel. I thought it was just a fancy word for a carrier."
"She’s not just carrying it," Elvara whispered, moving her hands over the glow. "She’s building it. Her body is literally sacrificing its own cells to forge this thing. If this ‘baby’ reaches full term, it’s going to consume her."
"How long do we have?" Daryx asked, his mind already calculating the property value of a living evolution core.
"I don't know! I’m a medic, not a System Engineer!" Elvara turned to her bag, pulling out a sedative. "Her vitals are all over the place. I need to stabilize the mother, or the core is going to go critical before it’s even—"
Suddenly, Mirelka’s hand shot out.
It was a blur. Before Daryx could even activate a System skill, Mirelka had Elvara by the throat with one hand and a serrated combat knife pressed against Daryx’s jugular with the other. Her eyes were wide, the swirling gold iris consuming the whites.
"Don't... touch... it," Mirelka hissed. Her voice was a jagged rasp, dripping with a terrifying, unnatural authority.
"Whoa, easy," Daryx said, freezing in place. He could feel the cold edge of the blade biting into his skin. "You’re in the Blackwood Tenements. You’re safe."
"Safe?" Mirelka laughed, a wet, choking sound. "Nobody is safe. Who are you? Are you with The Order? Did Marik send you to harvest me?"
"I don't know a Marik, and I don't work for any 'Order'," Daryx said, keeping his voice low and steady. "I’m the landlord. You’re currently occupying a premium medical suite, and you haven't paid your deposit yet."
Mirelka’s eyes narrowed, the gold flickering with suspicion. "A landlord? The world is screaming, and you’re talking about rent?"
"The world is changing owners, kid. I’m just getting ahead of the curve." Daryx glanced at Elvara, who was turning a dangerous shade of blue. "Let the medic go. She was trying to stop you from exploding. It’s bad for the upholstery."
Mirelka looked at Elvara, then back at Daryx. She slowly released the medic’s throat, but the knife stayed buried in the air an inch from Daryx’s throat. Elvara collapsed against the wall, gasping and clutching her neck.
"If you're not with The Order, how do you have a Sanctum this strong?" Mirelka demanded, her breathing ragged. "I felt the barrier. It’s Tier 1. Nobody has a Tier 1 barrier on day one unless they’re part of the Architect’s circle."
"I have a good accountant," Daryx lied smoothly. "And I don't like people telling me what to do with my property. Now, put the knife down. That clicking sound outside is a Harbinger coming for your ‘gift.’ If you want to keep it, you need me."
Mirelka’s arm trembled. The glow in her stomach flared, casting long, dancing shadows against the walls. "It’s not a gift. It’s a death sentence. Marik... he’s the one who put it in me. He wants to use it to bridge the gap."
"The gap?"
"The Second Wave," she whispered, her eyes losing focus. "The Harbinger is just a scout. Marik is the one who leads the collectors. He’s coming, and he’ll level this whole block to get his hands on the Vessel."
"He can try," Daryx said, his 'Cold Heart' bonus kicking in, numbing the fear. "But I’ve already invested ten thousand credits into this place. I don't do foreclosures."
Mirelka finally lowered the knife, her strength vanishing as quickly as it had returned. She slumped back onto the table, the gold light in her eyes dimming to a dull amber. "You’re an idiot. You have no idea what’s coming."
"Maybe," Daryx said, turning to Elvara. "Fix her up. Whatever it takes. If she dies, we all die."
"I’m trying!" Elvara coughed, rubbing her neck. "But Daryx, the energy readings... they’re spiking again. It’s like the core is reacting to something outside."
[SYSTEM ALERT: PROXIMITY WARNING.]
The translucent blue HUD flared bright red in Daryx’s vision.
"Daryx!" Tavrix’s voice screamed over the intercom. "We’ve got movement at the North Perimeter! It’s not the Harbinger! It’s humans! Or... I think they’re humans!"
Daryx ran to the window, rubbing the grime away. Down the street, beyond the flickering blue line of the barrier, three sleek, matte-black motorcycles had come to a halt. The riders were dressed in high-tech, reinforced leather, their helmets smooth and featureless.
They weren't attacking. They were just sitting there, watching.
One of them raised a hand, pointing a long, silver device at the building. A beam of red light swept across the brickwork, lingering on the window where Daryx stood.
"Scouts," Mirelka whispered from the table, her voice trembling. "Marik’s hounds. They found the scent."
"System," Daryx growled. "Identify targets."
[Scanning... Entities identified: Zolven Marik’s Forward Recon Unit. Status: Hostile. Level: 12.]
"Level 12?" Daryx's eyes widened. "The highest level I’ve seen so far is that guard Deylor, and he’s a 4."
"They’re The Order’s elite," Mirelka said, trying to sit up. "They don’t use the tutorial. They’ve been preparing for the Collapse for years. Daryx... you have to let me go. If they catch me here, they’ll kill everyone in this building just to make sure I don't escape."
"Let you go? And lose my best asset?" Daryx turned away from the window, a sharp, predatory glint in his eyes. "Not a chance. I just signed you to a long-term lease, Mirelka. And in my house, we don't allow unauthorized visitors."
"Daryx, they’re going to breach!" Tavrix yelled. "The sensor is red! They’re loading some kind of... oh god, is that a rail-cannon?"
Daryx didn't panic. He tapped the HUD, scrolling past the standard defenses to the 'Tenant Management' tab.
"Deylor! Tavrix! Get the PSF guys to the roof!" Daryx commanded into the comms. "Elvara, keep her stable. I’m going to go see if our new neighbors have anything worth scavenging."
"You're going out there?" Elvara asked, horrified.
"I'm going to the gate," Daryx corrected. "I want to see the look on their faces when they realize they're trespassing on a Slumlord's property."
He stepped out of the room, the lobby already buzzing with the sound of the PSF guards scrambling for their positions. The building groaned as the Harbinger’s clicking grew louder in the distance, a massive shadow looming over the skyline.
Between the giant monster and the elite hunters, Daryx Valtaren stood in the center of his crumbling empire, his thumb hovering over the 'Execute Defense' button.
"System," Daryx whispered. "How much for a 'No Soliciting' sign that shoots back?"
[Available Upgrade: Mk. 2 'Caltrop' Landmines (Plasma Infused) - 1,500 Credits. Purchase?]
"Buy three sets," Daryx smirked. "Let’s see how those bikes handle a little bit of property law."
Outside, the first shot from the scouts' rail-cannon slammed into the barrier, the blue light screaming as it absorbed the impact. The war for the Blackwood Tenements had officially begun.

"Did that thing hold?""Holy—! Yeah, it held!" Tavrix’s voice crackled through the intercom, sounding both terrified and ecstatic. "The barrier dropped to 88%, but it’s already recharging. Daryx, they just hit us with enough kinetic energy to level a bunker, and the system basically just burped!"Daryx lowered his arm, his eyes settling on the HUD. "Eighty-eight percent? That’s an expensive burp. How many credits did that drain?""About four hundred for the instant stabilization," Tavrix replied. "But look at them, man! They’re just standing there! I think they expected us to pop like a bubble."Daryx stepped back to the window, watching the three bikers
