Chapter 7: The Gathering Storm

I stood there next to the damaged shelter, my body aching all over from the fight. The metal pipe felt heavy in my hand, and blood from a cut on my arm had dried on my skin. Jaxor lay dead on the ground a few meters away, his axe broken beside him. Lirien wiped her spear clean while watching me with careful eyes. The global announcement still echoed in my head like a warning bell.

[Global Announcement: First regional safe zone cluster forming in the eastern sector. Multiple high-level users converging. The hunt for architect-class bases has begun.]

The words made my stomach drop. Jaxor had been bad enough on his own. Now bigger threats were coming, and they were looking for people like me who could build safe zones. My small truck shelter suddenly felt too exposed and too weak, even after the repairs.

Lirien broke the silence first.

“That announcement changes things,” she said. Her voice was calm but serious. “Hunters like me can hide and move fast. Builders like you become targets. If you want to keep this zone alive, you need to make it stronger fast.”

I nodded slowly. She was right. The core struggle was clear now. It was not only fighting monsters or single destroyers. The real battle was against time and other survivors who saw my class as a prize to steal. I wanted to create a place where my mother and brother could be safe. But every upgrade I made would also paint a bigger target on my back.

The system screen showed the current state of my shelter.

[Safe Zone Status: Level 1 (Damaged)

Durability: 35/200

Current upgrades: Basic Watchtower, Temporary Turret Tower (low energy)]

I had new resources from defeating Jaxor: 60 wood, 45 metal, and 15 energy cores, plus the axe fragment. It was enough to do real repairs and maybe add something better.

“Let me fix this first,” I told Lirien. “Then we can talk about what comes next.”

I placed my hand on the bent front wall and let the system guide the work. Metal pieces straightened and locked together. The armored hide scraps fused in to make the walls thicker. I used 30 wood and 25 metal to rebuild the damaged sections properly. The turret tower got fresh energy cores so it could fire again if needed. Slowly, the shelter started to look solid once more.

[Safe Zone upgraded. Durability restored to 180/200. New structure stability: Medium.]

Lirien watched the process with interest. When I finished, she stepped closer and ran her hand along the reinforced wall.

“Your system is different,” she said. “Most builders I met could only make basic walls. You make things fast and strong. That is why they will come for you.”

I turned to face her. “What about you? Why were you tracking Jaxor?”

She looked away for a moment, her grip tightening on the spear.

“He destroyed my small camp yesterday. I had two other survivors with me. We were trying to find food and a safe place. He came at night, killed them, and took everything. I barely escaped. So I followed his trail. Today I got my chance to finish it.”

Her story hit close to home. We both had people we wanted to protect, and we both lost something because of people like Jaxor. That shared pain made me consider the alliance prompt still waiting on my screen.

I took a deep breath and asked, “The system says we can form a temporary alliance. Would you join me? At least until we both get stronger. I can build better defenses. You can fight and scout.”

Lirien thought for a moment, then gave a small nod.

“I will stay for now. But if you become a burden or try to control me, I walk away. Deal?”

“Deal.”

The system confirmed it right away.

[Temporary Alliance formed with Lirien. Shared vision unlocked. She can see basic safe zone status and contribute resources from her hunts.]

That felt like a small win. For the first time, I was not fighting completely alone.

But the peace did not last long.

A low rumble came from the distance. The ground shook slightly under our feet. The system gave a new alert.

[Multiple high-level signals approaching the eastern sector. Estimated arrival: 15 minutes. Three unknown users detected. Threat levels: Medium to High.]

Lirien’s face tightened. “They heard the announcement too. We need to decide fast. Hide the zone, upgrade it more, or prepare to run.”

I looked at the shelter. Hiding it completely was not possible yet. My architect class let me claim territory, but I needed more time and resources to make it truly hidden or strong enough to defend against a group.

“We upgrade,” I said. “I just got a new blueprint from the level up. Let me see what it can do.”

I opened the list and found the rare one I had earned earlier.

[Basic Turret Tower – already built.

New unlock: Perimeter Wall Segment. Cost: 40 wood, 30 metal, 10 energy cores. Creates a 20-meter reinforced barrier.]

It was perfect for expanding the defense. I chose a spot around the shelter and started the build. Lirien helped by dragging over extra rubble from the street that the system could convert into materials. Together we worked fast. The wall rose section by section, thick and solid, with sharp edges on top to stop climbers.

While we built, I asked her more questions to understand the bigger picture.

“Have you seen other architect users?”

“Only one,” she answered. “He lasted three days before a group hunted him down and took his base. They forced him to upgrade their own zones, then killed him when he was no longer useful.”

Her words made the struggle feel heavier. Building was my strength, but it also made me a target. I had to grow fast enough to protect what I created, or everything would be taken away.

The perimeter wall finished just as the system warned again.

[First approaching user now 800 meters away.]

I climbed the watchtower with Lirien and looked out. In the distance, three figures moved through the ruined streets. One was a big man carrying a heavy hammer. Another moved with quick steps and carried bows. The third stayed in the shadows, harder to see clearly. They were heading straight toward my location.

Lirien pointed with her spear.

“The one with the hammer is probably a warrior class. The archer will be trouble from range. We need a plan.”

My mind raced. We had a stronger shelter now and a new wall, but we were still only two people. If they attacked together, it would be a hard fight. The core of my struggle hit me again. Every upgrade I made brought more danger. Every alliance brought new risks. And my family was still out there, waiting for me to find them.

The system gave one more update.

[New quest available: Defend the Growing Zone. Hold off the incoming group for 20 minutes. Reward: Advanced Blueprint Pack and safe zone expansion token.]

I looked at Lirien. She nodded, ready to fight.

“We hold,” I said. “Together.”

The three figures stopped about two hundred meters away. The big man with the hammer raised his weapon and shouted across the distance.

“Architect! We know what you are. Open your zone and share the build power, or we break in and take it by force.”

His voice carried clear threat. The archer already had an arrow nocked and aimed toward us.

The next wave of conflict was here. My safe zone had survived Jaxor, but now a real group was coming to test it. I tightened my grip on the pipe and prepared for whatever came next, knowing that every choice from here would decide if I could keep building or lose everything I had started.

Chapter 151 The wall of code surged forward like a living tide. Zarek met it head-on. The hammer swung in wide, devastating arcs, shattering tendrils of golden data before they could reach his family. Every impact sent shockwaves through the ruins. Golden light and Overlord energy mixed in violent bursts that lit up the fractured sky. Behind him, Mira fought with brutal efficiency, her wrench smashing through any ghost that slipped past Zarek’s guard. Lira stayed close to her mother, swinging her small golden hammer whenever something got too close. Each time the tiny weapon connected, it flared with Elara’s light and burned through code. Elara floated above them all, small hands raised. She wasn’t attacking directly — instead, she was rewriting sections of the code wall, turning the enemy’s own weapon against them. Where her light touched the golden tendrils, they twisted and dissolved into harmless sparks. The three marked humans watched from behind the wall at first. Then th

Golden blood soaked through the fabric almost as fast as she could replace it. Elara floated beside them, small hands glowing as she tried to help seal the injury with her power. Lira sat a few feet away, hugging her knees, the tiny golden hammer still clutched in one hand. Her eyes kept darting to the bunker entrance like she expected the marked humans to return any second. Zarek’s breathing was steady, but his golden eyes were distant. The mark had gone quiet again after the fight. Too quiet. Mira finished tying the makeshift bandage and sat back on her heels. She studied Zarek’s face — the golden veins, the solid gold eyes, the exhaustion underneath it all. “You almost lost it,” she said quietly. Zarek didn’t deny it. “I saw it,” he admitted. “Joining them. Building with them. You and the girls… rewritten. Safe. Perfect. For
