The alarms were a rhythmic, screeching assault on Darian’s nerves, but the roar of the Archon System in his skull was louder.

"Twenty minutes? Tavia, I need ten just to get through the security perimeter at the Financial Center!" Darian shouted over the din, grabbing his midnight-blue jacket from the back of the chair.

"Then you’d better start sprinting," Tavia hissed, her fingers blurring across the tablet as she tried to patch the bleeding code. "Raka didn't just find a back door; he’s turned the System into a feedback loop. If you don't hit the kill-switch at the main terminal during the conference, this ‘bomb’ doesn't just bankrupt him. It wipes out every server in Oakhaven. We're talking total digital blackout."

Elora stood by the door, her face a mask of pale horror. "The press conference? Darian, you can't go out there. If Raka knows about the System, he's leading you into a slaughterhouse."

Darian paused, his hand on the doorframe. He looked at Elora, the golden light in his eyes flickering like a dying bulb. "He thinks he’s catching a thief, Elora. I’m going to show him he’s facing the new owner of his empire. Caelan, is the motorcade ready?"

"Engine’s screaming, boss," Caelan’s voice crackled through the loft's speakers. "But the police are already redirecting traffic near the plaza. It’s a circus out there."

"Good," Darian said, his voice dropping into that cold, robotic register. "I’ve always liked the circus."

The Oakhaven Financial Center was a monolith of glass and ego, and tonight, every camera lens in the city was pointed at its heart. The grand ballroom was packed with reporters, their whispers creating a low-frequency hum that set Darian’s teeth on edge.

He stepped onto the podium, the bright stage lights blinding for a fraction of a second before the Archon System adjusted his pupils.

[SYSTEM STATUS: CRITICAL STABILITY AT 42%]

[WARNING: NEURAL OVERHEATING DETECTED]

"Ladies and gentlemen," Darian began, his voice projected through the hidden speakers with crystalline clarity. "I apologize for the short notice. My name is Darian Wicandra. Most of you remember me as a ghost, or perhaps a cautionary tale. But today, I’m here to talk about the future."

The room exploded into a frenzy of camera shutters. Darian raised a hand, his expression unreadable.

"As of thirty minutes ago," Darian continued, "Wicandra Holdings has completed a hostile acquisition of fifty-one percent of Wiranusa Energy and its subsidiaries. The 'Eclipse Protocol'—a term many of you have heard whispered in the dark—is no longer a threat. It is now a public asset."

"That’s a lie!"

The heavy oak doors at the back of the hall swung open. Raka Wiranusa marched down the center aisle, flanked by a woman in a sharp grey suit—Selina Arumadewi—and an older woman whose presence made Darian’s heart skip a beat.

Alina Candrawira. His mentor. The woman who had taught him how to see the world in code.

"You’re bold, Darian. I’ll give you that," Raka shouted, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. "But you’re not a CEO. You’re a hacker playing dress-up."

Darian gripped the edges of the podium. "The trades are verified, Raka. Check your own ledger."

"I did," Raka said, reaching the foot of the stage. He looked up at Darian with a smile that was pure venom. "And then I asked myself: how does a man with zero liquid assets and a five-year gap in his history suddenly move billions? Selina, would you like to enlighten the press?"

Selina Arumadewi stepped forward, opening a leather-bound folder. "Mr. Vance—or Wicandra—is utilizing an unlicensed, highly illegal neural-link technology. He isn't trading. He’s manipulating the market through a predictive algorithm that violates every international financial treaty on the books."

The reporters gasped, the air in the room suddenly turning electric.

"You’re reaching, Selina," Darian countered, though his vision began to blur. "Evidence?"

"I am the evidence," Alina Candrawira said, her voice soft but carrying a weight that silenced the room. She stepped into the light, her eyes full of a weary disappointment. "Darian, stop this. I helped you build the foundation of the Archon System because we believed in transparency. But you’ve turned it into a weapon of mass destruction."

"Alina, you don't understand what he’s done to this city," Darian said, his voice cracking.

"I understand that you’re losing yourself!" Alina cried. "The System is glitching, Darian. I can see it in your eyes. You’re not even human anymore; you’re just a host for the code."

Raka climbed the stairs of the stage, stopping inches from Darian. "It’s over. We’ve already contacted the Federal Cyber-Bureau. They’re ten minutes out. Tell them, Alina. Tell them what the Archon really does."

"It’s a parasite," Alina whispered to the cameras. "It doesn't just predict; it forces the outcome. Darian has been 'winning' because he’s been breaking the very foundation of our economy to suit his whims. He’s a fraud using a digital god to settle a personal grudge."

Darian felt a sharp, stabbing pain in his temple. The Archon System roared in protest, the golden HUD in his vision turning a violent, bloody red.

[CRITICAL FAILURE IMMINENT]

[NEURAL GUARD: BROKEN]

[BROADCASTING INTERNAL DATA...]

"Darian, your eyes!" Elora shouted from the side of the stage.

Suddenly, the massive LED screens behind Darian—which were supposed to show the Wiranusa acquisition charts—flickered and died. Then, they snapped back to life, but the images weren't data points.

They were Darian’s thoughts.

A stream of consciousness, formatted in the Archon’s jagged gold script, began to scroll across the screens for the entire room to see.

—I’ll burn them all—

—Raka needs to bleed—

—Elora, I’m sorry I can’t stop—

—Target: Vasantari Logistics. Probability of Ruin: 99%—

The room went deathly silent. Every reporter, every board member, and Elora herself stared at the screens in horror.

"Look at that," Raka laughed, though there was a hint of fear in his eyes. "The machine is talking. It’s showing us who the 'Vengeful Heir' really is."

"Darian, turn it off!" Tavia’s voice screamed in his earpiece. "The feedback is jumping to the local network! You're leaking everything!"

Darian slammed his fist onto the podium, his breathing coming in ragged gasps. "It's... it's not... I'm doing this for Oakhaven!"

—Oakhaven is a corpse— the screen flashed. —I am the maggots—

"You’re a monster," Raka whispered, leaning in so only Darian could hear. "You came back to save the girl, but you ended up becoming the thing she hates most. Look at her, Darian."

Darian turned his head slowly toward Elora. She was backed against the velvet curtains, her hands over her mouth, her eyes wide with a soul-crushing realization. She wasn't looking at Darian; she was looking at the screen that detailed his plan to liquidate her father’s legacy as a "collateral necessity."

"Is that true?" Elora asked, her voice a mere ghost of a sound. "The 99 percent? You were going to destroy my father even after last night?"

"Elora, the System... it's calculating the fastest path to Raka's collapse," Darian tried to explain, but his voice was distorted, overlaid with a digital static. "I didn't... I wouldn't have let it happen."

"But you thought it," she said, a tear finally breaking and tracing a path down her cheek. "The System only projects what's in the driver's head."

The sound of heavy boots echoed from the back of the hall. A dozen officers in tactical gear, marked with the insignia of the Oakhaven Police and the Cyber-Bureau, stormed the ballroom.

"Darian Wicandra! Step away from the terminal!" the lead officer shouted, his sidearm drawn but not yet raised. "You are under arrest for high-level financial terrorism and the use of prohibited neural-tech!"

[SYSTEM ALERT: TOTAL NEURAL COLLAPSE IN 60 SECONDS]

[ERROR: HEART RATE 160 BPM]

[INITIATING EMERGENCY PURGE]

Darian’s knees buckled. He fell against the podium, his hands clawing at his head as the golden light in his eyes began to bleed into the whites. The screens behind him began to strobe in a rhythmic, blinding crimson, the word FAILURE repeating in a thousand different fonts.

Raka stepped back, adjusting his tie with a smug satisfaction. "Take him away. And make sure you get that thing out of his head. I want to see what's left of him when he's just a man again."

The officers rushed the stage. Darian tried to stand, but his limbs felt like lead. He looked at Alina, who had turned her back on him, and then at Raka, who was already talking to Selina about "damage control."

Suddenly, a figure stepped in front of him.

Elora moved between Darian and the advancing officers, her arms outstretched. Her face was a mask of grief, but her eyes were fierce.

"Wait!" she cried. "He’s... he’s sick! You can't just grab him!"

The officers slowed, but didn't stop. "Move aside, Ms. Vasantari. He’s a danger to the city."

Elora didn't move. She turned her head slightly, looking down at Darian as he collapsed to his kneed behind her. The golden light was fading now, replaced by a dull, glazed grey. He looked up at her, his lips trembling, trying to find the words to tell her he was still there, somewhere beneath the code.

But the screens behind them gave one final, violent flicker before going black. The last thing they displayed was a single line of code:

[USER IDENTITY: OVERWRITTEN]

Elora looked at him, her hands shaking as she reached out to touch his forehead. She didn't see the boy from the North Ridge anymore. She didn't even see the vengeful ghost. She saw something hollow. Something that felt like the cold vacuum of space.

She pulled her hand back as if burned, her eyes filling with a profound, bone-deep fear.

"Darian?" she whispered, her voice trembling. "What are you? What have you actually become?"

Darian opened his mouth to answer, but all that came out was a burst of static-laced breath as the world turned to darkness and the sound of handcuffs clicking shut filled the air.

The first light of dawn was a cruel, clinical grey that stripped the romance from the dusty loft. Darian stirred, the phantom heat of the night before still clinging to his skin, but the air in the room had turned freezing. He opened his eyes to see Elora standing by the nightstand, her silhouette trembling against the window. She wasn't looking at him. She was looking at the Archon tablet in her hands."Elora," Darian said, his voice gravelly with sleep. "Put that down.""Target Phase 2," she whispered, her voice sounding like it was coming from miles away. She turned the screen toward him, the golden light reflecting in her tear-streaked eyes. "Total liquidation of Vasantari Logistics. Systemic ruin of Elias Vasantari. That’s my father, Darian. That’s the man you told me you didn’t blame."Darian sat up, the bandage on his side pulling painfully. "It’s not what it looks like. It’s part of a larger sequence.""A sequence?" Elora let out a jagged, hollow laugh. "I stayed here. I let m

The black sedan skidded to a halt fifty yards from the rusted skeletal remains of Warehouse 14. Darian didn't wait for the car to fully stop before he kicked the door open. Rain began to fall, a cold, needle-like drizzle that blurred the neon glare of the city behind them."Darian, wait! Your stability is at fifty-eight percent!" Caelan shouted over the hum of the engine, his fingers flying across his tablet. "If you push into combat mode now, you might not come back from the feedback loop!"Darian didn't look back. "Keep the engine running, Caelan. If I’m not out in five minutes, get Mirella out of here and don’t look back.""That’s a suicide plan, and you know it!""Then it's a good thing I'm already a ghost," Darian muttered. He focused his gaze on the warehouse. • Chapter 4: The Price of Secrets

The elevator doors hissed open to the damp, oil-slicked concrete of the Vasantari Manor’s delivery bay. The matte-black sedan was already there, its engine a low, predatory hum against the silence of the underground levels."Get in, get in!" Caelan’s voice barked through the earpiece. "Security just bypassed the elevator lockout. You have about thirty seconds before they start pouring into the garage."Darian didn't need to be told twice. He vaulted into the passenger seat, and before he could even click his seatbelt, Caelan slammed the car into gear. The tires screamed, leaving twin streaks of rubber as they tore toward the exit ramp."That went well," Caelan muttered, white-knuckling the steering wheel as they drifted around a concrete pillar. "You humiliated the city’s biggest shark, danced with his fiancé, and won fifty million dollars. I’m surprised they didn't just call an airstrike on us.""Raka’s too proud for an airstrike," Darian said, his breath hitching as the Archon Syste

  • Chapter 3: Calculated Desires

The music was a sweeping, orchestral tide that should have drowned out the world, but for Darian, it was nothing more than background noise to the frantic pounding of Elora’s heart against his chest."You’re shaking, Elora," Darian whispered, his hand firm on her waist. "That’s not the confident bride-to-be the tabloids promised.""Stop this," she breathed, her eyes darting toward the edge of the dance floor. "Everyone is watching. Raka is watching. If you have any sense of self-preservation left, you’ll walk out that door right now.""I spent five years without a sense of self-preservation. It’s a very freeing way to live." Darian spun her, the gold in his eyes flaring as he caught Raka’s murderous glare from across the room. "Besides, I’m the guest of honor. It’d be rude to leave before the main event."The music hadn't even reached its crescendo when the violins screeched to a halt. Raka Wiranusa had reached the conductor’s podium, his face a mask of barely contained rage. He didn'

The glass doors of the Vasantari Manor slid open with a whisper of pneumatic grace, exhaling a gust of climate-controlled air that smelled of expensive lilies and even more expensive perfume. Darian Wicandra adjusted the cuffs of his midnight-blue suit, the fabric catching the light of a thousand crystal shards dangling from the ceiling."How’s the feed, Caelan?" Darian murmured into his lapel, his voice barely a tremor in the air."Crystal clear, boss," Caelan’s voice crackled in his earpiece, sounding like he was chewing on something. "The specs on that suit are doing wonders for your silhouette. You look less like a vengeful ghost and more like a guy who owns a private island. Or three.""I feel like I’m wearing a tuxedo made of razor blades," Darian muttered, stepping onto the polished marble floor. "Let’s get this over with.""Just remember the plan.
