HARINGTON MANSION

Laura’s heels echoed like gunshots against the marble tiles as she paced angrily back and forth across the living room, her gown still clinging to her like the mockery of what the night was supposed to be.

The glimmering fabric that once made her feel powerful now felt like a costume—one she wanted to tear off in humiliation.

She spun around, her voice sharp and rising.

“Gale, for the last time, are you going to tell me what the hell just happened at the Executive House? Or are you just going to keep sitting there like a statue?”

Gale sat hunched forward on the edge of the couch, suit jacket flung to the floor, tie hanging loosely from his neck. His elbows were braced on his knees, hands laced tightly, and his jaw was locked in the kind of silence that burned louder than words.

Laura stormed closer, her voice louder this time.

“I mean, what was that?! How does someone like Scott—Scott!—get honored at a state dinner hosted by your uncle? How does that even make sens

SCOTT'S GUEST HOUSE Cara stood in front of Scott’s desk, arms crossed loosely as he sat in his chair, going through the checklist one last time. His eyes scanned the details on the tablet in front of him, but it was Cara’s sharp, focused presence that anchored the moment.“So everything’s still on track?” Scott asked without looking up.“Yes,” Cara replied confidently. “Guest list remains intact—no last-minute changes. I reconfirmed this morning. Our names are on there, under the aliases we used. No security alerts or complications.”Scott leaned back in his chair, finally meeting her gaze. “Good. I just don’t want any surprises tomorrow.”Cara hesitated for a moment, then spoke up. “Are you sure we shouldn’t put some soldiers on standby? Just in case Gale or Laura decides to pull something unexpected?”Scott shook his head. “No need. Gale might be a lot of things, but he’s not stupid. Especially not on the day he’s trying to impress half the country. Presidents, senators, foreign i

THE SPAThe air smelled of rose oil. Laura and Camilla sat side by side in recliners, faces glowing from their facial treatments, feet soaking in bowls of warm, citrus-infused water. A spa attendant moved silently around them, adjusting towels and refilling water.Laura leaned her head back against the soft headrest and exhaled dramatically.Camilla glanced sideways at her. “That sounded heavy. Stressing over the big day again? Relax, it's your bachelorette eve.”Laura scoffed lightly. “You have no idea.”“Well,” Camilla grinned, “I can guess. You’ve been yelling at your planner, biting your stylist’s head off, and still haven’t settled on a second after-party outfit.”Laura lifted a cucumber slice from one eye and turned to her friend. “It’s not that. Damian came by the house yesterday. And we kissed.”Camilla’s hand froze. She slowly lowered her water glass. “Wait. What?”Laura nodded, her lips twitching with annoyance. “In my living room. While Gale was upstairs.”“You’re joking,"

GALE'S MANSION The front door clicked as Gale stepped in with Damian following behind him. Laura, relaxing lazily on the couch with the tv remote control in her hand and a cup of tea on the side table, looked up as the two men entered. She straightened her posture slightly, her eyes first landing on Gale, then lingering...just briefly on Damian."You're back," she said with a smile that was warm, but practiced.Gale leaned over and gave her a light kiss on the lip. "We had some catching up to do."Damian’s eyes didn’t leave Laura as she stood up and smoothed her dress. “Laura,” he greeted, voice smooth and low, “always a pleasure.”Laura returned the smile politely. “Damian. It’s been a while.”Her tone was cordial, but she avoided eye contact. She knew Damian was watching her, he always watched her. Gale either didn’t notice or didn’t care. As usual.Laura called on the maid. "Angela, please see if Mr Damian needs anything."“Can I get you anything, sir?” Angela asked Damian, standi

ROLAND GRAY & ASSOCIATES The doors swung open as Gale Harrington walked in, dressed in navy blue suit and expensive cologne. The receptionist gave him a respectful nod as he passed, and within seconds, he was stepping into the private office of Roland Gray himself.Roland stood, buttoning his blazer. “Mr. Harrington,” he said with a professional smile. “Always a pleasure.”“Thanks for seeing me on short notice,” Gale replied, shaking his hand briefly before taking the seat across the desk.“Of course. You sounded... urgent.”Gale reached into his briefcase and retrieved a slim, leather-bound folder. “These are the documents I mentioned on the phone. From the Grayson acquisition period.”Roland took them calmly, placed on his reading glasses, and began flipping through the pages. He said nothing at first, only the occasional sound of turning paper broke the silence. But the slight furrow in his brow deepened as he moved from one document to the next.Gale sat back, watching him caref

GALE'S MANSIONGale sat on the long couch in their lounge, flipping absently through a tablet screen. Beside him, Laura scrolled through her phone, occasionally looking up to share her thoughts with enthusiasm.“I think we should go with the gold-accented centerpieces for the reception tables,” she said, barely noticing he hadn’t responded to the last five things she mentioned. “It adds that royal touch. What do you think?”Silence.Laura looked up. “Gale.”He didn’t answer. His eyes were still on the tablet, but his fingers had stopped scrolling.“Gale!” she snapped. He flinched slightly and turned to her. “What?”She scoffed and dropped her phone on the coffee table. “Seriously? You’ve barely said two words. Are you even listening?”Gale forced a smile. "Of course, I'm listening. Go on."Laura sighed and continued. “…and by the way, I told the stylist that the dress for the after-party has to have Swarovski stones. Not those cheap crystals they tried to pass off earlier. Can you ima

AUNT KATE'S HOUSE The aroma of sizzling bacon and freshly buttered toast filled the air. Aunt Kate moved around her kitchen with ease. Leah stood beside her by the counter, helping with plating.Scott sat at the breakfast table, scrolling through his phone. The early morning surprise visit and the spontaneous birthday celebration had warmed his heart more than he’d admit. For once, things felt simple.Leah walked to him with a playful smirk. “Hey, don’t just sit there looking like a guest. Come help us.”Scott held up both hands. “I’ve learned to stay out of the way when women are cooking. You taught me that the hard way.”“Smart man,” Aunt Kate said as she brought over the first plate, setting it in front of him. “But you can set the juice glasses at least.”Leah dropped into the seat beside him with a mock groan. “He’s spoiled.”“I’m efficient,” Scott corrected with a grin. The three of them began to eat, light laughter weaving through bits of conversation about cakes, Leah’s run-i
