Gale picked up the phone on his desk, his fingers moving swiftly across the buttons as he dialed an internal line.

“Evans,” he said coolly into the receiver, “come to my office. Now.”

He dropped the phone back into its cradle.

Laura, now leaning on his desk, crossed her arms with a skeptical tilt of her head. “And what exactly do you think that’s going to achieve?”

Gale was already adjusting his tie, straightening it like it would somehow give him the upper hand in what was coming. “I’m going to have a little chat with him.”

Laura’s tone was dry, unimpressed. “You actually believe he’ll just… tell you everything? That he’ll confess to betraying you and handing Scott information?”

Gale finally turned to face her. “No,” he said. “I don’t think he’ll be honest with me. Not at first. But Evans isn’t stupid. He’s worked in this company long enough to know how things shift—and who ends up on top.”

Laura raised a brow. “And you think you’re on top right now?”

Gale’s jaw tensed. “I’m still in

SCOTT'S GUEST HOUSE Scott slumped into the leather armchair in his living room, his tie already discarded and the first few buttons of his shirt undone. Every muscle in his body was aching with exhaustion. The entire day at the office had been draining. Meetings had stretched longer than they should have, proposals had piled up on his desk, and endless discussions about the transition of the company’s new name had kept him engaged from morning till night. Although his mind sometimes kept drifting back to what Cara had told him earlier about Lisa. The thought of her locked inside, under watch, and unable to move freely, filled him with an anger he couldn’t shake. He tried to shake it off, forcing himself to focus on his own exhaustion. He rose from the chair, stripped off his shirt, and walked into the bathroom. By the time he stepped out, a towel wrapped around his waist, he felt only slightly better. He dried off, pulled on a fresh shirt, and let himself collapse onto the bed. The

AUNT KATE'S HOUSE Aunt Kate sat in her living room, her body sinking into the couch like she had been glued there. Her shoes were already tossed carelessly at the foot of the sofa, her stockings wrinkled around her ankles. She let out a long sigh, her shoulders rising and falling heavily.“Lord have mercy,” she muttered, rubbing her calves slowly with her hands. “I’m not as young as I used to be. Standing all day in that shop… I feel like my bones are begging for retirement.”She chuckled weakly at her own words, though exhaustion was clear in her voice. Her hair, usually pinned tightly in a bun during working hours, now hung loosely over her shoulders, strands sticking out after a long day.“Leah better hurry and get back,” she continued mumbling to herself. “She’s the one with all the energy. Young blood. She can stay in that bakery till midnight and not complain. Me? I need my bed.”With that, Aunt Kate dragged herself off the couch and trudged into the bathroom. The sound of run

DREAMLAND BAKERY Leah’s heart pounded so hard she could hear it in her ears, as though it was trying to leap out of her chest. By the time she pushed the shop door open, the little bell above it jingling loudly, she stumbled inside and immediately leaned back against the wall. Her chest rose and fell as though she had just run a marathon. She pressed a hand flat against her sternum and closed her eyes tightly. “Oh my God… what is wrong with me,” she whispered under her breath, trying to steady herself.“Leah?”Her eyes flew open. Aunt Kate was standing behind the counter, wiping down trays with a cloth. She raised an eyebrow, half concerned, half annoyed. “Well, look who finally decided to show up,” Aunt Kate teased lightly. “I thought you’d gotten lost between here and home.”Leah jumped at the sound of her voice, her entire body jerking like a startled cat. She clutched her handbag tighter to her chest and looked at her aunt with wide eyes. “Oh—oh, Aunt Kate. You scared me.”Au

AUNT KATE'S HOUSE Aunt Kate was already dressed neatly, her hair tucked into a bun as she bustled about the living room with her handbag and keys. She was always the organized one, ready to face the day with her usual energy. But Leah? Leah was still in her room, taking her sweet time.“Leah!” Aunt Kate called out, her voice echoing down the hallway. “If you don’t hurry up, the customers will open the shop themselves! And you know how cranky people get when they don’t have their morning bread rolls and croissants!”From inside her room came Leah’s voice, sing-songy and playful. “I’m almost ready! Just five more minutes, Auntie!”Aunt Kate rolled her eyes dramatically, though a fond smile tugged at her lips. “Five more minutes? That’s what you said ten minutes ago. Do you want the customers to think we’re running a lazy bakery?”Leah finally emerged from her room, still fiddling with the sleeves of her blouse. She walked barefoot across the floor, her hair slightly messy but her eyes

ABC TECHNOLOGIES The long table of the conference room gleamed under the lights, reflecting the rows of staff seated with notepads and laptops in front of them. Every eye in the room was fixed on Scott, who stood at the head of the table. His presence alone commanded attention.“Good morning, everyone,” Scott began, his voice steady, deep, and confident. “I know most of you already know me by name, but I want to take this moment to properly introduce myself to you as your new CEO — Scott Grayson.”A ripple of whispers ran through the room. Some faces lit up with admiration, others showed nervous curiosity. Many of the employees had only ever heard about Scott in passing, and now here he was, speaking directly to them — a man whose reputation preceded him.Scott’s gaze swept across the room. “I want you all to understand something very clearly. We are at the threshold of a new chapter. This company has accomplished much in the past, but the world around us is moving quickly. Technol

Cara woke up before the sun had fully risen, her body moving almost mechanically as she prepared for the day. She slipped into her dark fitted jacket, tied her hair into a neat ponytail, and studied her reflection in the mirror. Scott had asked her to check on Lisa. On the surface, it seemed simple, but Cara knew Scott never wasted his words. If he wanted Lisa checked on, then there had to be more going on beneath the surface. And knowing Scott as she did, he must have sensed something before even voicing the command.By the time she left her apartment, the city was beginning to stir awake. Her first destination was Lisa’s workplace. Scott had said nothing about what to expect, only that she should go and see. —EVENTS BY L.RCara tightened her grip on the steering wheel as she parked in front of the glassy office building. She knew this was one place Lisa never toyed with.
