At the large grounds where the entire field operatives of the Fourth Division stood, Lieutenant General Miranda Hernandez stood facing the crowd which consisted of not less than eighty people, as she took over the microphone from the Technical Unit.

"200 years ago, the first Portal appeared in the then city of Rio De Janeiro, a city in Brazil. A large pit in the face of the Earth." General Miranda stated as she stood in front of the large screen which displayed maps and information.

"And from these Portals, came mankind's worst nightmare—Monsters." Silence rained on the entire hall while she spoke.

"This marked the start of what almost turned out to be the extinction of the human race." She added as she pointed at the screen while it displayed several images of destroyed cities, facilities, people, vehicles and animals alike.

"From Brasil in South America to Chicago, USA in the North,, to Kyoto, Japan in Asia, to Lagos, Nigeria in Africa, to Vienna in Australia, to Madrid, Spai

  • Chapter 185: You're Lucky

Kyle trudged through the Tiger Guild lobby, with his stomach begging for food."Shut up, you," he muttered to his belly, patting it like it'd listen. The fancy lights overhead buzzed softly, and the air still smelled like flowers—too clean, too rich. He felt like a smudge on a shiny mirror, sticking out worse than a slime in a soup bowl."Kyle Carver!" a sharp voice cut through the hum of the lobby. He froze mid-step, nearly tripping over his own feet. Turning, he saw her—the interviewer lady with the tight bun and glasses that could cut glass. She stood by her desk, arms crossed, looking at him like he'd just tracked mud on her perfect floor. Which, okay, he might've."Uh... yeah?" he said, shuffling over. His heart did a little flip—did he mess up already? Was she kicking him out?She didn't smile, just adjusted her glasses and stared him down. "I'm Mara. Official registrar for the Tiger Guild. You're an F-rank now, so listen up. You need to be here tomorrow, 8 a.m. sharp. Not 8:01,

  • Chapter 184: Not Scouted

Muscle Guy puffed out his chest. "They're scouting me for sure. I crushed that frog.""Yeah, after kissing the wall," Lila muttered under her breath. Kyle bit back a laugh.Wolfe ignored them, pulling a tablet from his jacket. He tapped it, squinting at the screen. "Results are in. When I call your name, step forward. If you're scouted, they'll tell you where to go. If not, sit your butt back down."The room went quiet, tension thick as mud. Kyle's stomach twisted.'Scouted? Me?'He didn't even know what that meant, really—just that it sounded big. Better than hauling scrap, that's for sure. But after that messy wolf fight? No way. He'd probably freaked them out more than impressed them.Wolfe started reading. "Rick—" Muscle Guy stepped up, grinning like an idiot. "—scouted by Knight Guild. Go to the west hall.""Yes!" He pumped a fist and strutted off, flexing one last time. "Told you!""Trenton—" Red Hair perked up. "—scouted by Fangs Guild. East hall."Trenton whooped, flipping his

  • Chapter 183: Wild

The wolf lunged, claws scraping the floor. Kyle dove to the side, crashing into the wall shoulder-first. Pain shot through his arm, but he scrambled up as the wolf spun around, snapping its jaws.He swung the dagger—missed by a mile. The wolf's claws raked the air, inches from his chest, and he stumbled back, tripping over his own feet.Laughter echoed from outside—Red Hair, probably. "Slum boy's gonna be dog food!" he heard through the door."Shut up!" Kyle yelled, but his voice cracked. The wolf charged again, and he barely rolled out of the way, its teeth snapping where his leg had been. He was losing—bad. His breaths came fast, shallow, and his hands shook.'I can't do this. I'm not a Hunter. I'm just a nobody.'The wolf circled him, growling low. He could see the guild masters' shadows in the windows above, watching, judging.'They think I'm a joke. Everyone does.' His mind flashed to Natalie—her purple hair, her loud laugh, her shoving that cash at him. "You've got a shot," she'

  • Chapter 182: Scraps

"What a load of bullshit."Kyle stood by the gear table, his fingers brushing over a scratched-up dagger. It wasn't shiny or cool like the swords the other recruits were grabbing—it was small, chipped, and kind of sad-looking.'It's something, I guess,' he thought with a smirk. He slipped it into his belt, then grabbed a basic vest that smelled like old sweat and metal. It hung loose on his skinny frame, but it'd have to do.Around him, the other newbies were buzzing with energy. Muscle Guy flexed in his new vest like he was posing for a billboard, while Red Hair twirled a knife between his fingers—until he dropped it and cursed loud enough to echo.Bow Girl was quieter, testing the weight of a short bow with a nod, like she already knew what she was doing. Kyle just tried not to trip over his own boots as he shuffled back to the benches.Instructor Wolfe stood on the platform, arms crossed, watching them like a hawk. His scar gleamed under the warehouse lights, and his gravelly voice

  • Chapter 181: Test? Already

Kyle leaned against the wall by the east door, his hands stuffed deep in his pockets. The Tiger Guild lobby still hummed around him—people coming and going, their voices a low buzz that made his head spin.He could still feel the weight of everyone's stares, the whispers about the "slum freak" who'd knocked out Scarface with a single touch. His patched jeans and faded shirt felt like a neon sign screaming "I don't belong here." But he was in. Barely, sure, but in.He shifted his weight, wincing as his boots squeaked on the shiny floor. His legs ached from the ten-mile walk, and his arm still stung under the bandages from that monster fight. 'Man, I need a nap,' he thought, rubbing his eyes. '"Or a sandwich. Or both.' His stomach growled, loud enough that a guy nearby—a slick-looking dude with a sword slung over his back—shot him a weird look."Uh, sorry," Kyle muttered, turning red. Sword Guy just smirked and walked off, leaving Kyle to slump back against the wall. 'Great. Even my sto

  • Chapter 180: I'm in?

Kyle slouched in the hard plastic chair, his patched jeans creaking against the seat. The Hunter Guild lobby buzzed around him—people chatting, boots clacking on the shiny floor, and the hum of that fancy air conditioning making his skin prickle. He stared at his boots, scuffed and muddy from the long walk, trying to ignore the whispers and smirks from the other applicants. 'Natalie believes in me,' he told himself, clenching his fists. 'That's enough.' He was so lost in his thoughts that he didn't notice the three girls walking up to him until they were right there. They didn't look mean—no sneers or fancy coats like the jerks outside. Just curious, maybe. One had short black hair and a freckled nose, another rocked a ponytail and a bright green jacket, and the third had glasses that kept slipping down her face. "Hey," Freckles said, tilting her head. "You're from the slums, right? Like, the real slums?" Kyle blinked, caught off guard. "Uh... yeah? Why?" Ponytail grinned, lean
