The Search for Truth

Three hours of internet research had taught Theo that people had no idea what they were talking about when it came to werewolves.

He scrolled through another forum thread claiming that werewolves were created by a virus. The previous site had insisted they were cursed by witches. Before that, he'd read a blog post arguing they were actually aliens.

'This is useless,' Theo thought, closing his laptop with more force than necessary.

The problem was separating fiction from fact. Every movie, book, and TV show had different rules. Some said silver killed werewolves. Others claimed it was wolfsbane. One particularly creative website suggested they were vulnerable to chocolate.

Theo seriously doubted that last one.

He leaned back in his chair and rubbed his eyes. The sun was fully up now, streaming through his window. He should probably sleep because he'd been awake for almost twenty-four hours but he didn't feel tired at all.

Another benefit of Enhanced Physiology, he supposed.

A notification chimed in his vision, making him sit up straight.

[Daily Quest Available]

Quest: Morning Training

Objectives:

Complete 50 Push-ups (0/50)

Complete 50 Sit-ups (0/50)

Run 3 Miles (0/3)

Practice Claw Extension (0/10)

Reward: 5 EXP, +1 Strength, +1 Endurance

Time Limit: 24 Hours

Failure Penalty: -2 to all stats for 24 hours

Theo stared at the quest. The first three objectives were standard fitness exercises. But that last one...

'Practice Claw Extension?'

He looked down at his hands. They looked normal. Human. But the system clearly thought he could extend claws like the wolf from last night had possessed.

'How do I even...'

Before he could finish the thought, another notification appeared.

[New Function: System Guide]

[Would you like tutorial assistance for new abilities?]

[Yes] [No]

Theo mentally selected Yes.

[Claw Extension Tutorial]

Step 1: Focus on your fingertips

Step 2: Channel your werewolf bloodline energy

Step 3: Will the transformation to occur

Note: Partial transformations become easier with practice. Current success rate: 15%

Fifteen percent success rate. That wasn't exactly confidence-inspiring.

Still, Theo held up his right hand and stared at his fingertips. He tried to focus on them, whatever that meant.

Nothing happened.

'Channel werewolf bloodline energy,' he thought, remembering the second step.

But what did that even feel like? He didn't feel any different than he had before the bite, except for the enhanced senses and strength.

Theo closed his eyes and tried to sense anything different inside himself. For a long moment, there was nothing. Then, like finding a muscle he'd never used before, he felt it.

A heat deep in his chest, pulsing in rhythm with his heartbeat. It felt wild and primal, like something caged and eager to break free.

His bloodlust meter flashed: 22/100.

'Careful,' Theo warned himself. 'Don't let it take over.'

He grasped that feeling gently, like picking up a live wire, and tried to direct it toward his fingertips.

Pain shot through his hand.

Theo's eyes snapped open just in time to see his fingernails elongate, darkening and sharpening into curved black claws about two inches long. They looked like they could tear through flesh with ease.

[Partial Transformation Successful]

[Claw Extension: 1/10]

[Bloodlust +3]

[Current Bloodlust: 25/100]

Theo stared at his hand in fascination and horror. The claws were really sharp and deadly.

He flexed his fingers experimentally. The claws moved naturally, as if they'd always been there. He could feel the strength in them, the way they could grip and tear.

'This is insane,' he thought. 'I really am a werewolf.'

He spent the next few minutes practicing, extending and retracting the claws on both hands. It got easier each time, though his bloodlust meter crept up slowly with each transformation.

By the tenth successful extension, the notification updated:

[Claw Extension: 10/10]

[Objective Complete]

[Bloodlust +10]

[Current Bloodlust: 35/100]

Thirty-five out of a hundred. Still safe, but climbing faster than he liked.

Theo made his claws retract one final time, watching his nails return to their normal human appearance. He needed to be more careful about using his werewolf abilities. If his bloodlust hit one hundred, the system had warned about an "Uncontrolled Full Moon Transformation."

He had a feeling that wouldn't end well.

The other quest objectives were easier. Fifty push-ups and sit-ups felt almost trivial with his enhanced strength. Before the bite, Theo could barely manage twenty push-ups before his arms gave out. Now, he completed all fifty without breaking a sweat.

The run was different. He didn't have a treadmill, so he'd have to go outside. And that meant people might see him.

'Later,' Theo decided. 'I'll do it tonight when it's dark.'

For now, he needed to find actual information about the supernatural world. The internet was useless, which meant he needed to find someone who knew the truth.

Someone who understood what he'd become.

His phone buzzed with a text message. Theo's stomach sank when he saw the sender was Blake Morrison.

Blake: where you at cross? you didnt show for school. Hiding like a bitch?

Theo deleted the message without responding. Blake and his crew were the least of his problems now.

Another message came through immediately:

Blake: you owe my uncle money. hes not happy. better pay up or things get worse for you

Blake's uncle was some mid-level enforcer, and he'd been bleeding Theo's family dry for months.

Before last night, Theo would have felt fear reading that message. But now, he felt a burning desire to show Blake exactly how much things had changed.

His bloodlust meter ticked up to 40/100.

'No,' Theo forced himself to calm down. 'Not yet. I need to be smarter than that.'

Rushing in and exposing his abilities would be stupid. He needed to understand the rules of this new world first. Learn what he was capable of and figure out who his real enemies were.

Then he could deal with Blake and the Crimson Fang gang.

Theo opened his laptop again and tried a different search approach. Instead of looking for "werewolves," he searched for unexplained animal attacks in Riverside City.

The results were more promising.

Multiple news articles from the past few years mentioned unusual incidents. A gang member found dead with animal bites that police couldn't identify. Several reports of large dogs seen in the industrial district at night. A string of disappearances near the old docks that were never solved.

One article in particular caught his attention. It was from a local news blog, dated three months ago:

MYSTERIOUS SHOP OPENS IN DOCKSIDE - LOCALS SUSPICIOUS

A new pawn shop calling itself "Grimm's Curiosities" has opened on Harlow Street, despite the area's declining economy. The owner, who goes only by Mr. Grimm, claims to buy and sell rare antiques and unusual items. When asked about his business model, Grimm stated "I serve a very specific clientele with very specific needs." The shop's unusual hours (midnight to 4 AM, Wednesday through Saturday only) and strange inventory have raised eyebrows among neighbors.

Theo read the article twice. A pawn shop that only opened at midnight, in the same district where he'd been attacked. And where the wolf had appeared.

'Very specific clientele with very specific needs.'

It could be nothing. Just an eccentric shop owner.

Or it could be exactly what he was looking for.

He checked the address: 847 Harlow Street. That was only about fifteen blocks from his apartment, deeper into the run-down industrial area.

Theo glanced at his phone. It was 2 PM now. If the article was accurate, the shop wouldn't open until midnight. That gave him ten hours.

He could complete his daily quest, rest, and then check out this Grimm's Curiosities tonight.

The rest of the day passed slowly. Theo helped his mother with lunch, watched her take her medications, and made sure she was comfortable. She seemed weaker today, spending most of her time sleeping.

Every time he looked at her, lying frail in her bed, Theo's resolve hardened.

He would get stronger, pay off the debts and get her the treatment she needed whatever the cost.

At 10 PM, Theo slipped out of the apartment for his run. The streets of Dockside were dangerous at night, but he wasn't worried anymore. Let someone try to jump him. They'd get a very unpleasant surprise.

The three-mile run felt incredible. His enhanced body moved with a grace and power he'd never experienced before. He could feel his muscles working, his heart pumping, his lungs pulling in air with perfect efficiency.

By the time he finished, his daily quest completed with a satisfying chime:

[Daily Quest Complete: Morning Training]

[Rewards: 5 EXP, +1 Strength, +1 Endurance]

[Current EXP: 15/100]

[Strength: 15 to 16]

[Endurance: 14 to 15]

Theo felt the stats increase immediately. His muscles seemed to tighten slightly and his breathing became even easier. It was a small change, but noticeable.

'If I do this every day,' he thought, 'I'll be twice as strong in a month.'

The idea was intoxicating.

He checked the time: 11:15 PM. Close enough.

Theo made his way toward Harlow Street, keeping to the shadows. The industrial district was even more run-down than his neighborhood, full of abandoned warehouses and empty lots. Streetlights were broken or missing entirely, leaving pools of darkness everywhere.

Most people would be terrified walking these streets alone at night but Theo's Night Vision ability made it feel like mid-afternoon.

He found 847 Harlow Street wedged between two buildings. The shop itself was small, barely wider than a single-car garage, with a faded wooden sign hanging above the door:

GRIMM'S CURIOSITIES

Rare Items, Strange Goods, Unusual Services.

We Buy What Others Won't

The windows were covered with thick curtains, but light seeped through the gaps. The shop was open.

Theo stood across the street, watching. His enhanced hearing picked up movement inside, but he couldn't make out any details through the walls.

This was it. If he walked through that door, there was no going back. He'd be stepping into the supernatural world for real.

'I don't have a choice,' Theo reminded himself. 'I need answers.'

He crossed the street and pushed open the door.

A bell chimed overhead, and the smell of old books and incense washed over him. The shop's interior was cramped, every surface covered with bizarre items. Ancient-looking weapons hung on the walls. Strange crystals sat in display cases. Jars filled with unidentifiable substances lined the shelves.

And behind the counter, reading a leather-bound book, sat an old man.

He looked up as Theo entered, and their eyes met.

The man's eyes were sharp, the color of aged amber. He studied Theo for a long moment, then smiled slowly.

"Well, well," the old man said, his voice gravelly but strong. "I was wondering when you'd show up, pup."

Theo froze. "You... you know what I am?"

The old man closed his book and leaned forward on his elbows. "Of course I know. I could smell the fresh bloodline on you from three blocks away." He tilted his head. "The real question is, do you know what you are?"

"I'm..." Theo hesitated. "I'm a werewolf."

"Are you now?" The old man's smile widened, showing teeth that seemed just a bit too sharp. "And what makes you so sure?"

"I was bitten last night....By a..." Theo struggled to describe it. "By a huge black wolf. It was dying, and it bit me, and now I have this... this system, and..."

The old man held up a hand, cutting him off. "Stop, You'll give yourself away talking like that out loud." He gestured to the door. "Lock it. Flip the sign to closed. We have much to discuss, Theo Cross."

Theo's blood ran cold. "How do you know my name?"

The old man's amber eyes gleamed with amusement. "Because I knew the wolf that bit you. And before it died, it told me to watch for a stubborn, broken boy who refused to stay down no matter how many times he was beaten."

He stood, revealing that despite his age, he was still tall and powerfully built.

"My name is Grimm," the old man said. "And it seems you and I have business to conduct."

Because I'm guessing you didn't form a pack just to have Sunday brunches."Sarah spread out a map of Riverside on a makeshift table. A piece of plywood across two sawhorses. • Consequences

Theo woke up in Grimm's shop. Every muscle in his body screaming. The fight with Marcus had been two days ago, but he still felt like he'd been hit by a truck. Even with his enhanced healing, the damage had been severe. Three cracked ribs. Deep lacerations across his chest and arms.
