Theo locked the shop door and flipped the sign to Closed as instructed, his heart pounding. Every instinct screamed that he was putting himself in danger by being alone with this stranger.
But those same instincts told him that Grimm was different. Dangerous, yes, but not to him. Not yet, anyway.
"Good," Grimm said, moving around the counter. "Now, let me see it."
"See what?"
"Your claws, pup. Extend them."
Theo hesitated for only a moment before focusing on that wild heat in his chest. The transformation came easier this time, his fingernails darkening and extending into curved black claws.
Grimm stepped closer, studying Theo's hands with the critical eye of an expert examining fine craftsmanship. "Hmm. Clean transformation. No trembling. You've already practiced, haven't you?"
"The system gave me a quest," Theo said. "I had to practice claw extension ten times."
The old man's eyebrows rose. "System?.....Interesting.... The wolf's gift runs deeper than I thought." He gestured for Theo to retract his claws. "Most newly bitten werewolves can't manage even a partial transformation for weeks. The fact that you're doing it within twenty-four hours..."
He trailed off, shaking his head.
"What does that mean?" Theo asked.
"It means the wolf that bit you chose well." Grimm returned to his position behind the counter and pulled out two glasses and a bottle of amber liquid. "Sit, we have much to discuss."
Theo took the stool across from him but declined the offered drink. "I need answers. What am I? What are the rules? How do I...."
"Patience," Grimm interrupted, pouring himself a generous amount. "I'll tell you what you need to know. But first, answer me this....why did you come looking for me?"
"I researched werewolves online and found nothing useful. Then I searched for strange occurrences in Dockside and found an article about your shop. It said you serve a very specific clientele with very specific needs...so, I took a chance."
A slow smile spread across Grimm's weathered face. "Smart. Most newly turned would have panicked, exposed themselves, and gotten killed within a week. But you.... you investigated, analyzed, and adapted." He took a sip of his drink. "The wolf's instincts were correct. You're a survivor."
"The wolf," Theo leaned forward. "You said you knew it. What was it? Who was it?"
Grimm's expression darkened. "That's a longer story than we have time for tonight. What you need to know is this, the creature that bit you was ancient, powerful, and dying. It had been hunted by the Silver Order.... They're a human organization dedicated to exterminating our kind."
"Our kind," Theo repeated. "You're a werewolf too."
"Was," Grimm corrected. "I'm retired from that life. But yes, I carry the bloodline." His amber eyes flashed briefly, a reminder of the predator beneath the old man's exterior. "Now, let me explain the world you've stepped into, pup, because ignorance will get you killed faster than silver."
Theo nodded, listening intently.
"First truth, you are not alone. Supernatural creatures exist throughout the world, hidden among humans. Werewolves, vampires, mages, shifters of various kinds, and things far stranger. We live in the shadows, concealing our nature from the mundane population."
"Why hide?" Theo asked. "If there are so many of us...."
"Because humans outnumber us a thousand to one," Grimm cut in sharply. "And because they have technology, weapons, and the numbers to exterminate us if they truly understood what walked among them. We hide because exposure means war, and war means extinction." He fixed Theo with a hard stare. "This is called the Masquerade. It is the First Law of our world, and breaking it carries a death sentence."
Theo's throat went dry. "Death sentence? From who?"
"The Midnight Council. They govern all supernatural creatures in this region, maintaining order and enforcing the Masquerade. Cross them, and you'll wish the Silver Order had found you instead." Grimm took another drink. "Which brings me to your first real problem, pup. The Council doesn't know about you yet, but they will soon. A new werewolf appearing in their territory doesn't go unnoticed for long."
"What happens when they find out?"
"They'll summon you. Question you. Decide whether you're a threat or an asset." Grimm shrugged. "If you're lucky and prove yourself controllable, they'll assign you to an existing pack or let you live as a lone wolf under supervision. If you're unlucky..."
He didn't need to finish that sentence.
Theo's mind raced. "You said 'assign me to a pack.' What does that mean?"
"Werewolves are pack animals, Theo. Our nature drives us to form groups and hierarchies. Most werewolves in the city belong to established packs like Iron Claw, Night Runners and Steel Moon. Each pack controls a territory and has an Alpha who leads by following Council laws."
"And if I don't want to join a pack?"
Grimm's expression was grave. "Then you'll need to be strong enough to stand alone. Very few manage it. A lone wolf is vulnerable, especially a newly turned one."
Theo thought about the system, about the quests and abilities it offered. "I'm getting stronger. The sys....my abilities are growing every day."
"Growth means nothing without control," Grimm warned. "Tell me, what's your bloodlust at right now?"
The question caught Theo off guard. He pulled up his status mentally.
"Forty out of a hundred," he said.
Grimm's eyes narrowed. "Forty? Already?" He leaned back, studying Theo with renewed interest. "That's high for someone so new. What have you been doing?"
"I got angry," Theo admitted. "Thinking about the people who hurt me. The gang that's bleeding my family dry. And the transformations seem to raise it too."
"Of course they do. Every time you tap into the wolf, you risk losing yourself to it." Grimm set down his glass with a heavy thunk. "Listen carefully, pup, because this is the most important thing I'll tell you tonight... You are not just a human with wolf powers. You are two beings in one body.....human and beast. The beast wants to hunt, to dominate, to kill. It doesn't understand mercy or morality......or consequences. If you let your bloodlust hit one hundred, the beast takes control, and you'll wake up covered in blood with no memory of what you've done."
Theo's hands clenched. "How do I control it?"
"Discipline. Meditation. Never transforming while angry. Completing your daily tasks....I assume your system gives you those?" At Theo's nod, Grimm continued. "Good. Those quests are designed to channel the wolf's energy constructively. Follow them and avoid situations that spike your bloodlust until you're stronger."
"So I just... hide? Let people keep pushing me around?" Theo couldn't keep the bitterness from his voice.
Grimm's laugh was harsh. "I didn't say that, I said be smart about it. There's a difference between fighting when necessary and going on a rampage because someone insulted you." He pointed a gnarled finger at Theo. "You want revenge? Fine, earn it. Get stronger. Learn the rules. Then take what's yours without exposing the supernatural world or losing control."
The old man's words made sense, even if Theo didn't like them. Patience had never been his strong suit, but he could see the wisdom in waiting.
"You mentioned different types of werewolves," Theo said. "Born versus bitten. What's the difference?"
"Born werewolves are exactly that, born to werewolf parents. They grow up knowing what they are, learning control from childhood, and usually belonging to established pack bloodlines. They're stronger, more stable, and look down on bitten wolves as inferior."
"And bitten wolves?"
"Like you, humans transformed by a werewolf's bite. We're considered mutts by the born wolves.....unpredictable, unstable, and weaker." Grimm's smile turned sharp. "Of course, that's not always true. Some of the most powerful werewolves in history were not born, but bitten. It depends on the wolf that bit you and how strong your will is."
Theo thought about the massive black wolf that had died in the alley. "The wolf that bit me... you said it was ancient and powerful. Does that mean something?"
For the first time, Grimm hesitated. "That wolf was special.... Very special.... The fact that it chose you, specifically, to receive its bloodline..." He shook his head. "You're going to attract attention, pup. The dangerous kind. When the Council learns about you, they'll want to know everything......like who bit you, why, what bloodline you carry."
"What bloodline?" Theo asked. "Is that important?"
"More than you can imagine. But that's a conversation for another time." Grimm stood abruptly. "You've learned enough for one night. Any more and you'll be overwhelmed....Go home. Complete your daily quests. Keep your head down. And whatever you do, don't transform in public."
Theo remained seated. "Wait.....You said the Council will find me eventually. What should I do when they come?"
"Be honest..... be respectful and don't threaten anyone, but don't grovel either. Show strength but accept their authority." Grimm paused. "And if they ask who's been teaching you, you can mention my name. It might help. Or it might make things worse. Hard to say with that lot."
"That's not very reassuring."
"It's not meant to be. You're a werewolf now, Theodore. Nothing about this life is reassuring." Grimm moved to the door and unlocked it. "Now go. It's almost 1 AM, and you need rest."
Theo stood, but paused at the door. "Why are you helping me? You don't even know me that well."
The old man's expression softened slightly. "The wolf that bit you was... a friend. A very old friend. Before it died, it asked me to watch over its successor if one appeared. I'm simply honoring that promise."
"Will you train me?"
Grimm was quiet for a long moment. "Perhaps, If you prove worthy. For now, focus on surviving. Master the basics and don't get yourself killed doing something stupid." He opened the door. "Come back in three days.... midnight."
Theo stepped out into the cold night air, his mind churning with everything he'd learned.
A hidden supernatural world, the Midnight Council, pack politics, the masquerade, bloodlust control and somewhere out there, werewolves who would see him as an inferior mutt worthy only of contempt or death.
The system chimed:

Theo started the walk home, keeping to the shadows. His enhanced senses picked up every sound, every movement in the darkness around him.
Halfway home, those same senses alerted him to a problem.
Someone was following him.
Theo didn't break his pace or look back. He'd learned enough on the streets to know that acknowledging your tail was amateur hour. Instead, he took a turn down a side alley, one he knew had a back exit.
The footsteps behind him quickened.
Theo's bloodlust meter ticked up: 42/100.
He reached the end of the alley and turned, finally looking back.
Three figures stood against the streetlight at the alley's entrance. Even from this distance, Theo recognized the build of the one in the middle.
Blake Morrison.
"Well, well," Blake's voice echoed off the brick walls. "Look who finally crawled out of his hole. We've been looking for you, Theo."
The two thugs with Blake spread out, blocking the alley exit behind Theo. He was boxed in.
Theo's heart rate stayed calm despite the situation. His system had made him stronger. Blake and his friends were just normal humans. They couldn't hurt him anymore.
But Grimm's warning echoed in his mind 'Don't expose yourself. Don't lose control.'
"What do you want, Blake?" Theo asked, keeping his voice level.
"What do I want?" Blake laughed, but there was an edge to it. Something manic. "I want to know what the hell happened to you, Cross. You've been different. Confident. My boys said you walked through the Narrows at midnight like you owned the place." He stepped closer. "Nobody changes that fast. So I'm gonna ask you nice, one time... What... Are....You....On?"
Theo understood then. Blake thought he was taking drugs. Steroids or something similar.
He could work with that.
"Nothing," Theo said. "I just got tired of being scared."
"Bullshit!" Blake pulled out a knife. "My uncle says your family's payment is two weeks late. Says he's gonna send some real collectors to your place tomorrow. Gonna make your sick mommy really understand what happens when people don't pay their debts."
The bloodlust meter spiked: 48/100.
Theo felt his fingers tingle, the claws wanting to extend. The wolf inside him snarled, demanding he tear Blake apart for threatening his mother.
'No,' Theo forced himself to breathe. 'Not here. Not now. I can't expose myself.'
"Tell your uncle he'll get his money," Theo said through clenched teeth.
"Oh, he'll get it," Blake agreed, moving closer with the knife. "But first, I think you need a reminder of where you stand, Cross. You might've gotten brave, but you're still the same pathetic...."
Blake lunged forward with the knife.
Theo's enhanced agility made Blake's attack look like it was happening in slow motion. He sidestepped easily, letting Blake stumble past.
"What the...." Blake spun, shocked.
His two friends rushed forward together.
Theo didn't want to fight. But his body moved on instinct, using his enhanced strength and speed. He caught the first thug's punch and twisted, sending him sprawling. The second one got a palm strike to the chest that knocked the wind from his lungs.
Both went down hard.
Blake stared, his expression shifting from anger to Fear.
"Who are you?" he whispered.
Theo's bloodlust hit 55/100. The beast inside him roared for blood. It would be so easy to extend his claws, to show Blake exactly what he'd become. To make him understand that Theodore Cross was nobody's victim anymore.
But Grimm's words cut through the red haze 'Exposure means death.'
"I'm someone you don't want to mess with anymore," Theo said quietly. "Tell your uncle I'll have his money by the end of the week. And Blake? If you or anyone from your damn gang comes near my mother, I'll make you regret it."
He walked past Blake, who was too shocked to move, and headed for the alley exit.
"This isn't over!" Blake shouted behind him, but his voice shook.
Theo didn't look back.

Dangerous Questions
The day after the Council meeting, Theo went to school exhausted but wired. He'd leveled up to 3, which meant his stats had increased again, but it also meant the system was pushing him harder. His daily quests now required even more, 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, seven miles of running, and forty-five minutes of meditation. He'd completed them all before dawn, then caught two hours of sleep before dragging himself to school. But sleep deprivation didn't matter much with Enhanced Physiology at Level 3. His body recovered faster, needed less rest. Still, his mind felt foggy as he navigated the crowded hallways."Theo!"He turned to find Sarah Chen walking toward him with determined purpose. She wore jeans and a school newspaper t-shirt, her dark hair pulled back in a ponytail, and carried a messenger bag stuffed with notebooks.'Not now,' Theo thought. His bloodlust was already at 52/100 from residual anger about Marcus Kane Jr, and dealing with Sarah's questions was the last thing he nee
The Council Summons
Three days of training with Grimm had taught Theo that he knew absolutely nothing about being a werewolf. Each night, he'd arrive at midnight and leave at dawn, his body aching and his mind stuffed with information. Bloodlust control exercises. Combat forms. Transformation techniques. Pack dynamics. Supernatural politics. The history of werewolf bloodlines.Grimm was a relentless teacher, pushing Theo harder each session. But it was working. His bloodlust control had improved dramatically. He could now manage spikes up to 70/100 without losing himself. His combat forms were becoming second nature. And he'd finally mastered holding a partial transformation for over an hour without strain. The system had rewarded his progress:[STATUS UPDATE]Level: 2 EXP:175/200 Bloodlust: 42/100Skills: Werewolf Combat Forms - LV3 Bloodlust Control - LV2 (New) Partial Transformation Mastery - LV2 (New)But on the fourth day, everything changed.Theo was at school, enduring another boring lectur
First Lesson
Theo woke to sunlight streaming through his window and the smell of bacon cooking. He sat up, momentarily disoriented. His mother hadn't cooked breakfast in months, she'd been too weak to stand at the stove for more than a few minutes. He rushed to the kitchen and found her at the counter, humming softly as she flipped eggs. She looked better than she had in weeks. Her skin had color and her movements were steady."Mom?"She turned with a smile that made Theo's chest tighten. "Good morning, baby. I hope you're hungry.""You're cooking.""I found the money." Her eyes were wet. "Theodore, I don't know what you did, but.....""Don't ask," Theo said quickly. "Just... use it. Get the treatment. Please."She crossed the room and pulled him into a hug. "I already called the clinic. I have an appointment this afternoon." She pulled back, studying his face. "Are you in trouble?""No mom... I promise." It wasn't entirely a lie. The debt was paid, Blake had been scared off, and Grimm was helping
The Beast Within
Theo made it three blocks before he realized Blake was still following him.His enhanced senses picked up the familiar heartbeat, cheap cologne mixed with fear-sweat, and sneakers trying too hard to be quiet on wet pavement.'Stupid,' Theo thought, his bloodlust ticking up to 91/100. 'He saw me at The Pit.'The smart move would be to confront Blake now. But Theo's bloodlust was already dangerously high from three brutal fights. One more spike and he'd lose control completely.'Just get home,' Theo told himself. He picked up his pace through back alleys. Blake kept coming anyway.Theo turned into a dead-end alley. The same one where the wolf had bitten him. He stopped and waited.Blake appeared at the entrance, phone in hand, camera pointed at Theo."I knew it," Blake said, voice shaking. "I fucking knew something was wrong with you. That wasn't normal back there. The way you moved....""Put the phone away, Blake," Theo said quietly."Or what?" Blake's fear was obvious, but desperation
Blood Money
Theo sat at his laptop staring at $5,000. Just the number that would solve all his problems. That's what he owed the Crimson Fang gang. Five thousand dollars that might as well have been five million for someone who worked minimum wage at a convenience store. He'd spent the past two days trying to figure out legitimate ways to get the money. Extra shifts at work would take months. A loan required credit he didn't have. Selling everything he owned wouldn't cover a tenth of it.Which left illegitimate options.Theo pulled up the search he'd been avoiding "Riverside City underground fighting."The first few results were MMA gyms and boxing clubs. Legal and Safe.'Useless.'But buried on the third page of results was a forum post from six months ago"Looking for REAL fights in Riverside. Not that regulated sports BS. Heard there's an underground scene in The Narrows. Anyone know how to get in?"The top reply was brief, If you have to ask, you're not ready. But if you're serious, go to Sul
