The Iron Tower loomed against the night sky like a tombstone.
Marcus stood in the shadows of the building across the street. His leg was trembling. His hands were steady. His mind was clear.
Darnell was inside. Viktor had him. And every second Marcus waited was a second Darnell suffered.
He checked his phone. No messages. No calls. Viktor was waiting. Testing. Watching to see what Marcus would do.
Marcus pulled out the burner phone he'd given to Mrs. Heller. One contact. He dialed.
"Hello?" Her voice was shaky.
"Mrs. Heller. It's Marcus. I need you to do something for me."
"What is it?"
"Call the police. Tell them there's a hostage situation at the Iron Tower. Tell them Viktor Volkov has a man trapped inside. Tell them you have evidence of murder."
Silence. Then: "Will they come?"
"They'll come. But not fast enough." Marcus hung up.
He crossed the street. The main entrance was guarded by four men in gray jackets. All armed. All alert.
Marcus didn't try to be subtle. He walked straight toward them.
"Stop right there," one of the guards said. "This is private property."
Marcus kept walking.
The guard reached for his gun. Marcus closed the distance in two steps. His hand shot out, grabbed the guard's wrist, and twisted. The gun clattered to the ground. Marcus drove his knee into the guard's stomach, then slammed his elbow into the man's temple.
The other three guards reacted. Marcus moved like water. He ducked under a punch, grabbed the second guard's arm, and used his momentum to throw him into the third. Both men went down in a tangle of limbs.
The fourth guard pulled a knife. Marcus caught his wrist mid-swing, twisted until he heard bones crack, and drove his forehead into the man's nose.
Four guards. Ten seconds.
Marcus stepped over the bodies and walked through the front door.
The lobby was empty. No guards. No staff. Just cold concrete and fluorescent lights.
A single elevator stood open. Inside, a note taped to the wall.
*Ninth floor. Come alone. Or your friend dies.*
Marcus stepped into the elevator. His leg was screaming. His spine was on fire. He ignored both.
The elevator rose slowly. Marcus watched the floor numbers climb. He was walking into a trap. He knew it. Viktor knew it.
But Darnell was up there. And Marcus had already failed too many people.
The doors opened on the ninth floor. It was a single large room. No windows. No furniture. Just concrete and steel.
Darnell hung from chains in the center of the room. His face was a mess of blood and bruises. One eye was swollen shut. His shirt was torn. But he was alive.
Viktor stood beside him. A pistol in his hand. A smile on his face.
"Marcus Webb," Viktor said. "The Ghost. I was starting to think you'd never show up."
Marcus stepped off the elevator. "Let him go. This is between you and me."
Viktor laughed. "Oh, I don't think so. See, I've been thinking about this moment for five years. I've been thinking about what I'd do when I finally had you cornered."
He pressed the pistol to Darnell's temple.
"First, I'm going to make you watch your friend die. Then I'm going to kill you. Slowly. Painfully. The way I should have killed you five years ago."
Marcus's hands curled into fists. His body was broken. His leg was useless. But he had one thing Viktor didn't expect.
"Before you do that," Marcus said, "there's something you should know."
Viktor's smile faltered. "What?"
Marcus pulled out his phone. "I recorded everything. Every conversation. Every meeting. Every secret you've ever tried to hide. It's all here. And if I don't walk out of this building alive, it all goes public."
Viktor's face went pale. "You're bluffing."
Marcus smiled. It was not a pleasant expression.
"I never bluff."
He hit send. The files uploaded to a secure server. Viktor lunged for the phone. Marcus was faster. He dropped into a low tackle, driving his shoulder into Viktor's knees. Both men crashed to the ground.
The pistol skittered across the floor. Viktor's hands wrapped around Marcus's throat. Marcus felt the pressure building. His vision started to blur.
But he'd lived through worse. He'd survived a bullet to the spine. He'd survived a helicopter crash. He'd survived five years of hiding.
He wasn't going to die in this room.
Marcus drove his knee into Viktor's groin. The grip loosened. Marcus rolled, grabbed the pistol, and pointed it at Viktor's head.
"Don't move."
Viktor froze. His eyes were wild with rage.
"I'll kill you," Viktor hissed. "I'll kill everyone you've ever loved."
Marcus shook his head. "No. You won't. Because you're going to prison. And I'm going to make sure you never see daylight again."
He raised the pistol and fired.
The bullet hit Viktor's shoulder. Viktor screamed. Marcus fired again. The other shoulder.
"You wanted to watch your enemy suffer," Marcus said. "Now you know how it feels."
He walked to Darnell and cut the chains. Darnell slumped against him.
"Can you walk?" Marcus asked.
Darnell nodded weakly. "I think so."
Marcus helped him toward the elevator. Viktor lay bleeding on the floor.
"This isn't over," Viktor spat. "You hear me? I'll find you. I'll—"
Marcus stepped back into the room. He crouched beside Viktor and spoke in a low voice.
"I spent five years dreaming of this moment. You took everything from me. My men. My life. My future." He paused. "Now I'm going to take everything from you. And when you have nothing left, I'm going to let you rot."
He stood up and walked away.
Viktor screamed into the empty room.
*Now that Viktor is wounded, should Marcus call the police or finish him off personally?*

The Bodyguard's Price
The warehouse sat on the waterfront, rotting and forgotten.Marcus approached from the east side, moving through shadows. Nadia was twenty meters behind him, her service weapon drawn. The meeting with Gregor was set for midnight. They were early."Stay here," Marcus whispered. "If I'm not back in fifteen minutes, call Darnell."Nadia nodded. "Be careful. The Detective's Secret
Nadia Cross's apartment was dark when Marcus arrived. He'd been watching for an hour. No lights. No movement. Either she was gone or she was waiting.Marcus picked the lock and slipped inside. The apartment was small but neat. Photographs on the walls. A police badge on the counter. A half-empty coffee cup on the table. She was still here. Just hiding."Detective Cross," Marcus said. His voice was rough.Marcus didn't look at him. "You saved mine first. That's how it works.""Does it? I thought you worked alone."Marcus turned. There was something like humor in Darnell's eyes. Not much. But enough."I'm learning," Marcus said. "Come on. We need to move."Darnell struggled to his feet. "Where to?""Somewhere Viktor's men won't find us. Mrs. Chen's. For now."They descended the fire escape. The streets below were chaos. Police cars. Ambulances. Journalists with cameras. Viktor Volkov, the untouchable king of Veridian Bay, was being wheeled out on a stretcher. His face was white with shock and rage.
