The stolen short sword felt heavy and balanced in Kael’s hand as he crouched motionless among the frozen roots of a giant pine tree. Just a few feet away, the muffled sound of crunching snow and heavy armor announced the arrival of the patrol he had been tracking since leaving the ridge.

He didn't need the system to tell him they were close; his heightened senses could pick up the steady, rhythmic thumping of their human hearts pumping warm blood through their veins.

"Check the tracks by the ridge again," the lead sergeant grunted, his breath pluming in the freezing air as he wiped sleet from his helmet. "If Commander Vance finds out we lost a supply shipment because we were lazy, our heads will be mounted on the gate spikes before dawn."

"Relax, Sergeant," the younger guard muttered, shifting his spear lazily to his shoulder. "Nobody survives a night out in these woods without freezing to death. Whoever stole from the supply camp is already food for the mountain wolves."

Kael’s grip tightened on the hilt of his blade. Hearing the name Vance brought a sharp surge of cold memory—the same surname as the commander who stood beside Lord Julian when Kael was thrown into the mass grave. They weren't just patrolling; they were hunting loose ends.

The patrol split up as expected. The two lower-level guards drifted toward the rocky ridge to inspect the old wagon tracks, while the sergeant stood his ground in the center of the trail, pulling a metal flask from his belt.

Kael melted into the shadows like smoke. His Level 3 agility made his movements entirely silent, leaving not a single footprint or snapping twig in his wake. He closed the distance behind the isolated rear guard in less than a second.

Before the guard could turn to check the ridge, Kael clamped a heavy, iron-like hand over the man's mouth and drove his short sword upward beneath the rim of the leather gorget.

*Clack.*

The guard’s spear slipped from his fingers, clattering softly onto the snow as his body went rigid. Kael lowered him gently to the ground, pressing his mouth to the fresh wound.

The warm, rich life energy flooded his system instantly. A rapid string of blue text flashed across his vision.

Kael stood up, his muscles denser, faster, and practically humming with restrained power. Across the clearing, the second guard shouted out into the darkness, breaking the silence of the woods.

"Hey, Marcus? Did you find anything over there?"

When Marcus didn't answer, the second guard started walking back toward the trees, his torch held high. "Marcus? Stop playing games in the dark."

Kael stepped out into the open snow, letting the torchlight catch the cold, pale glare of his crimson eyes.

The guard stopped dead, his breath catching in his throat as he stared at Kael standing over his fallen comrade. "What the—Who goes there?!"

Instead of answering, Kael charged. His new speed turned him into a streak of dark motion across the white snow. Before the guard could raise his spear, Kael closed the gap, striking with a ferocious burst of power.

*Slash.*

The short sword sliced through the guard's arm defense, dropping him to one knee with a sharp cry of pain before a swift, merciless strike ended the fight.

[System Notification]

[You have defeated Level 4 Imperial Guard.]

[Blood Siphon Activated: +1 Strength, +4 BP.]

Two down. Only the sergeant remained.

Across the clearing, the sergeant spun around at the sound of the muffled cry, drawing his broadsword in a flash of polished steel. He saw his two guards lying motionless in the snow and Kael standing over them with blood on his blade.

"What kind of monster are you?" the sergeant roared, his face twisting with fierce anger as he rushed forward to attack.

Kael smiled, gripping his sword tightly as he stepped forward to meet him.

The two massive private enforcers didn't hesitate; they drew their heavy iron-reinforced clubs and lunged forward with murderous intent, eager to please their master and terrify the gathering crowd of onlookers.Immediate trouble crashed down like a falling boulder. The first enforcer swung his club in a vicious, bone-crushing arc aimed straight at Kael's head. The crowd gasped collectively, many commoners turning their heads away to avoid watching the brutal impact.Kael didn't flinch, nor did he blink. With razor-sharp reflexes fueled by his upgraded agility parameter, he stepped smoothly inside the swing, letting the heavy weapon pass harmlessly by his shoulder. Before the enforcer could pull his weapon back, Kael channeled a fraction of his raw physical strength and delivered a lightning-fast palm strike directly i

He didn't flinch, nor did he turn around in a panic. He simply let the hostile words hang in the air, recognizing the arrogant, shrill tone immediately. Standing just a few paces away near the grand stone steps of the central exchange bureau was High Clerk Valen, a heavily pampered official draped in rich velvet robes embroidered with thick, glittering silver coin threads. Valen was flanked by two massive private guild enforcers, pointing a trembling, accusatory finger straight at Kael with a look of absolute, smug disgust.Word of the previous night's vault raid beh

"If those magitech runes trip, we'll have half the guild's elite strike team on our necks before we can even blink."Vesperia Vance's warning hissed through the damp midnight air as she pressed her back hard against the rotting timber siding of the east bazaar warehouse. Cold rain slicked the cobblestones, turning the narrow alleys into dark, reflective trenches.Kael crouched beside her, his fingers resting steady and cold against the reinforced iron-and-oak frame of the minor merchant store's back door. He didn't answer her nervous whisper with words; his mind was entirely locked onto the pulsing, invisible hum of arcane energy vibrating through the wood. The immediate trouble was right here—a high-tier security lock designed by guild artificers to vaporize unauthorized intruders.According to the plan they mapped out after leaving the Blue Lantern tavern, this black-market drop point held the illegal financial ledgers, rare catalyst stones, and high-value blood vials managed by the

"You're either the bravest fool in Valoria or the most dangerous man I've ever met."Vesperia Vance’s voice snapped through the tense quiet of the Blue Lantern tavern as she sat back down on the wooden bench, her gray eyes narrowing as she watched two unconscious Syndicate thugs being dragged away into the shadows by trembling patrons.Kael slipped into the seat opposite her without making a sound, pulling his hood down further to keep his face half-hidden. The immediate trouble had passed, but the lingering threat of the local enforcer network hung heavy in the smoke-filled air. If the Syndicate's main branch found out who had dismantled their men in broad daylight, every cutthroat in the lower district would be hunting them by morning."Bravery has nothing to do with it," Kael replied, his voice a low, steady hum that cut straight through the ambient noise of the room. She stood abruptly in her dim corner booth, her hand resting heavily on the table while two bulky Syndicate thugs blocked her path with menacing grins.Kael, standing just a few yards away near the scarred wooden bar, didn't flinch. He had tracked the enforcers' movements straight from the alley information he gathered, slipping into the tavern mere moments ago. Hearing Vesperia's voice—and more importantly, her surname—sent a cold spark of recognition through his chest. Vance. • Chapter 7: The Alleyway Ambush

The heavy rain pattered relentlessly against the slick cobblestones of the dead-end alley, washing away the grey grime that caked the damp brick walls. In the dim shadows cast by a broken street lamp, the larger thug lowered his heavy iron cudgel, his initial confidence faltering under the cold, piercing weight of Kael’s gaze."You've got a lot of nerve, playing hero in the Syndicate's back yard," the thug sneered, trying to mask his rising unease behind a tough exterior. He motioned to his companion, a wiry man holding a rusted dagger. "Slice him up, Vane. Teach this wanderer how things work in the lower wards."The wiry thug didn't hesitate. He lunged forward with surprising speed, thrusting the jagged blade straight toward Kael’s chest in a swift, horizontal arc.Kael stood completely still until the steel was inches away. To his enhanced perception, the knife moved like a slow-motion pendulum through the damp air. With a subtle twist of his torso, Kael leaned just an inch to the s
