The heavy iron portcullis of the capital’s western gate groaned on rusted hinges as it dragged through the thick, grey slush. Bitter river fog rolled off the banks, swallowing the sputtering torches that lined the stone bridge. A steady stream of shivering laborers, tired merchants, and hooded travelers shuffled through the checkpoint, desperate to get inside before the night curfew locked the inner gates completely.

Kael kept his head down, pulling the heavy wool hood of his travel cloak lower over his forehead. He blended easily into the ragged crowd of commoners, his boots squelching softly in the muddy trench water. Ahead of him, two imperial guards in dented steel breastplates stood beside a massive wooden barricade, lazily waving travelers through with one hand while holding steaming mugs of cheap ale in the other.

"Papers," the first guard grunted, not even bothering to look up as Kael stepped forward.

Kael reached into his pocket and produced the forged travel token he had lifted from the border checkpoint, sliding it across the rough wooden inspection desk. The guard glanced at the metal tag for half a second, gave a dismissive flick of his wrist, and gestured toward the dark, narrow alleyways yawning just beyond the gate.

"Move along. Stay out of the merchant squares after dark unless you want a whipping," the guard muttered, already turning his attention to the next traveler.

Kael retrieved his token, slipped past the barricade, and stepped straight into the Lower District of Valoria.

The contrast between this sprawling slum and the gilded high spires of the noble estates was absolute. There were no paved cobblestones here, only slick, mud-filled trenches that served as open sewers, carrying away grey waste from the towering tenement houses overhead. Cramped wooden shacks leaned against one another for support, their rotting roofs patched with mismatched slate and canvas rags. The air was thick and heavy, saturated with the biting smell of burning coal, cheap stew, cheap ale, and the underlying damp rot of poverty.

Everywhere Kael looked, people were struggling just to survive. Children in thin, threadbare coats huddled near sputtering street lamps, while exhausted dockworkers dragged heavy crates through the mire under the watchful eyes of armed guild enforcers.

The guild enforcers wore black-and-silver tabards, patrolling the muddy alleys in groups of three. They weren't royal soldiers; they were private thugs hired by the Merchants' Guild to collect heavy protection taxes from every tavern, stall, and tenement block in the sector. Anyone who couldn't pay was dragged out into the rain, their meager belongings smashed into the dirt.

Kael walked through the crowded market square, his eyes scanning the chaotic scene with cold detachment. He wasn't here to play savior to the slums. He knew better than anyone that in a world ruled by the powerful, pity was a luxury for the dead. The commoners here accepted their misery because they had no strength to fight back, beaten down day after day by a system designed to keep them on their knees.

*Just like my old unit,* Kael thought, his hand brushing lightly against the hidden hilt of his short sword beneath his cloak.

He slipped into a narrower, quieter lane away from the noisy market stalls, navigating the maze of dark tenements. According to the mental map he had gathered from his interrogation of the border patrol, this was the territory of the Iron Coin Syndicate—a local street gang that operated as the front-line collection arm for the high-tier guilds in the capital.

Suddenly, the muffled sound of a scuffle echoed from a dark dead-end alley a few yards ahead.

"I told you, old man, the weekly tribute doubled today!" a harsh, raspy voice shouted, followed by the dull thud of a fist hitting flesh and the sound of shattering ceramic.

"Please! My wife is sick, I don't have anything left to give!" a frail, elderly voice begged, weeping in the dirt.

Kael stopped walking in the shadows of an overhanging wooden balcony. He didn't blink or hesitate. He turned his gaze toward the alleyway, watching two thickset thugs in leather jerkins standing over an old shopkeeper who was curled into a ball against a damp brick wall. One of the thugs raised a heavy boot, aiming a vicious kick straight at the old man's ribs.

Kael’s step did not falter as he walked straight into the dim mouth of the alley. The air here smelled of stale urine and rotting refuse, completely hidden from the main street's flickering lanterns.

"Looks like the guild's rat dogs are working late," Kael said, his voice dropping into a cold, metallic hum that cut sharply through the rain.

The two thugs froze, turning around with ugly scowls plastered across their scarred faces. The larger one, a brutish man with a broken nose and a heavy iron cudgel resting on his shoulder, spat a glob of phlegm into the mud.

"What did you say, traveler?" the thug snarled, cracking his knuckles as he stepped forward to block the exit. "You must have a death wish, wandering down the wrong lane on your first night in the city."

Kael didn't answer with words. He pulled his hood back just enough to reveal the pale, razor-sharp edge of his face and the faint, glowing crimson resting deep within his pupils.

The thug stopped dead in his tracks, the confident smirk instantly vanishing from his face as a sudden, primal wave of fear washed over him. But it was already too late to turn back. Kael’s hand shot forward from beneath his cloak, moving with a speed that defied human sight, ready to collect his next set of blood points.

The immediate trouble had passed, but the lingering threat of the local enforcer network hung heavy in the smoke-filled air. If the Syndicate's main branch found out who had dismantled their men in broad daylight, every cutthroat in the lower district would be hunting them by morning."Bravery has nothing to do with it," Kael replied, his voice a low, steady hum that cut straight through the ambient noise of the room. The heavy rain pattered relentlessly against the slick cobblestones of the dead-end alley, washing away the grey grime that caked the damp brick walls. In the dim shadows cast by a broken street lamp, the larger thug lowered his heavy iron cudgel, his initial confidence faltering under the cold, piercing weight of Kael’s gaze."You've got a lot of nerve, playing hero in the Syndicate's back yard," the thug sneered, trying to mask his rising unease behind a tough exterior. He motioned to his companion, a wiry man holding a rusted dagger. "Slice him up, Vane. Teach this wanderer how things work in the lower wards."The wiry thug didn't hesitate. He lunged forward with surprising speed, thrusting the jagged blade straight toward Kael’s chest in a swift, horizontal arc.Kael stood completely still until the steel was inches away.
