Chapter 1

Chapter 1: Day of descent.

All I remember was walking down the street on a peaceful Saturday on my way to the supermarket, and then a flash… I found myself in a large open white space with countless other people who all looked just as confused as I did.

My name is Jerry Vesell, and if I have to sum myself up with one word, average with slightly above intellect. My greatest advantage is that I am able to think things through calmly and logically in all situations. At least that is what I believe.

But back to the weird situation I had found myself in. I took a glance around at the white empty space, there was no discerning features, the floor was white, the ceiling was a white could, and it stretched endlessly. If there weren’t other people around, I would have believed that I had died. Part of me was still contemplating whether I had died. Before my thoughts could digress to paranoid theories, I heard a voice calmly addressing all the people in the area.

“So, all of you are probably wondering what is going on, at the moment I have supressed everyone’s ability to speak so please remain calm while I explain what is going on,” the voice calmly remarked.

The voice had an ethereal quality to it while also sounding like an old man with a quick temper. When he delivered his opening statement, I immediately opened my mouth to say hello, with no sound coming out. It was slightly disconcerting to realise my ability to speak had been taken so easily.

“First of all, introductions, I am the god of Sea World, a world that is predominately dominated by water, and I have selected all of you to descend to assist in the world. One million people will descend into the world at this time,” the voice remarked while adding, “though you will all be sent to a various regions.”

Great so one of the few times I am selected and I am being sent into a brand new world with no knowledge or common sense native to that world.

“You were all selected from between the ages of twenty and twenty-five, you are unattached, with no significant others excluding family,” the voice continued.

So we were selected because disappearing wouldn’t result in significant changes? Nice way to tell me how unimportant I am.

“So how my world works is quite simple, everyone has a system that tracks their level, physical statistics, and skills. No other benefits sorry. The people are also divided into classes upon reaching the age of adulthood. Classes are automatically selected for everyone, including you who will be selected into your classes before you descend. Though I am adding a single unique class to the descenders,” the voice said.

So choosing our own future is out of our hands now, for the free willed people from my world, this may not go through so well.

“The unique class in question is the Captain class, though for the specifics you will have to figure it out yourselves. Though I will mention that Captains are tied to a single ship, your ship grows as you and your crew grow,” he continued.

Sounds like this Captain class is either a serious advantage or a disadvantage, though given that the world is known as Sea World, it should be an advantage.

“The other classes you will all be selected into are as follows, Warrior, Marksman, Scout, Mage, Ship Chef, Ship Engineer, Artificer, Doctor and Seaman. Though I should mention that the Captain class will only account for approximately 5 percent of you while the mage class will be closer to 2 percent,” he added.

What is the selection criteria for classes? Is it based on our personal aptitude? Or our personality? If it goes by personal aptitude then I should get the marksman class, I hope. I have always been a good shot while hunting at least.

“To give all of you a slight advantage and to make up for being pulled from your world and sent to mine, I will allow all of you to select 3 skills. Just for comparison, native’s only get 2 randomly assigned skills when they receive their classes. Furthermore, Captains can select one ship’s talent. There are only approximately 10 unique talents, with the rest being standard percentage talents such as [Combat Personal], which increases a ships crews battle potential by ten percent,” he explained.

Sounds like the Captains may fall into a situation of judging a talent by their name to select quickly instead of getting a good idea of the capabilities of their talents, though with ten unique talents there may be some geniuses in our batch.

“Now I am allowing all of you to speak again before we go to class selection as to answer any questions you might have,” he said casually.

Wait, I can speak again, so many questions, which should I ask, let’s listen first to what everyone else asks.

“If I get a class I do not like is there no option to change the class?” Big, muscled, brown hair. An athlete, I would really enjoy seeing him get a chef or doctor class.

“Classes are set and can’t be changed, but people aren’t as restricted by classes as you think, you can learn skills for other classes, it just requires more effort as it doesn’t fit well with your natural aptitude,” the Sea God answered.

Oh, the Sea God actually gave a proper answer, so classes aren’t as restrictive as I imagined. Though there would still be perks to following your natural aptitude

“You mentioned that we are descending to assist in the world. With what do you want us to assist with exactly?” A brunette woman asked. Clearly smart as she picked up on a key point that the Sea God had mentioned.

“Good question young miss. The situation in the world is as follows, my chosen races are slowly becoming extinct. My world is one hundred times larger than your world, yet my chosen races only occupy about seven percent of the world. A hundred years ago they occupied ten percent. They are dying from sea beast attacks and hostile races,” he answered.

Well…... Shit. We are being sent to become exterminators and soldiers for the native races that the Sea God favours to prevent the people from being exterminated. That’s just Great……

“So you are expecting us to become soldiers to fight the sea beasts and hostile races for the natives to prevent their extinction to summarise your statement.” The same woman just got straight to the point. Well said.

“I wouldn’t summarise it exactly like that, it is true that I expect you all will fight sea beasts, but you all also have extra advantages that will make it easier. Your knowledge from this world would be highly beneficial in acquiring skills and improving technology,” he refuted.

Acquiring skills will be easier? What does that mean? How does one acquire new skills? What are the requirements? My mind was racing at an extreme speed currently as I got ready for my question only to be stopped by the sea god himself.

“All right, that is enough questions,” he said suddenly. Enough questions? There were only two questions. He was clearly not ready for in depth questions and saw how we were all straying to a topic that would discourage us.

“You will all descend into approximately one thousand different regions throughout the world, in surviving areas that are generally considered safe and inhabited by natives. The natives are aware that you are descending as I informed them of your arrival. Now it is time to get to skill selection for all of you,” he said.

So the natives are aware of us. That is good. Saves coming up with excuses for who we are and our knowledge. At least we know it is a sword and magic world based on the classes. So magic is a factor in the world, I guess we will only have to work on learning their common sense first before we make any big moves. I just wish this damn Sea God went into more detail, so we had a better understanding of what to expect. We barely received any information.
