The damp stone walls of the abandoned watchtower trapped the freezing mountain chill, turning Kael’s slow breathing into faint wisps of white mist. Outside, the jagged silhouette of the capital’s outer wall cut sharply against the stormy night sky.

Kael sat cross-legged on a dusty wooden crate, his mind turning inward to evaluate his progress. He didn't need a barrage of floating text to tell him what his body already knew. The deep, heavy ache in his bones from the mass grave had vanished completely, replaced by a dense, coiled reserve of supernatural strength. Every drop of blood he had harvested from the patrol guards wasn't just temporary fuel; it was a permanent rewiring of his physical foundation.

He opened his eyes, and a single, compact status window flickered quietly at the edge of his vision, remaining entirely unobtrusive.

[Vampire Sovereign Level 5]

[HP: 210/210]

[Blood Points (BP): 15]

[Strength: 6]

[Vitality: 6]

[Agility: 10]

[Intelligence: 8]

Kael studied the numbers with cold, analytical focus. Ordinary humans spent decades training in the imperial legions to achieve a fraction of these parameters, yet he had climbed this high in less than a day simply by refusing to stay dead. The true scaling potential of the Sovereign bloodline was terrifying. Unlike standard martial paths that hit hard physical walls, his bloodline absorbed, refined, and exponentially multiplied the life force of everything he conquered.

A faint blue text prompt drifted upward from the bottom of his view, reminding him of his unspent growth points.

[Unallocated Stat Points: 5]

Without hesitation, Kael mentally allocated three points into Agility, pushing his movement speed to a terrifying threshold where human eyes would fail to track him in a close-quarters brawl. The remaining two points went directly into Strength, hardening his muscle density to ensure his strikes could easily shatter steel breastplates and bone alike.

A deep, warm thrum pulsed through his limbs as the system integrated the new stats. His veins carried a phantom heat, burning away any lingering fatigue from his long march through the freezing wastelands.

He closed his eyes, letting the deep crimson glow settle back into a quiet, natural hue that blended easily with the shadows.

Beyond the small window of the watchtower, heavy footsteps crunched against the muddy perimeter road. A squad of imperial guards carrying iron lanterns marched past, their metal armor clanking rhythmically in the cold air. Their bored chatter drifted up through the wooden cracks, complaining about the upcoming tax collections in the lower districts and how the guild overseers were squeezing merchants dry to fund lavish banquets for the high nobility.

Kael listened without a flicker of emotion on his face. The systemic corruption of Valoria wasn't an accident; it was engineered from the top down. The nobles and the guilds fed on the blood and sweat of the common people, treating everyone outside their bloodlines as disposable livestock. It was the exact same mindset that had led Lord Julian to order Kael's execution without a second thought.

"Enjoy your banquets while you can," Kael whispered softly to the empty room.

He stood up from the wooden crate, his joints moving with absolute, fluid silence. He reached into his personal storage space and pulled out the durable leather trousers and heavy wool travel cloak he had taken from the supply warehouse. Stripping off his tattered, blood-caked military uniform, he dressed himself in the clean civilian garments. The heavy wool instantly trapped his body heat, shielding him against the biting winter wind.

Next, he strapped the stolen short sword securely inside his cloak, where it remained hidden from sight yet ready to be drawn in a fraction of a second.

He walked over to the watchtower's heavy oak door and cracked it open an inch. The damp night air rushed in, carrying the distant, smoky scent of coal fires, roasting meat, and crowded humanity rising from the sprawling slums of the lower capital. The checkpoints were just fifty yards ahead, manned by sleepy guards who cared more about staying warm than checking travel papers thoroughly.

Kael stepped out of the watchtower, letting the door click softly shut behind him. He pulled his hood down low over his forehead, casting his face into deep shadow.

The first phase of his survival was complete. He had crawled out of the mass grave, secured his basic gear, and stabilized his sovereign bloodline past its initial threshold. Now, he was stepping directly into the belly of the beast. The lower districts were packed with informants, guild enforcers, and corrupt officials who thought the world belonged to them.

Kael took a steady, deliberate step forward down the dark muddy path, blending seamlessly into the rainy night. The predators inside the capital had no idea that a much deadlier hunter had just entered their territory.

The two massive private enforcers didn't hesitate; they drew their heavy iron-reinforced clubs and lunged forward with murderous intent, eager to please their master and terrify the gathering crowd of onlookers.Immediate trouble crashed down like a falling boulder. The first enforcer swung his club in a vicious, bone-crushing arc aimed straight at Kael's head. The crowd gasped collectively, many commoners turning their heads away to avoid watching the brutal impact.Kael didn't flinch, nor did he blink. With razor-sharp reflexes fueled by his upgraded agility parameter, he stepped smoothly inside the swing, letting the heavy weapon pass harmlessly by his shoulder. Before the enforcer could pull his weapon back, Kael channeled a fraction of his raw physical strength and delivered a lightning-fast palm strike directly i

He didn't flinch, nor did he turn around in a panic. He simply let the hostile words hang in the air, recognizing the arrogant, shrill tone immediately. Standing just a few paces away near the grand stone steps of the central exchange bureau was High Clerk Valen, a heavily pampered official draped in rich velvet robes embroidered with thick, glittering silver coin threads. Valen was flanked by two massive private guild enforcers, pointing a trembling, accusatory finger straight at Kael with a look of absolute, smug disgust.Word of the previous night's vault raid beh

"If those magitech runes trip, we'll have half the guild's elite strike team on our necks before we can even blink."Vesperia Vance's warning hissed through the damp midnight air as she pressed her back hard against the rotting timber siding of the east bazaar warehouse. Cold rain slicked the cobblestones, turning the narrow alleys into dark, reflective trenches.Kael crouched beside her, his fingers resting steady and cold against the reinforced iron-and-oak frame of the minor merchant store's back door. He didn't answer her nervous whisper with words; his mind was entirely locked onto the pulsing, invisible hum of arcane energy vibrating through the wood. The immediate trouble was right here—a high-tier security lock designed by guild artificers to vaporize unauthorized intruders.According to the plan they mapped out after leaving the Blue Lantern tavern, this black-market drop point held the illegal financial ledgers, rare catalyst stones, and high-value blood vials managed by the

"You're either the bravest fool in Valoria or the most dangerous man I've ever met."Vesperia Vance’s voice snapped through the tense quiet of the Blue Lantern tavern as she sat back down on the wooden bench, her gray eyes narrowing as she watched two unconscious Syndicate thugs being dragged away into the shadows by trembling patrons.Kael slipped into the seat opposite her without making a sound, pulling his hood down further to keep his face half-hidden. The immediate trouble had passed, but the lingering threat of the local enforcer network hung heavy in the smoke-filled air. If the Syndicate's main branch found out who had dismantled their men in broad daylight, every cutthroat in the lower district would be hunting them by morning."Bravery has nothing to do with it," Kael replied, his voice a low, steady hum that cut straight through the ambient noise of the room. She stood abruptly in her dim corner booth, her hand resting heavily on the table while two bulky Syndicate thugs blocked her path with menacing grins.Kael, standing just a few yards away near the scarred wooden bar, didn't flinch. He had tracked the enforcers' movements straight from the alley information he gathered, slipping into the tavern mere moments ago. Hearing Vesperia's voice—and more importantly, her surname—sent a cold spark of recognition through his chest. Vance. • Chapter 7: The Alleyway Ambush

The heavy rain pattered relentlessly against the slick cobblestones of the dead-end alley, washing away the grey grime that caked the damp brick walls. In the dim shadows cast by a broken street lamp, the larger thug lowered his heavy iron cudgel, his initial confidence faltering under the cold, piercing weight of Kael’s gaze."You've got a lot of nerve, playing hero in the Syndicate's back yard," the thug sneered, trying to mask his rising unease behind a tough exterior. He motioned to his companion, a wiry man holding a rusted dagger. "Slice him up, Vane. Teach this wanderer how things work in the lower wards."The wiry thug didn't hesitate. He lunged forward with surprising speed, thrusting the jagged blade straight toward Kael’s chest in a swift, horizontal arc.Kael stood completely still until the steel was inches away. To his enhanced perception, the knife moved like a slow-motion pendulum through the damp air. With a subtle twist of his torso, Kael leaned just an inch to the s
