Dante had just closed his eyes when the world exploded.
The blast threw him from the couch. Glass shattered everywhere. The walls buckled. Naomi's scream cut through the chaos.
He scrambled to his feet, ears ringing. The safehouse was gone. Walls collapsed. Fires spreading. Bodies in the rubble.
Viktor was on the ground, blood pouring from his shoulder. Lara was pinned under a beam.
Dante moved on instinct. He pulled Lara free. Dragged her to cover.
Naomi was crouched behind an overturned table. "They found us. They knew exactly where we were."
Of course they did. The council had resources Dante couldn't imagine. Surveillance. Informants. Eyes everywhere.
Dante grabbed his weapon. "We need to move. Now."
They fought through the chaos. Dante fired blindly into the smoke. The attackers were everywhere. Black-clad figures moving through the flames.
He dropped two of them. Then a third.
Viktor was slowing. His wound was bad. He'd lost a lot of blood.
"Leave me," Viktor said. "Get the others out."
Dante didn't listen. He pulled Viktor's arm over his shoulder. "You're not dying today."
They reached the back exit. Burst through.
The night was chaos. Sirens in the distance. More attackers emerging from the shadows.
Dante fired again. Dropped another man.
They ran. Through alleys. Across streets. The city was a maze.
Finally, they ducked into an abandoned building. Dante collapsed against the wall. Breathing hard.
Naomi checked Viktor's wound. "He needs a doctor. This is bad."
Lara was shaking. "They killed everyone. Everyone we had."
Dante pulled out his phone. No signal. The council had jammed communications.
"We need to move again," he said. "They'll track us here."
They moved.
---
The rest of the night was a blur. Dante led them through the underground. Tunnels. Sewers. Abandoned train stations.
By dawn, they'd found a place to hide. An old storage unit in the industrial district. Cramped. Dark. Safe.
Viktor was pale. Delirious. Naomi did what she could for his wound, but he needed surgery.
Dante sat against the wall, staring at nothing. The weight of the last few hours pressed down on him.
Lara approached. "I need to tell you something."
Dante looked up. "What?"
"My father had a backup. A safehouse that no one knows about. It's in the mountains. Remote. Heavily fortified."
Dante's eyes narrowed. "Why didn't you tell me before?"
"Because I was afraid." Her voice cracked. "I was afraid of what I might find there. Of what he left behind."
Dante stood. "Show me."
---
The drive took three hours. Dante drove through the winding mountain roads. The sky was grey. The air was cold.
The safehouse appeared through the trees. A small cabin surrounded by forest. Remote. Hidden.
Dante approached cautiously. The place was dark. Silent.
He entered. The interior was dusty, but intact. Supplies. Weapons. A communications system.
Dante powered up the system. He was about to try contacting Viktor's contacts when the screen flickered.
A message. From Evelyn.
"Your resistance is admirable, Mr. Cross. But futile. You can't hide from us. We will find you. We will eliminate everyone you love. Starting with your weak point."
Dante's blood went cold.
Naomi was with Lara. Viktor was unconscious.
He typed a reply. "What do you want?"
The reply came fast. "Your cooperation. Or her life."
Dante looked at Naomi. She was talking to Lara, her face pale but determined.
His hand tightened on the keyboard.
"What are you talking about?"
The message that came next made his world tilt.
"I have Naomi. She's been in my custody since dawn. The woman you've been protecting is a decoy. A plant. We've been watching her for months. We knew she'd lead you here."
Dante's heart stopped.
He turned. Looked at the woman he'd been driving with. The woman who'd been Lara.
No. Not Lara.
Naomi.
Naomi looked at him. Her expression shifted. From confusion to fear to something darker.
"I know what you're thinking," she said. "But I can explain. They forced me. They had my family."
Dante's hand moved to his weapon.
"You've been playing me all along."
"I was trying to protect you." Her voice cracked. "They said they'd kill you if I didn't cooperate. I had no choice."
Dante's finger tightened on the trigger.
He could kill her. End it. Walk away.
But the love was still there. The hope was still there.
"You're lying," he said. "You're not Naomi. You're not Lara."
Naomi's eyes widened. "What are you talking about?"
Dante pulled out his phone. Showed her the message.
"I just got this. From Evelyn. She says she has Naomi. She says the woman I've been protecting is a decoy."
Naomi's face went pale. "That's not true. It's a lie. She's trying to trick you."
Dante's mind raced. Evelyn's message. Naomi's denial. The weeks of trust. The years of betrayal.
He didn't know who to believe. What to trust.
"Prove it," he said. "Prove you're real."
Naomi's eyes filled with tears. "How can I prove it? You know everything about me. You've seen my scars. You've held me in your arms. You've looked into my eyes."
Dante stared at her. The fear in her eyes was real. The love was real.
But so was the message.
"I need to think," he said. "I need to find out the truth."
He walked to the door.
"Dante, wait." Naomi grabbed his arm. "Please. I'm not lying. I've never lied about my feelings for you. Please."
Dante pulled free. He walked out of the cabin.
The night was cold. The stars were bright. He stood in the forest, staring at nothing.
Evelyn's message. Naomi's denial. The love he felt. The trust he'd given.
He pulled out his phone. Typed a reply to Evelyn.
"I'll meet you. Where?"
The reply came fast. "The old courthouse. Midnight. Come alone. Or she dies."
Dante pocketed the phone.
He walked back to the cabin.
Naomi was waiting. Her face was pale. Her eyes were red.
"I need you to stay here," Dante said. "I'm going to meet Evelyn."
"I'm coming with you."
"No." His voice was firm. "You're staying here. If something goes wrong, get Viktor and Lara out. Find a new safehouse. Survive."
"Dante—"
"That's an order."
He walked out of the cabin.
---
The old courthouse was dark. Silent.
Dante entered through the same broken window. The same light burned in the center.
Evelyn was there. Naomi was tied to a chair beside her.
The real Naomi. Her face was bruised. Her eyes were hollow.
"You came," Evelyn said. "I knew you would."
Dante raised his weapon. "Let her go."
"Not until you agree to cooperate."
"I won't cooperate."
Evelyn smiled. "Then she dies."
She pressed a gun to Naomi's head.
Dante's finger tightened on the trigger. He could shoot. Take the chance.
But Evelyn was fast. Too fast.
He lowered his weapon.
"I'll cooperate."
Evelyn smiled. "I thought you'd see reason."
She released Naomi.
Naomi scrambled to her feet. Ran to Dante.
Dante pulled her close. Held her tight.
Evelyn watched them. "We'll be in touch, Mr. Cross. Don't disappoint me."
She walked out of the courthouse.
Dante stood in the silence. Naomi was trembling in his arms.
"It's okay," he said. "It's okay."
Naomi looked up at him. "You came for me."
"I'll always come for you."
---
They walked out of the courthouse. The night was cold. The stars were bright.
Dante looked at Naomi. "You're not the decoy. You're real. You're her."
Naomi nodded. "I'm real. I've always been real."
Dante held her close.
The war continued.
But for now, they had each other.

I tried to make things right."Naomi approached. She knelt beside him. "They would be proud of you."Dante looked at her. "You think so?""I know

The Shadow Council
The message appeared on Dante's phone at 3:17 AM."Your war is a distraction. The real enemy has always been above you. Meet us at the old courthouse. Come alone. We'll show you the truth."Dante stared at the screen. His hand moved to his weapon out of instinct. He'd been sleeping, but the adrenaline hit him like a shot of cold water.Naomi stirred beside him. "What's wrong?""Someone wants to meet.""Who?""I don't know." He swung his legs off the bed. "But they know where we are. They knew how to reach me."Naomi sat up. Her eyes were sharp, fully awake. "That's not good.""No. It's not."He dressed quickly. Checked his weapons. Naomi grabbed his arm. "Don't go alone.""I have to. They said come alone.""Since when do you follow orders from strangers?"Dante looked at her. The fear in her eyes was real. The love was real. But he needed answers."I'll be careful," he said. The Reckoning
The safehouse fell silent.Dante's hand rested on his weapon. His eyes were locked on Naomi's face. She was pale. Trembling. But she didn't look away."Three years ago," she began, "I was recruited by the network. Not by choice. They had my family. They threatened to kill them if I didn't cooperate. I was young. Scared. I did what they asked."Dante's jaw tightened. "That's the same story you told me before.""Because it's true. But there's more." She took a shaky breath. "After my family died, I had nothing. No reason to keep working for the network. But I was already in too deep. I knew too much. They would have killed me if I tried to leave.""So you stayed.""I stayed. And I did terrible things. Things I'm not proud of." Her voice cracked. "Then I met you. And I started to see a way out. A way to fight back. To make things right."Dante's hand moved away from his weapon. "Why didn't you tell me this before?""Because I was ashamed. Because I was afraid you'd hate me. Because I was
