Dante sat in the mountain cabin, staring at the wall. Naomi was asleep in the next room. Viktor was recovering from his wounds. Lara was outside, keeping watch.

The weight of the past twenty-four hours pressed down on him. The attack on the safehouse. The decoy. The meeting with Evelyn. The realization that the shadow council was everywhere.

He pulled out his phone. No messages. No threats. Nothing.

The silence was worse than the violence.

Naomi appeared in the doorway. "You haven't slept."

"I can't sleep. Every time I close my eyes, I see them coming."

"Then we fight." She sat beside him. "We've done it before. We'll do it again."

Dante looked at her. The woman who'd betrayed him. The woman who'd come back. The woman who'd risked everything to save him.

"I don't know if I can do this anymore," he said. "I don't know if I have anything left."

Naomi took his hand. "You have me. You have Viktor. You have Lara. You have a reason to fight."

Dante squeezed her hand. "I know. That's what scares me."

---

The next morning, a message arrived.

Not from Evelyn. From someone else. Someone who claimed to be part of the shadow council.

"Mr. Cross. I represent a faction within the council that is unhappy with Evelyn's leadership. We believe she's gone too far. We want to help you stop her."

Dante read the message twice. His hand moved to his weapon.

Naomi looked over his shoulder. "Could it be a trap?"

"Probably." He typed a reply. "Who are you?"

The reply came fast. "My name is Harrison. I'm the leader of the reformist faction. We've been working against Evelyn for months. We know where she is. We know how to stop her."

Dante was silent for a moment. Then he typed. "Prove it."

A file arrived. Documents. Photographs. Evidence of the council's internal divisions. Proof that Harrison was telling the truth.

Dante studied the file. The evidence was compelling. Detailed. Real.

He looked at Naomi. "We need to meet him."

---

The meeting was set for that night. A warehouse on the east side. Neutral ground.

Dante arrived early. Viktor was with him, his arm still in a sling. Naomi and Lara covered the exits.

Harrison arrived at midnight. He was older than Dante expected. Gray hair. Steady hands. Eyes that had seen too much.

"Mr. Cross. Thank you for coming."

Dante kept his hand on his weapon. "You said you could help me stop Evelyn."

"I can. I have information about her movements, her security, her weaknesses." Harrison pulled out a folder. "She's planning a final operation. A strike against the government. She's going to decapitate the leadership and install her own people."

Dante took the folder. Opened it. The information was detailed. Precise. Terrifying.

"When?"

"Three days. She's been preparing for weeks. She has assets in place. People in key positions."

Dante studied the documents. "Why are you helping me?"

"Because Evelyn is a monster. She's taken the council in a direction I never intended. She's killed innocent people. She's destroyed lives." Harrison's voice cracked. "I helped build this organization. I thought I was creating something good. Something that would protect the world. Instead, I created a nightmare."

Dante stared at him. The regret was real. The pain was real.

"You helped kill my parents," Dante said.

Harrison nodded. "I was part of the decision. I thought they were threats. I was wrong." He met Dante's eyes. "I can't bring them back. But I can help you stop Evelyn. I can help you destroy what she's built."

Dante was silent for a long moment. The anger was still there. The grief was still there.

But the need to stop Evelyn was stronger.

"Tell me everything," Dante said.

---

The next few days were a blur of planning. Harrison provided intelligence on the council's leadership, their security arrangements, their weaknesses.

Dante studied the documents. The council's headquarters was a fortified compound in the mountains. Heavily guarded. Well-defended.

But Harrison knew a way in. A service entrance that was rarely monitored. A blind spot in their security.

"We'll need a team," Harrison said. "Small. Coordinated. Quiet."

Dante nodded. "I'll lead it. Viktor and Naomi will back me up. Lara will provide intel."

Harrison nodded. "I'll arrange transport. Weapons. Supplies."

Dante reached out his hand. "Thank you."

Harrison shook it. "We'll end this."

---

The night before the assault, Dante sat alone on the roof of the cabin.

Naomi joined him. "You're thinking about tomorrow."

"I'm thinking about what comes after." He looked at her. "If we survive this, what do we do next?"

Naomi sat beside him. "We live. We find peace. We build something new."

Dante nodded slowly. "I've been fighting for so long, I don't know how to stop."

"Then we learn together." She took his hand. "One day at a time."

Dante looked at the stars. The night was clear. The sky was beautiful.

"I love you," he said. "I've never said it enough. I love you."

Naomi's eyes filled with tears. "I love you too. I always have."

They sat in silence. The weight of the past pressing down on them.

Tomorrow, they would fight.

Tonight, they would hold each other.

---

The assault was set for midnight.

Dante approached the compound with his team. Viktor was on his left. Naomi on his right. Lara was in the command center, feeding them intel.

They moved through the shadows. The service entrance was ahead.

Viktor disabled the lock. They slipped inside.

The compound was a maze of corridors. Dante moved through them, his weapon ready.

The council's leadership was gathered in a conference room. Harrison had provided the location.

Dante reached the door. Peered inside.

Evelyn was at the head of the table. Her lieutenants surrounded her. They were planning the final operation.

Dante kicked the door open.

"The meeting is over."

The room erupted. Men scrambling for weapons. Evelyn retreating toward the back.

Dante fired. Dropped two men. Then a third.

Naomi flanked him. Viktor covered the exits.

The firefight was brief. Brutal. When it was over, the room was silent.

Evelyn was cornered. Her weapon was empty. Her face was pale.

"You think killing me will end this?" she asked. "There will always be someone else. Someone to take my place."

"Then I'll kill them too." Dante stepped closer. "You killed my parents. You destroyed my life. And now I'm going to end you."

Evelyn smiled. "Then do it."

Dante raised his weapon. His finger moved to the trigger.

Naomi grabbed his arm. "Wait. She's trying to provoke you. She wants you to become like her."

Dante stared at Evelyn. The woman who'd destroyed his life. The woman who was offering him the chance to become a monster.

He lowered his weapon.

"I'm not like you," he said. "I never was."

He knocked Evelyn unconscious.

The room was silent.

Dante stood in the chaos. Breathing hard.

Harrison appeared in the doorway. "It's done. The council is dissolved. Evelyn will face justice."

Dante nodded. He walked toward the exit.

Naomi fell into step beside him. "What now?"

Dante looked at the sky. The stars were bright. The night was clear.

"Now we go home."

But she didn't look away."Three years ago," she began, "I was recruited by the network. Not by choice. They had my family. They threatened to kill them if I didn't cooperate. I was young. Scared. I did what they asked."Dante's jaw tightened. "That's the same story you told me before.""Because it's true. But there's more." She took a shaky breath. "After my family died, I had nothing. No reason to keep working for the network. But I was already in too deep. I knew too much. They would have killed me if I tried to leave.""So you stayed.""I stayed. And I did terrible things.
