“Leon Vergas, You’re under arrest for the possible murder of Rey Pembroke.

You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be provided for you. Do you understand these rights as they have been read to you?"Ethan read,as one of the officers cuffs Leon.

Leon’s brain blanked for half a second.

“Wait, what?” “Okay, okay, listen,this has gotta be some kind of mistake.”

Ethan just stared at him. As he is been led out of the house.

The room was tense,a single metal table, two chairs, one light above.

Leon sat back, arms crossed, tapping his foot against the floor. Across from him were Detective Ethan Black and Officer Hughes, both with the same tired “let’s get this over with” look.

Leon sighed. “Okay, wait,let me get this straight. I was suspected and arrested because I was one of Rey Pembroke’s enemies?”

Officer Hughes flipped a page in his notepad. “Well, you did barge into the station demanding to know why he was released. Next thing you know, he’s dead. So, yeah… you’re one of the suspects.”

Leon blinked slowly. “Wow. Great detective work. Really connecting those dots.”

Ethan leaned forward, elbows on the table. “Do you care to explain why you have a ridiculous number of monitors in your penthouse?”

Leon’s head shot up. “Wait,you guys searched my house?”

“Answer the question,” Ethan said calmly.

“Fine,” Leon muttered. “I’m into crypto. That’s right. Cryptocurrency. I monitor the markets, the trends… the memes. You know, normal stuff.”

Officer Hughes squinted. “Crypto?”

Leon smiled faintly. “Yeah. Ever heard of Dogecoin? That little guy changed my life.”

Ethan wasn’t smiling. “Leon, this isn’t a joke.”

Leon leaned forward now.“Come on, Detective. Don’t act all tough with me. You know I’m a good guy. You’ve seen me around, you know I’m not some masked psycho going around stabbing billionaires.”

“Then why were you so angry about Rey Pembroke being released?” Hughes asked.

“Because he was dumping poison into the city’s water supply,” Leon shot back. “Killing kids. And you guys just… let him walk. Of course I was angry. A lot of people were.”

That got them both quiet for a second.

Hughes finally turned to Ethan. “He’s right, though. The guy had plenty of enemies.”

Ethan exhaled slowly, rubbing the back of his neck. “Yeah… I know.” He stood, signaling to the officer outside. “Release him.”

Leon blinked. “Wait, really? That easy? You’re not even gonna waterboard me first?”

Ethan ignored the jab.

“You can go, Leon. But stay in town.”Ethan said.

Leon stood, stretching his arms with a grin. “Wouldn’t dream of leaving".

As the door closed, Hughes turned to Ethan. “You think he’s clean?”

“No one goes from being a broke programmer to owning a penthouse overnight.”

Ethan straightened his jacket. “Keep an eye on him, Hughes”.

It started drizzling as Leon walked out the glass doors.

“That was close,” he said quietly. “Good thing I cleared every trace. Still… this Ethan guy,he’s gonna be a pain in the neck.”

He adjusted his hoodie and stepped toward the road.

Leon raised a hand, flagging down a taxi but someone else had already done the same.

He turned, a little annoyed… and then froze. It was Gwen.

Her hair was pulled back, looking pretty. Even in the dim light, she looked like she’d just stepped off a TV broadcast, poised, calm, and too good for Gotham’s mess.

“Hey,” Leon said, trying to act casual. “How have you been?”

She didn’t even glance at him.

“Ooo wow,” he muttered, half-grinning. “silent treatment. Got it.”

The taxi rolled up beside them,Gwen opened the door and slid in. The downpour suddenly thickened, soaking Leon in seconds.

She sighed, leaning forward to the driver. “He’s coming too. Just drive.”

Leon blinked. “Wait,what?”

“Get in before you drown,” she said flatly.

He climbed in beside her, dripping water onto the seat. For a moment, there was just silence, the sound of rain hammering in the windows.

Then Gwen finally spoke, her tone sharp and precise. “What kind of person disappears without a word, Leon?”

He glanced at her. “About that… I’m sorry. Something urgent came up. I had to go.”

She turned to him. “You could’ve at least told me you were leaving.”

Leon rubbed the back of his neck. “Yeah… you’re right. I should’ve.”

“Listen,” he said quietly. “I’m sorry, okay? Please accept my apology.”

Gwen’s smiled.

“Apology accepted. she said softly.

Leon smiled back, relieved. “Thanks. So…” he tilted his head toward her, “you care to explain why you were at the police station?”

She raised an eyebrow. “Funny, I was just about to ask you the same thing.”

He chuckled. “You first.”

“I went to get more tea on the Rey Pembroke case,” she said, glancing out the rain-blurred window. “Needed it for the press. Not that I really care, though” she gave a small shrug, “that idiot got what he deserved.”

Leon turned, surprised. “Wow. That’s kinda harsh.”

She smiled faintly. “Maybe. But men like him ruin lives and get away with it every day. Gotham finally bit back.”

Leon tried to laugh it off, but something twisted in his chest. “Yeah… guess you’re right.”

Her eyes flicked to him. “You haven’t answered my question though. What were you doing in the station?”

He blinked, caught off guard. “Oh,uh, about that…” He scratched the back of his neck. “I went to report my missing dog.”

Her brow lifted. “You don’t look like someone who owns a dog.”

“Well, I do,” he said, forcing a grin. “And it’s missing.”

Gwen gave him a suspicious look but didn’t press further.

Then,just as he was about to say another word.

BEEP.

The blue screen appeared before his eyes, hovering faintly in front of him.
