Allen stood at the bus stop, among the pool of bodies, observing the busy road before him while biting his lips lightly.

He noticed some bystanders were secretly stealing glances at him, probably due to his obvious uneasiness.

He wished he could explain what troubled his mind but he was sure they would just laugh at him.

It was night time and he had to get home on time to prepare dinner for his wife.

He checked his wristwatch and stamped his feet in anger after realizing how fast time has gone.

His boss, Mr Geraldine had intentionally delayed him without reason, giving him extra work while he exempted his colleagues.

He remembered how his colleagues sneered at him when this happened.

He tried to protest, saying he had urgent things to do but it all fell on deaf ears.

It left him no choice but to do it and it had cost him an extra thirty minutes aside his working hours, hence the reason why he's minutes behind the time he's meant to be at home.

He could still recall his boss's words.

" Do you think I pay you to do nothing! If you are really that uncomfortable with the job, why don't you just quit since you chose to be useless anyways," Mr Geraldine had said and barged off instantly.

He wasn't surprised.

His boss had hated him from day one and constantly made sure he did the hardest work.

The man even made it clear he is exempted from receiving overtime pay.

But that wasn't what bothered him now, other than the fact that he's going home to meet trouble.

He sighed gently, hoping a bus would come soon.

He just hoped Ella won't get angry and would be so considerate to him tonight.

Another car zoomed past, splashing water puddles at Allen and other bystanders, making him step backwards a little.

The dirty water stained his light blue trousers but the car didn't even stop for a second to take a look, instead it sped off.

While others complained and grumbled, Allen only dusted it off with his napkin and continued waiting for the bus.

A few people came to join him, waiting for a bus.

Some of them d and greeted him and he could have sworn he had seen one of them somewhere but he had no time for that now.

While waiting, he brought out his phone and dialed Ella's number.

He waited as the call connected.

He had been trying to reach her lines but she kept ignoring his calls.

He hoped as he placed the phone to his ear

The call rang for several seconds before getting disconnected abruptly.

He knew what that meant.

She was clearly angry at him.

Luckily for him,a bus arrived at that moment and he rushed in.

All through the drive home, he kept thinking of how best to explain the situation to Ella.

Soon enough, the bus stopped in front of a junction.

He got down and while hurriedly, finding his way home.

The apartment complex was on sight from here, making him increase his steps.

Before he got home, he branched into a nearby store and brought a glazed doughnut.

He would give her that as an appetizer before going to prepare the main dish.

He also brought extra for his mother in law, who came to spend a few days with her daughter.

He smiled to himself widely as he finally got to the building.

" Babe, I'm home! " He called out just as he entered the living room.

But the living room was unusually quiet.

He gently closed the door and looked around.

Is she playing with him?

" Stop, Ella. You know I hate surprises. " He laughed, dropping the packaged doughnuts on the center table. " Okay, fine. I'm sorry for coming late. I'll be on my way to prepare dinner now."

But there was no response.

Maybe she's asleep in her room.

Just as he thought of taking the stairs that led to the other rooms to find her, He was met with the sight of her walking down the stairs, giggling.

She was dressed in a very beautiful gown that was adorned with tiny diamonds.

The diamonds sparkled at her every movement.

It was as if he fell in love again with her at that very moment.

" Ella! " Allen smiled and crossed the room to meet her, only to see another man walking down beside her.

His smile turned into a frown.

Mrs Flora, his mother in law also came shortly after.

Ella's smiling demeanor changed instantly when she saw him.

They all got down and stood before him.

The man behind was also wearing a confused look.

From his expensive dressing, Allen could tell he was no ordinary man.

Allen decided to let go of his worries and speak first.

" See, Ella. I'm sorry I came late. My Boss delayed me today. I'll go over to prepare dinner now." He rushed.

He grabbed the packaged doughnuts and stretched it to her" Look, I got you this, i know how much you like them. Eat this while i prepare dinner real quick, okay." he smiled genuinely.

" I also got you one as well, Mother-in-law" his smile grew wider as he examined their facial expressions.

Neither of them was smiling.

Allen knew that look.

They were clearly angry at him.

Allen's heart thumped and he tried to explain.

" I swear. I didn't mean to come late. It was work! Please, believe me Ella. You know I would never lie to—"

" Enough!" Ella shouted, hitting the packaged doughnuts away from his outstretched hands in a swift.

The contents rolled all over the floor.

" Do you consider me to be this cheap?! " She stared at him deadly.

Allen looked at her in surprise.

What does she mean?!

" So you think I'll be swayed easily by just two pairs of doughnuts?! Is that what you think I'm worth?! This is so ridiculous! " She gasped.

He had not even talked when his mother in law chirped in.

" I wonder what lies in that empty skull of yours, Allen. Why are you so daft and stupid! I'm sure you intentionally planned to starve us tonight! " Mrs Flora added, fueling her anger.

Allen's mouth dropped open.

No!

It wasn't like that.

Mrs Flora turned to her daughter, anger shone in her eyes

"It's all your fault! " She barked at Ella.

"Yes, and I will keep saying it over and over again. I wonder why you accepted him as your husband in the first place! Even if your late father had insisted you marry a nobody like him. You had the right to disagree and I warned you fervently but stupid you chose to be a fool like him. Are you now seeing what this had cost you now?! Huh?! " She shouted.

Ella fumed, her eyes tearing up due to anger.

" I only wanted to respect daddy's wish but I regretted that decision to this very day." she bit her teeth and turned to Allen.

" Sorry," the expensive man behind, finally spoke. " Please, who is this? "He asked, confused.

" It's the useless husband I was telling you about! A total good for nothing! " Mrs Flora answered almost immediately.

" Oh, I see," the man said and smirked.

Allen was speechless.

Is this some joke?

Ella shot a death stare at Allen, tears clouding her sight.

" I hate you! You keep embarrassing me everywhere with your poverty-stricken status. You're so useless and shameless! I had only encountered hardships ever since we married. Aside from cooking and doing house chores and alongside your poverty, what impact have you made in my life! Tell me! " She wiped her eyes, then turned to face her mom.

" I'm sorry, I should have listened to you, mom" she said, regret written all over her face.

" You better do!" Mrs Flora said, with her hand resting defiantly on her waist.

" If not for Sir Rodney here who agreed to take us out tonight on a dinner date, that's how we would have starved to death. You should start thanking Sir Rodney instead."

Why did it take so long? ” Sir Edward’s eyes grew distant, sad like someone who carried guilt for years. “Nineteen years ago, on a summer evening, your father took the whole family, your mother, your brothers, and you—out for a treat.” “Then the car… the accident happened. It was brutal. When we got to the scene, we only found the charred remains of your mother, and the bodies of your two brothers. Your father’s body too… but your body wasn't there.” " You were inside too, Allen... but somehow, you miraculously survived.” Allen’s heart raced. Maybe this was the reason he never remembered anything from his childhood. " We thought maybe… just maybe, you survived. But no one could trace where you went " “We searched everywhere. All we found was a torn piece of your father’s coat, stained with blood. Blood that traced back to Fredrick but the devil denied everything. He manipula
