Lucien Legion did not look away from her question, even though every instinct in him wanted to soften it, wanted to find some gentler shape to put around an answer this important.
"Yes." He said it plainly, without hesitation, watching her face for the moment it would land. "If the test comes back and says no, I would still call you my daughter. I'd call you that for the rest of my life." Chloe's breath caught, something between a sob and disbelief. "You mean that? You're not just saying it because I'm upset?" "I mean it." He reached out slowly, giving her every chance to pull away if she needed to, and rested a hand gently on her shoulder when she didn't. "Blood is one way people end up in a family. It's not the only way. It was never the only way, not for us. I was in that delivery room the night you were born. I was the first person to hold you. I've spent sixteen years being your father in every way that matters, and a lab report doesn't get to erase that just because it's printed on official letterhead." "But it changes something." Her voice wavered, fighting to hold onto the fear even as his words worked against it. "If it's true, if you're not... then who is? Doesn't that mean somebody out there is my real dad, and I don't even know him?" "Biology is a fact." Lucien Legion chose his words with care, unwilling to lie to her but equally unwilling to let the fear win the whole conversation. "Fatherhood is a choice. Whoever contributed biology, if that turns out to be a real question, that's a fact about where half your genes came from. It has nothing to do with who raised you, who loves you, who's going to keep showing up every single day whether the paperwork says he's supposed to or not." Something in her seemed to give way at that, the tension holding her upright finally breaking, and she stepped into him and cried the way she hadn't let herself cry since she was small enough to be picked up and carried to bed. Lucien Legion wrapped his arms around her and held on, saying nothing else for a long while, letting her get it out. "I don't want another dad." Her voice came out muffled against his shirt, thick with tears. "I don't want to find out I have some other family somewhere. I just want things to go back to how they were." "I know." He rested his chin lightly on the top of her head, the way he used to when she was young enough to fall asleep standing up against him after a long day. "I want that too. I can't promise you the divorce goes away, or that any of this gets easy. But I can promise you this part. You and me. That doesn't change." She nodded against him, her breathing slowly evening out, the worst of the storm passing even if the fear underneath it hadn't fully gone anywhere. After a while she pulled back, wiping her face with both hands, some of her usual composure returning even with her eyes still red and swollen. "Can I ask you something else?" "Anything." "Does Mom know you're doing the test?" She studied him carefully. "Like, does she know why?" "She knows." Lucien Legion kept his voice even, unwilling to drag her further into the ugliness between him and Stacy than she already had been dragged tonight. "It's part of the divorce. That's all you need to carry right now." Chloe nodded slowly, though something had shifted behind her eyes, a memory surfacing that she hadn't thought about in longer than she could say. "A few months ago." She said it slowly, like she was working it out even as the words came. "Before any of this divorce stuff started, I heard Mom on the phone with someone. She didn't know I was near the door. She said something about protecting the family name. About making sure nothing from before ever got out. I didn't think anything of it at the time. It just sounded like normal celebrity stuff, you know, image management." Lucien Legion went very still, his pulse ticking up despite his best effort to keep his face calm for her sake. "Before what, exactly? Did she say?" "No." Chloe shook her head slowly. "She hung up pretty fast after that. I never asked her about it. I didn't think it mattered." "It might not." Lucien Legion kept his voice gentle, though his mind was already turning the phrase over, protecting the family name, before any of this ever got out, fitting it against everything else that had happened over the last few weeks. "You did the right thing telling me." "I'm not telling you to get her in trouble." Chloe's voice sharpened slightly, protective in the instinctive way children were protective of their mothers even when everything else about their world was falling apart. "I just... I don't know. It felt important, hearing you say blood doesn't decide who's family. Because if that's true, then whatever Mom meant by that, it shouldn't matter either. Right?" "Right." He said it softly, though something cold had settled low in his chest that he didn't let show on his face. Chloe hugged him once more, briefer this time, some of the earlier devastation folding itself back down into the ordinary shape of a sixteen year old saying goodnight, and disappeared down the hallway toward her room, leaving Lucien Legion alone at the kitchen table with her books still scattered on the floor where she'd dropped them. He didn't pick them up right away. He sat there instead, turning her words over and over, protecting the family name, before any of this ever got out, and felt the shape of something much larger than a custody dispute pressing in against the edges of what he thought he understood. Upstairs, behind her closed bedroom door, Chloe sat on the edge of her bed with her phone in her lap, her father's voice from downstairs still echoing in her chest, blood doesn't decide who's family. She believed him. She wanted to believe him completely. But the memory of her mother's voice on that phone call kept surfacing anyway, sharp and unwelcome, and underneath the fear and the exhaustion of the night, a small, quiet decision began to take shape in her mind. She was going to ask her mother what happened before she was born. Whatever it took, whatever her mother said to try to talk her out of it, she needed to hear the answer for herself.Latest Chapter
18: Edwin Lincoln
Chloe showed up at Lucien Legion's apartment two nights later, unannounced, her eyes swollen from crying the whole drive over. He took one look at her face and pulled her inside without a single question, sitting her down at the kitchen table before he asked anything at all."What happened?" He crouched in front of her chair, scanning her face, her arms, checking for anything visible the way sixteen years of parenting had trained him to check first and ask questions second."Mom slapped me." She said it flatly, like saying it fast might make it hurt less. "I asked her if there was another man. If that's why she was scared of your test."Lucien Legion went very still, his jaw tightening. "She hit you?""It doesn't matter right now." Chloe pulled her phone out of her pocket, her hands shaking slightly as she opened the photo she'd taken of the screen before Stacy walked back in. "This matters more."She turned the phone toward him. Lucien Legion took it carefully, reading the screen twi
17: Name On The Phone
Stacy fled the study a few minutes after the slap, muttering something about getting Chloe ice for her cheek, her hands still trembling as she disappeared down the hallway toward the kitchen. Chloe stood alone by the desk, her face still stinging, staring at the spot where her mother had been standing.Stacy's phone sat on the desk beside the abandoned contracts, screen lit up from a notification, still unlocked from whatever she'd been doing before Chloe walked in.Chloe knew she shouldn't touch it. She knew it the same way she knew she shouldn't have asked the question that got her slapped in the first place, and she picked it up anyway, her heart hammering, some reckless, hurt part of her past caring what she was supposed to do anymore. She opened the messages first, scrolling fast before her nerve failed her. Most of it was ordinary, publicists, stylists, a group chat with two other actresses planning a charity gala. Then she saw it, a name near the top of the recent conversations
16: The Hidden Conversation
Chloe waited three days before she found the right moment, a quiet Saturday afternoon when the penthouse was empty except for her and Stacy, no assistants hovering, no phone calls scheduled. She found her mother in the study going through a stack of contracts, reading glasses pushed up into her hair, a cup of coffee gone cold beside her."Mom." Chloe stood in the doorway, her arms crossed tight over her chest, working up the nerve she'd been building for days. "Can I ask you something?""Of course, sweetheart." Stacy didn't look up right away, still scanning a page. "What is it?""What happened before I was born?" Chloe watched her mother's pen stop moving mid signature. "I heard you on the phone once, a while back. You said something about protecting the family name. About making sure nothing from before ever got out. What did you mean?"Stacy set the pen down slowly and finally looked up, her face carefully arranged into something warm and puzzled, though her eyes had gone sharp und

14: Painful Decisions
Lucien Legion ended the call with Donald Mccallister and set his phone down on the kitchen table, his jaw still tight from the last exchange. He didn't hear the front door until it was already closing, and by the time he turned around, Chloe was standing in the hallway with her backpack half slipped off one shoulder, school books still in her arms. She wasn't moving. Her face had gone pale and still in a way that made his stomach drop before either of them said a word."Chloe." He stood up too fast, the chair scraping against the floor. "How long were you standing there?""Long enough." Her voice came out small, nothing like her usual easy chatter. "I heard you talking about a blood test. About numbers not matching. About whether you're my..." She stopped, unable to finish the sentence, her books sliding out of her arms and landing on the floor with a soft thud neither of them moved to pick up.Lucien Legion crossed the room slowly, the way he'd approach a frightened patient, hands lo
13: Unverified Truth
Lucien Legion called Donald Mccallister's office the next morning and told the assistant it was urgent, personal, and that he'd wait as long as he had to for a callback. The callback came within the hour, Donald Mccallister's voice carrying the same smooth caution it always did, though something underneath it sounded thinner than usual."Mr. Legion. I trust you received the results.""I did." Lucien Legion sat at his kitchen table, the photograph from the anonymous sender pulled up on his laptop screen, sitting beside the scanned copy of his official paperwork. "I also received something else. A photograph of the original sample label."Silence on the line, brief but unmistakable."I don't follow." Donald Mccallister recovered quickly, but not quickly enough."The intake number on that label doesn't match the number on the report your lab sent me." Lucien Legion kept his voice level, the same controlled tone he used delivering hard news to families in a hospital hallway. "It also does
