Lucien Legion stayed exactly where he was.
"I'm not apologizing." His voice was quiet but there was no give in it at all. "And I'm not going home with you." Stacy's smile thinned out until it barely existed. "Excuse me?" "Three labs, Stacy." He kept his eyes on her, refusing to look away first. "Three separate tests, three separate results. That's not a coincidence and it's not a mistake. If Chloe isn't mine, then you cheated on me, and I don't see a single reason for this marriage to keep going." For a moment something flickered behind her eyes, gone before he could name it. Then her face hardened into something sharp and accusing. "You went and did this behind my back." She leaned forward, her voice climbing. "You had no right to run tests on my daughter without telling me. Who gave you permission to do that?" Lucien Legion almost laughed at how fast she'd flipped it around. "I needed permission to find out whether my own daughter is actually my daughter?" "That's not the point." Stacy's hand came down flat on the table again, rattling the silverware. "The point is you went sneaking around like I'm some criminal you needed to catch. Do you know how insulting that is?" "Insulting." Lucien Legion repeated the word slowly, like it tasted bad in his mouth. "You want to talk about insulting." Her jaw tightened, eyes narrowing into something cold and warning. Around them the restaurant noise hadn't stopped, and a couple at a nearby table had already glanced their way once. Stacy noticed it too, and her expression shifted fast, smoothing over into something more controlled, though the tension never left her shoulders. "Keep your voice down." She hissed it under her breath, glancing toward the door. "Do you want the whole city reading about this tomorrow? Think about what a scandal like this would do, to both of us." "To both of us." Lucien Legion's mouth twisted. "You mean to you." "Enough." Her voice dropped low and urgent. "We are not doing this here. Get up. Come home with me and we'll sort this out where nobody's listening." "No." The single word landed heavy between them. Stacy stared at him like he'd grown a second head. "No?" "That house isn't mine." Lucien Legion said it plainly, without any anger left in his tone, just tired fact. "It's yours. Your name's on the deed, your money built it, your face is on the walls in every magazine cover you framed. I've just been living there. It stopped feeling like home the second I read that report." Her face went white, then red, color rising fast up her neck. "You ungrateful son of a—" She caught herself, breathing hard through her nose, and when she spoke again her voice had turned to ice. "Fine. If you don't want to come home, then don't. Don't ever come back, Lucien Legion. I mean it." She stood so fast her chair nearly tipped, grabbed her bag, and walked out without looking back this time. Lucien Legion sat alone in the private room a long while, staring at nothing. Eventually he checked into a hotel two blocks from the restaurant, dropped onto the bed still in his clothes, and slept straight through until evening swallowed the windows whole. When he woke, his head felt clearer, though his chest still ached in that same dull way. He splashed water on his face, grabbed his jacket, and headed out with one thing on his mind. The bar from last night. He needed to pay back whoever had covered his hotel bill. Whoever it was, they hadn't needed to, and Lucien Legion didn't like owing anybody anything, especially not right now. He crossed the street toward the entrance just as a couple stepped out from the side alley near the door. Lucien Legion stopped cold. It was Marcus Webb. His colleague from the hospital, a guy he'd known since med school, currently married with two kids at home. A young woman was wrapped around his arm, laughing at something, her hand sliding up his chest like she owned him. Marcus's eyes swept right past Lucien Legion without a flicker of recognition, though there was no way he hadn't seen him standing there under the streetlight. Lucien Legion almost laughed out loud. Must be nice, being that shameless in public. He didn't call out. He didn't have the energy to deal with anyone else's mess tonight, and honestly, it wasn't his business what kind of animal Marcus wanted to be behind his wife's back. Still, standing there watching Marcus disappear around the corner with the woman clinging to him, something cold settled into Lucien Legion's gut. He thought back to the night before. Waking up naked. The message he never remembered sending. The blond hair the front desk clerk mentioned, nothing like Stacy's. If that woman had wanted to hurt him, really hurt him, she could have taken photos. She could have sold the story to any tabloid in the city and destroyed his name overnight, ruined his job, ruined everything, and he wouldn't have remembered a single second of it to defend himself. His stomach turned cold at how easily that could have happened. And the more he thought it over, the more sure he became of one simple fact. That woman was not Stacy. He didn't know who she was. He didn't know why she'd taken him, why she'd paid for the room, why she'd let him believe whatever he wanted to believe. But it hadn't been his wife driving that car, holding him up on that sidewalk, dragging him through that parking garage. Lucien Legion pushed the bar door open, the noise and light spilling out into the street, and stepped inside without noticing the woman standing quietly across the road. Short blond hair. A faint smile on her lips as she watched him disappear through the door.Latest Chapter
18: Edwin Lincoln
Chloe showed up at Lucien Legion's apartment two nights later, unannounced, her eyes swollen from crying the whole drive over. He took one look at her face and pulled her inside without a single question, sitting her down at the kitchen table before he asked anything at all."What happened?" He crouched in front of her chair, scanning her face, her arms, checking for anything visible the way sixteen years of parenting had trained him to check first and ask questions second."Mom slapped me." She said it flatly, like saying it fast might make it hurt less. "I asked her if there was another man. If that's why she was scared of your test."Lucien Legion went very still, his jaw tightening. "She hit you?""It doesn't matter right now." Chloe pulled her phone out of her pocket, her hands shaking slightly as she opened the photo she'd taken of the screen before Stacy walked back in. "This matters more."She turned the phone toward him. Lucien Legion took it carefully, reading the screen twi
17: Name On The Phone
Stacy fled the study a few minutes after the slap, muttering something about getting Chloe ice for her cheek, her hands still trembling as she disappeared down the hallway toward the kitchen. Chloe stood alone by the desk, her face still stinging, staring at the spot where her mother had been standing.Stacy's phone sat on the desk beside the abandoned contracts, screen lit up from a notification, still unlocked from whatever she'd been doing before Chloe walked in.Chloe knew she shouldn't touch it. She knew it the same way she knew she shouldn't have asked the question that got her slapped in the first place, and she picked it up anyway, her heart hammering, some reckless, hurt part of her past caring what she was supposed to do anymore. She opened the messages first, scrolling fast before her nerve failed her. Most of it was ordinary, publicists, stylists, a group chat with two other actresses planning a charity gala. Then she saw it, a name near the top of the recent conversations
16: The Hidden Conversation
Chloe waited three days before she found the right moment, a quiet Saturday afternoon when the penthouse was empty except for her and Stacy, no assistants hovering, no phone calls scheduled. She found her mother in the study going through a stack of contracts, reading glasses pushed up into her hair, a cup of coffee gone cold beside her."Mom." Chloe stood in the doorway, her arms crossed tight over her chest, working up the nerve she'd been building for days. "Can I ask you something?""Of course, sweetheart." Stacy didn't look up right away, still scanning a page. "What is it?""What happened before I was born?" Chloe watched her mother's pen stop moving mid signature. "I heard you on the phone once, a while back. You said something about protecting the family name. About making sure nothing from before ever got out. What did you mean?"Stacy set the pen down slowly and finally looked up, her face carefully arranged into something warm and puzzled, though her eyes had gone sharp und
15: A Father Without Blood
Lucien Legion did not look away from her question, even though every instinct in him wanted to soften it, wanted to find some gentler shape to put around an answer this important."Yes." He said it plainly, without hesitation, watching her face for the moment it would land. "If the test comes back and says no, I would still call you my daughter. I'd call you that for the rest of my life."Chloe's breath caught, something between a sob and disbelief. "You mean that? You're not just saying it because I'm upset?""I mean it." He reached out slowly, giving her every chance to pull away if she needed to, and rested a hand gently on her shoulder when she didn't. "Blood is one way people end up in a family. It's not the only way. It was never the only way, not for us. I was in that delivery room the night you were born. I was the first person to hold you. I've spent sixteen years being your father in every way that matters, and a lab report doesn't get to erase that just because it's printed
14: Painful Decisions
Lucien Legion ended the call with Donald Mccallister and set his phone down on the kitchen table, his jaw still tight from the last exchange. He didn't hear the front door until it was already closing, and by the time he turned around, Chloe was standing in the hallway with her backpack half slipped off one shoulder, school books still in her arms. She wasn't moving. Her face had gone pale and still in a way that made his stomach drop before either of them said a word."Chloe." He stood up too fast, the chair scraping against the floor. "How long were you standing there?""Long enough." Her voice came out small, nothing like her usual easy chatter. "I heard you talking about a blood test. About numbers not matching. About whether you're my..." She stopped, unable to finish the sentence, her books sliding out of her arms and landing on the floor with a soft thud neither of them moved to pick up.Lucien Legion crossed the room slowly, the way he'd approach a frightened patient, hands lo
13: Unverified Truth
Lucien Legion called Donald Mccallister's office the next morning and told the assistant it was urgent, personal, and that he'd wait as long as he had to for a callback. The callback came within the hour, Donald Mccallister's voice carrying the same smooth caution it always did, though something underneath it sounded thinner than usual."Mr. Legion. I trust you received the results.""I did." Lucien Legion sat at his kitchen table, the photograph from the anonymous sender pulled up on his laptop screen, sitting beside the scanned copy of his official paperwork. "I also received something else. A photograph of the original sample label."Silence on the line, brief but unmistakable."I don't follow." Donald Mccallister recovered quickly, but not quickly enough."The intake number on that label doesn't match the number on the report your lab sent me." Lucien Legion kept his voice level, the same controlled tone he used delivering hard news to families in a hospital hallway. "It also does
