Chapter 1 – The Price of the Throne

Blood covered the ground. Smoke rose from the burning tents. Kael Draven stood in the middle of the mess, sword still dripping red. The last enemy soldiers knelt in front of him, begging for their lives.

He did not care.

“Throw their heads with the rest,” he ordered. His voice was cold and steady. “Valoria does not keep cowards.”

His men cheered. They had won again. Another kingdom crushed. Another victory for the young prince who never lost.

Kael wiped his blade on a dead man’s cloak. He felt the same fire in his chest that always came after a fight. Power. Control. Nothing could touch him.

Then a horse galloped through the smoke.

Torin, his personal guard, jumped down fast. His face was pale.

“Your Highness… the letter. From the palace.”

Kael took it. Read it once. Then again.

King Theron was dying.

The fire in his chest turned to ice.

He did not speak. He just turned and started walking. “We leave now. Anyone who slows me down stays behind.”

Three days of hard riding later, Kael stormed into the royal chambers. The smell of medicine hung heavy in the air. His grandfather lay on the big bed, thinner than Kael had ever seen him. The strong king who once made whole armies shake now looked small.

“Kael…” the old man whispered. A weak smile crossed his face.

Kael dropped to one knee. For the first time in years, the arrogant prince felt something crack inside him.

“I’m here, Grandfather.”

King Theron lifted a shaking hand. “Come closer, boy.”

Kael sat on the edge of the bed. He hated how fragile the old man felt.

The royal doctor stood nearby, head down. “There is nothing more I can do, Your Majesty.”

Kael’s temper snapped. He grabbed the doctor by the collar. “Try harder!”

“Enough,” King Theron said, voice still sharp enough to cut. “Killing him changes nothing.”

Cassian, Kael’s father, stepped forward with two officials carrying papers.

“The will must be read now,” one of them said.

Kael stood tall. He already knew what it would say. He was the only real heir. The strongest. The one who had never lost a battle. The throne was his.

The official cleared his throat.

“I, King Theron Draven of Valoria, name my grandson Kael Draven as the next king… if and only if he follows these conditions.”

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

“He must leave the palace for five full years.

He must hide his true name and blood.

He may live as a commoner or even a slave, but he must never reveal who he is.

He must not start fights.

He must endure whatever comes, no matter how hard.

Only when the five years end may he return and claim the throne.”

Silence filled the room.

Kael laughed once, sharp and angry. “This is a joke.”

“It is the king’s will,” his father said quietly.

Kael turned on the old man. “You want me to crawl like a dog? After everything I did for this empire?”

King Theron looked at him with tired eyes. “I did the same when I was your age. The same rules. The same five years. That is how I learned what a real king needs.”

Kael’s hands curled into fists. “I am already strong enough.”

“You are strong with a sword,” the old king said. “But you have never been powerless. You have never begged. You have never felt true hunger. A king who has never tasted dirt will one day lose everything.”

Kael wanted to shout. He wanted to smash the walls. But the look in his grandfather’s eyes stopped him.

This was not punishment. It was the last lesson the old man could give.

Outside the door, Prince Vesper—Kael’s smiling cousin—listened with interest. He had waited years for a chance like this.

Kael closed his eyes. The fire in his chest burned differently now. Not for blood. For something harder.

He opened them again.

“I accept.”

King Theron let out a long breath. Something like pride mixed with sadness.

“Leave before sunrise,” the old king whispered. “Take nothing that marks you as a prince. And Kael… come back alive.”

Kael nodded once. He did not trust his voice.

That night he changed into plain clothes. No armor. No crest. Just a rough shirt, worn boots, and a thin cloak. He left his sword behind. The rules forbade fighting, and he would follow them—for now.

At the palace gates he stopped and looked back one last time at the high towers of Valoria.

Five years.

He would endure. He would grow. And when he returned, no one would ever call him soft again.

As he stepped into the dark road, a strange warmth stirred deep in his blood—something old and quiet that had never woken before. It felt like a locked door starting to crack open.

Behind him, in the shadows of the palace wall, Prince Vesper watched the figure disappear into the night. A cold smile spread across his face.

“Five years,” he whispered to himself. “More than enough time to take everything.”

Kael walked on, unaware of the eyes on his back… and of the storm already gathering around the throne he had just left behind.
