The black blade cut through the air so fast it made a sharp whistling sound.
I twisted my body to the side, throwing all my weight downward. The dark metal passed just inches from my face, the cold wind of it scraping against my cheek. I did not stop moving. I drove my right fist straight forward, aiming for Tari's chest with all the anger I had bottled up inside me for years.
My fist hit his black jacket with a heavy thud.
Tari did not fly backward like a normal person would. Instead, a ring of pale light flashed around his waist, absorbing the impact. He slid back two feet across the concrete floor, his boots screeching, but he kept his balance. He looked down at his chest, then back up at me, his eyes narrowing.
So the vessel is active, Tari said, a dark edge to his voice. Good. Breaking you will actually be a challenge.
Before I could charge at him again, a bright blue flash lit up the room.
Amina stepped directly between us, her glowing spear held horizontally. The shaft of the weapon blocked Tari's path, forcing him to halt. She did not look at him; her eyes stayed fixed on me, cold and calculating.
Stop, Tari, Amina said, her voice cutting through the air like a knife. "We are not here to kill him today. If he dies before the extraction point is secured, the whole network falls apart.
Tari lowered his black blade slightly, his face twisting into a bitter scowl. He just tried to break my ribs. You saw him.
"I saw that he is reacting to the activation, Amina replied, her tone flat and steady. She turned her gaze back to me, studying the dark blood still leaking down my arm. Look at him, Tari. He does not even know how to control the ink. He is raw. He is a tool that has not been sharpened yet.
I stood my ground, breathing hard, my chest rising and falling. The pain in my palm was completely gone now, replaced by a strange, heavy warmth that spread from my shoulder all the way down to my fingertips. The black blood on my skin pulsed slower, glowing with a steady, eerie light.
I am not your tool, I said, my voice shaking with rage. And I am not going anywhere with you. You broke into my home, and you hurt my friend.
Amina let out a short, cold laugh. Your friend? You mean the hacker sitting three streets away who thinks she can outsmart the High Council's tracking firewalls? Let me tell you something about Yetunde, Kelechi. She is not some random girl you met on the street. She was placed in your life ten years ago to monitor your growth.
My breath caught. "You are lying.
Am I? Amina tilted her head, her face showing no pity at all. How do you think she managed to crack local databases and find secret national security files so easily? Do you really believe a regular girl in Lagos just happens to stumble upon top-secret containment records? She was your watcher. And now that you have triggered the alarm, her handlers have already cut her loose.
The words hit me harder than any punch could have. Yetunde. The girl who shared fried plantains with me after long shifts. The girl who laughed at my jokes and helped me pay rent when the club owners shorted my wages. A watcher? A guard hiding behind glowing glasses?
No, I whispered, shaking my head. She is my friend.
In our world, there are no friends, Tari said, stepping up beside Amina. He spun his black blade in a smooth circle before resting it casually on his shoulder. There are only players and pieces. And right now, you are the most valuable piece on the board. Everyone wants you. The Council wants to lock you back in the vault. The rebel factions want to bleed you dry to fuel their weapons.
And what do you want?" I demanded, clenching my fists.
Amina stepped closer, lowering the tip of her glowing spear. The blue light reflected in her eyes, making them look like cold fire.
We want the truth, Amina said softly. The people who locked you away in this basement are the same people who destroyed our family fifteen years ago. They think you are just a vessel, Kelechi. They think you are an object with a heartbeat.
She paused, her jaw tightening.
I am going to prove them wrong. But to do that, you have to come with us right now.
I looked at the hole in the ceiling where grey smoke from the street above was starting to drift down. I thought about Yetunde's phone going dead with that sharp, mechanical click. I thought about the empty life I had been living, cleaning up messes in the dark while a whole world of magic and lies operated right above my head.
And if I say no? I asked.
Tari grinned, his dark eyes flashing with amusement. "Then my sister puts that glowing spear through your shoulder, and we carry your unconscious body out through the sewers. Either way, you are leaving this club.
Silence filled the basement, heavy and suffocating. I looked down at my hands, watching the dark ink pulse under my skin. I did not trust them. I did not know if a single word Amina said was true. But staying here meant waiting for whoever hurt Yetunde to come back and finish the job.
I raised my head and looked straight into Amina's cold eyes.
If I go with you, I said slowly, "the first person we find is whoever touched Yetunde. And when we find them, I get to break their teeth.
Amina stared at me for a long moment, then gave a sharp, single nod. Deal.
She turned around, motioning for Tari to follow, and walked toward the broken steel vault door. Tari gave me a mocking salute with his black blade and stepped into the shadows behind her.
I took one last look around the ruined basement, the overturned tables, the shattered glass, and the dark stains I would never have to clean up again and stepped forward to follow them.
We climbed through the broken vault door, leaving the secret room behind and entering a narrow, damp tunnel carved deep into the earth beneath the Lagos lagoon. The air smelled of wet stone and old iron. We walked in silence for several minutes, the only light coming from Amina's glowing spear cutting through the thick darkness ahead.
My mind raced. If Yetunde was a watcher, who else had been lying to me? How much of my life was real?
Suddenly, Amina stopped dead in her tracks, raising a hand to signal us to halt.
The tunnel ahead split into three different paths. But it was not the paths that made my stomach drop. Nailed to the damp brick wall at the center of the junction was a standard-issue security badge covered in fresh, dark blood.
Yetunde's badge.
And right beside it, painted on the wall in thick, dripping black ink that looked exactly like the blood pulsing in my own veins, was a single word: WELCOME.
Before any of us could take a breath, the floor beneath our feet dropped away with a deafening roar.

The Hidden Cell
The train stopped so fast that I slammed my shoulder hard against the metal wall of the car.Sparks flew from the automated brakes, filling the dark tunnel with a sharp burning smell. The lights inside the transport flickered twice and died, leaving us in total darkness except for the dim glow of Yetunde's tablet screen."What happened?" Tari asked, drawing his black blade as he stepped into the center aisle."The manual override was triggered from outside," Yetunde said, her fingers moving fast across her glowing screen. "Someone cut the power lines to this entire sector. We are trapped."Zara did not wait for her to finish. She pushed past the front seats, grabbed the emergency latch on the heavy sliding door, and pulled with all her weight. The door jerked open with a
The Shattered Crown
Director Vance dropped to his knees before he could pull the trigger, his pistol clattering loudly against the cold marble floor as Amina’s spear swept his legs out from under him.The great hall of the Geneva fortress plunged into complete chaos. Sparks flew from the ruined server towers, and thick black smoke filled the air, cutting off the rows of digital screens that had mocked us just moments before. The global council's iron grip on the world was burning down right in front of our eyes.Zara did not waste a single second celebrating. She stepped past Director Vance, raised her heavy pistol, and pointed it squarely at the silver-haired old man who was desperately trying to crawl toward the emergency exit behind his desk."End of the line," Zara said, her voice hard and cold.
The Final Grid
The blue light from the floor grid locked around our ankles like heavy iron chains, burning hot against my boots and stopping every step I tried to take.Director Vance smiled a wide, cruel smile as he walked down the marble steps from the raised platform, his hands sliding smoothly into his pockets. He looked at us as if we were insects trapped under glass, completely helpless and entirely at his mercy."You really thought you could outsmart the global council, Kelechi?" Director Vance said, stopping just a few feet away from where Zara and I stood. "Your father was a fool who thought he could hide his little experiments in Lagos. But the council sees everything. And now, the vessel is finally where it belongs."Zara pulled against the blue energy field holding her ankles, her face locked in a hard, cold glare. She

The private jet slammed down onto the hidden mountain runway with a violent jolt that threw us hard against the cabin seats.Outside the small windows, blinding white snow swirled in a furious blizzard, hiding the steep cliffs of the Swiss Alps. The engines screamed as the pilot fought to keep the heavy aircraft from skidding off the icy concrete, finally bringing the nose to a grinding halt right in front of a massive steel fortress built directly into the side of the mountain."They hacked our manual controls the second we crossed the border," Yetunde said, her fingers flying across her satellite laptop as she tried to force a reboot. "Our flight system is locked tight. We cannot take back off."Zara did not panic. She stood up smoothly, checked the clip of her heavy pistol with a sharp click, and looked toward th

"The global council does not lose control of its assets. Every safehouse you left behind is currently surrounded. If you turn this jet around and land in Geneva within six hours, your friends live. The Geneva Invitation
The small communicator in Zara's hand felt like a live bomb ticking in the quiet lift. The cold voice had barely finished speaking before the speaker cut off with a sharp static click, leaving us trapped in the smooth, ascending hum of the elevator. My chest tightened. I stared at the metal doors, my fists clenching so hard the dark ink beneath my skin flared up in a bright, warning glow."Geneva," Zara said, her voice cutting through the silence like a knife. She stared down at the small device in her hand as if she wanted to crush it. "They think destroying Sector Nine makes you the new king of the board. They think you will just step right into your father's seat.""I am not going to Geneva," I said, keeping my voice low and steady. "I spent sixteen years cleaning floors for people who thought they could own my l
